How to use Backup Wolf: Backup Wolf was designed to be intuitively easy to use. When you first launch the program you are presented with four tabbed windows you can select from. Profile Tab -> Where you create, select or delete Backup Profiles. Define Tab -> Where you define each Backup profile you have created or selected. Backup Tab -> Where you actually perform the Backup or analyze a previous backup. Log/Restore Tab -> Where you can view a Backup Log of any Backups you have made and where you can perform a Restore of any Backup profile. The window order is set up to walk you through a typical Backup process as follows: 1) Create or select a Backup profile from the Profile window. Refer to Help topic Profile Window 2) Open the Define window to define the profile selected. Defining a profile simply means selecting what files or folders you want to backup and selecting what destination location you want them saved to and then adding them to a profile and saving any changes made. Refer to Help topic Define window. 3) Open the Backup window to perform the actual backup for the current profile that was selected or created in step #1. You will see a status indicator and progress meter displayed that keeps you informed during the backup process. Refer to Help topic Backup window. 4) Select the Log/Restore window to view a dated log of any backups you have performed. This page also presents you with the option of restoring the profile you selected in step #1, if desired. Restoring means any files or folders saved to the destination locations in a Backup profile are copied and saved back to their original locations. Refer to Help topic Log/Restore window.

Profile window: The Profile window is presented to the user when Backup Wolf first opens. This window is where you will create, delete or select a Backup profile. A Backup profile must be selected before you can define or modify it. Creating a backup profile : To create a new profile: 1) Click once on the New button 2) Enter the name of the Backup profile 3) Click the OK button accept and create an empty profile. 4) You will see the profile name displayed in the Current Backup profiles list. Selecting a Backup Profile : To select a Backup Profile for modification or to perform a backup: 1) Highlight the profile by clicking once on it in the Current Backup Profiles List in the Profile window. The profile will be automatically loaded. NOTE: The "Opened profile" box will display the name of any currently selected profile that's loaded and ready for modification.

Define window : The Define window is where you define the Backup profile. The Profile definition defines precisely what files or folders are copied and saved when the Backup is performed. Files and folders are selected for backup along with a destination location for each, then added to the Backup profile definition. Select a source file/files or folder and then a Destination folder. To add the selections to the Backup profile click on the ADD button The definition added is displayed in the "Backup Profile Definition" box at the bottom of the current window. To continue modifying your Backup profile definition repeat the process discussed above. How to define a Backup Profile : 1) Select or create a backup profile in the Profile window (please refer to the Profile window topic.) 2) Select a source file that you would like to backup by clicking on the Select source file to back up button ( NOTE: To select multiple files hold the CTRL Key while clicking on the file names ) or Select source folder to back up by clicking on the Select source folder to back up button NOTE: To select the Source folder you must DOUBLE CLICK on the folder in the folder selection window that appears. 3) Select a Destination folder by clicking on the Select destination folder button NOTE: To select the Destination folder you must DOUBLE CLICK on the folder in the folder selection window that appears. 5) Click on the Add button to add the file/folder backup paths to the profile definition. 6) Repeat the above process to continue adding and modifying the profile definition. 7 displayed in the "Backup Profile Definition" box 7) When you are finished making additions or modifying the Backup profile click on the Save button to save the changes. To delete an entry from the currently opened Profile definition : 1) Select a backup profile in the Profile window (please refer to the Profile window topic.) 2) Select and highlight the entry by clicking once on it in the "Backup Profile Definition" box 3) Click on the Delete button to delete the entry from the profile definition. NOTE : Right Click on any items in the Backup List to enable/disable individual items in the backup profile.

Backup window : The Backup window is where the actual backup is performed. This window displays the name of the profile currently opened (the name may also be edited in the box where its displayed). Also displayed is the Current Profile Definition list, a status indicator and a Comments box where the user can add explanatory comments for the backup profile. Clicking on the Backup Now! button will backup all the files and folders specified in the Current profile Definition list. The status indicator and progress bar will notify the user when the backup is completed. To perform a backup for the currently opened Backup Profile: 1) Select a backup profile in the Profile window (please refer to the Profile window topic.) 2) Click on the Analyze button to perform an analysis of the backup profile that is currently selected. The results will be displayed and the Backup Type (Full or Incremental) automatically selected based on the analysis performed. To override the Analysis selection you may manually select the type of backup to perform (Full or Incremental) by clicking on the appropriate option. For information on the FULL Backup options (mirror image or update) please refer to the Full Backup Options help topic. Please refer to the Help topic Incremental backup for more information on incremental backups. 3) Click on the Backup Now! button. NOTE: A Backup Profile must be selected before you can make a backup.

