3 Quick intro If you are familiar with IIS hosting and you already have an IIS server and a SQL server, you can skip chapters 2 (IIS installation) and 3 (SQL server installation) and read the procedures described in chapter 4 (Application setup). If you start with a new server, this tutorial shows you how to quickly install all components needed to run the application. This tutorial does not include advanced server configuration options (IIS and SQL). For advanced configuration, you need to read Microsoft documentations for each module. 2

4 1 System requirements Windows platform (Windows Server 2008 SP1 or above) with IIS 7.5 or above o Application can be hosted also on Windows7 or above machines but with known limitation about max 10 different network connections..net framework 4.5 or above ( ) Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or above. It can run with express versions but with known express versions limitations. For a compete list of features, read documentations on Microsoft website ( ). Main issue with express versions is database limitation to 10GB, which can be a problem if you store documents into CtxUniverse. server for sending s from application. The local user is required in order to run external Citrix inventory tool and the user must be able to access Citrix License Server (network access). 3

5 2 IIS installation If IIS is already installed, you can skip this step. Go to Server Manager -> Server roles and select Web Server (IIS) After pressing next button, beside default selected services, select also the following role services: ASP.NET Basic authentication Window authentication if server is in a domain and domain authentication is used Dynamic Content Compression IIS6 Management Compatibility optional but recommended 4

7 3 SQL Server installation and setup If you already have an SQL server installed, you may skip this step. Download the installation kit from and run the setup. 3.1 Choose New installation option. 3.2 Keep suggested values during installation process. 6

8 3.3 Database engine configuration Select Mixed mode, then enter a password for sa user. This user has administration rights on SQL server. 7

9 4 Application setup An overview of what must be done: Create a SQL user for the app Create a windows user under his authority the app will run. This user must have access to network resources. Deploy the package Configure IIS 4.1 Configure the SQL server Create a dedicated user for web application with SQL Server authentication. Make sure that password will not expire or needed to be changed at first login. Create a new database and set the owner to be the user that you just created. 8

10 Check if the user has the proper rights on the database. This user must have the rights to create / drop / alter tables and triggers. 9

11 4.2 Deploy web application package Unzip the package to a folder (Ex: C:\www\CtxUniverseWebApp) Decide the authentication method. By default, user authentication is by username and password. If you want to use AD authentication, delete the existing web.config file and rename Web.ad-login.config to Web.config file. Grant access rights for the windows user under the web application identity will run. This user must be created or use an existing one. (Ex: CtxUniverseAppWebUser) o CtxUniverseWebApp folder must be granted to Read & Execute, List folder contents, Read rights o CtxUniverseWebApp/LocalStorage must be granted with full rights. 10

12 4.3 Configure IIS Go to IIS manager and add a new website 1. Go to Sites, right click and select Add website 2. Fill the form and press OK 11

13 Go to Application Pools menu and: o Set the application pool to run in integrated mode and framework 4 or above. o From advanced settings, go to ApplicationPoolIdentity and set it to run under custom account. Enter the user and password for the windows user (Ex: CtxUniverseAppWebUser) 12

14 In IIS section, go to Authentication section: Configure IIS for Forms Authentication Enable Anonymous Authentication and Forms Authentication. The rest of authentication types should be left as Disabled Configure IIS for AD authentication. Make sure that you have deleted the existing web.config file and rename the web.adlogin.config file to web.config. 13

15 Enable Anonymous Authentication and Windows Authentication. The rest of authentication types should be left as Disabled. 4.4 Application first run clean install Open a browser and access the AppSetup. Installation wizard will be launch. Note: If you choose windows authentication config, when you enter in setup mode, you need to authenticate at this step. If you run the setup in Internet Explorer or Chrome you will be automatically authenticated. Step 1: Prerequires Check folder structure and folder access 14

16 Step 2: Database setup initialize database Fill the connection string parameters. Press check button and if some errors are shown, fix the connection string parameters and try again. After successfully Check the connection string parameters, press Init Database button. Step 3: Finalize setup The setup process is done when Finish button is pressed. 15

17 Depending on authentication option during the IIS config step (Windows authentication or login by user and password) you will see: User and password login for standard authentication: Default credentials: Username : admin Password: admin Windows authentication (AD login) In case you are running the app in Internet Explorer or Chrome, you will be automatically authenticated and redirected to home page. In case that automatic authentication fail (you use Firefox or some browser configuration deny auto login), you must provide the full username (with domain name if you are in a domain) and password. First authenticated user has the role of app admin. 4.5 Start using the application After you log in: Go to profile page and update your profile info Go to admin section and configure each module, then add users, assign roles. For a complete description of admin module, read the Admin Guide. 16

18 Note: Only users that are in users list can use the application. 5 Application updates As a general guideline, before any update backup database and existing version of the web application, so in case of update failure you should be able to restore the version within minutes. For database backup, you can use Sql Management Studio (provided by Microsoft for free), and for web backup you can simply create a ZIP archive of the website folder. Any updates will come with specific instructions. The web application info is displayed in the footer on each page. 1. Web version: always PROD for production releases 2. Logged user time zone (current user time zone) 6 Troubleshoot 6.1 Setup init database fail There might be some scenarios related to SQL access rights uncovered by the setup process. In case of some SQL errors appear, the best approach is to fix the reported errors, drop and recreate the database via SQL console or SQL Management Studio, after that re-run the setup process. 6.2 License server fail to retrieve data Check in the admin panel if the module is on and the call parameters are set. If the problem persists, it might be a network related problem or grant access rights, so you need to run manually the external application. Logon on the server where the web application is hosted with same user as the web app identity is set (Ex: CtxUniverseAppWebUser), open command window and run manually the license scanner application: Sample command (example): C:\www\CtxUniverseDev\LocalStorage\ExternalApps\UdaminRemote\UDadminRemote.exe - licenseserver ctxunilabxd.nuage360.local -usage 17

19 Fix the reported problems and try again. If the app successfully run from command prompt, it will run also under web application. 18