For more info on how to select a Backup Profile please refer to the Profile window topic. 4) Results of the Backup will be displayed in a results window that appears. A log entry for the Backup performed will also automatically be added to the Backup Log in the Log/Restore window. NOTE : Right Click on any items in the Backup List to enable/disable individual items in the backup profile.

Log/Restore window : The Log/Restore window allows you to view the Backup/Restore log that records all user backups and restorations performed previously. It also contains the Restore option that restores any files or folders backed-up for the currently opened Backup profile. The Restore button simply reverses the Backup process so a backup must have been made previously for this option to be successful. Selecting the Restore option will copy ALL files and folders from the Destination locations back to the Source locations defined in the Backup profile. The Restore process OVERWRITES any files that currently exist with the same file name in the Source location. To Restore a profile : 1) Select the backup profile to be restored in the Profile window (please refer to the Profile window topic.) 2) Click on the RESTORE button. NOTE: The status indicator and progress bar will indicate if the restore process was successful.

Incremental backup Backup Wolf performs two kinds of back ups. Full backup - (non incremental) All Source files and folders defined in the Backup profile are copied to the Destination folders specified. Any files that exist in the Destination path with the same file names are OVERWRITTEN. If you have previously performed a backup with this option doing it again will Overwrite the same files that already exist in the Destination folder regardless if the files have changed or not. The Full Backup option should be selected to perform this type of backup. NOTE : Two additional backup options are provided for Full Backups that control how any Folders in the backup profile are copied and saved to the backup destination location. For information on the FULL Backup options (mirror image or update) please refer to the Full Backup Options help topic. Incremental backup - All Source files and folders defined in the Backup profile are copied to the Destination folders specified ONLY if the Source files or files contained within the Source folders have changed since the last backup was performed. Basically this option checks the File date of EACH Source file and compares it to the File date of the same file in the Destination folder. ONLY if the file date of the Source file has changed will the file be updated. This option should be selected to maintain your backups for each profile. Only files that have changed since the last backup will be copied and updated. The Incremental option should be ENABLED to select this type of backup.

Full Backup options Backup Wolf offers two options (mirror image and update) for Full Backups. The option you select controls how Backup Wolf treats any folders you have selected in the backup profile. Each option is discussed in detail below with a recommendation at the bottom. Mirror image : This option creates an exact duplicate in the *destination* location of the files and folders in the *source* location. Any pre-existing folders in the *destination* location (only) are first deleted and then recopied from the *source* location. Selecting the mirror image FULL BACKUP option usually is faster since files are not being compared between source and destination. If users are in anyway concerned that folders in the *destination* location may be deleted before recopying, they should select the FULL BACKUP Update option when performing a FULL BACKUP or simply perform an INCREMENTAL BACKUP instead. Update: This option updates all files from the *source* location to the *destination* location. Folders in the *destination* location are not deleted but instead updated by comparing the file date of each file in the *source* location to the file date in the *destination* location and only updating files that have changed. Any new files or sub-folders that exist in the *source* location but not in the *destination* location will also be backed up and updated. Recommendation : Lone Wolf software recommends that users perform a FULL BACKUP (mirror image) on the first backup for any particular backup profile you have created. Then to maintain and update the backup simply select the INCREMENTAL BACKUP option which will always automatically compare each and every file in the *source* location to the copy that currently exists in the *destination* location and ONLY update individual files that have changed since the last backup of the profile. Any new files or sub-folders that exist in the *source* location but not in the *destination* location will also be backed up and updated. Incremental Backup's are usually the fastest and safest option for updating and maintaining backups. Selecting the Full Backup type: Select: Preferences->Full Backup Options -> Mirror image -> Update

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions 1) Where should I backup my files and folders to? You should backup your files/folders to a location other than your C drive in case of a hard drive crash. You can choose any other hard drive or network drive that you have access to, a CD drive, or any other media if available. 2) Can backup Wolf backup to CD's? Yes, but you need to have packet writing direct access software installed to allow Backup Wolf to write directly to your CD drive. An example of direct access software is Roxio's DirectCD. Most CD-RW drives include this software. 3) Can Backup Wolf backup across network drives? Yes, simply select the network drive in Backup Wolf when creating your backup profile. 4) Does backup Wolf compress the backed up files? No, Backup Wolf creates a "mirror image" without any compression algorithms being used. This allows you to easily recover your data manually if necessary from the backup location. Backup Wolf includes a Restore option, but if this for any reason fails you then have the option of manually copying the saved data back to it's original location. 5) How do I get upgrades? Backup Wolf includes an "auto update" menu option that checks for availability of any new versions of the software and automatically downloads the update. 6) Why can't I select the root drive for backups? Backup Wolf was designed as a "surgical backup/recovery" system so you are required to select specific files and folders on each drive. You can optionally select all the files and folders on a drive very easily but 99% of the files on your C drive are Windows files that are easily recovered simply using the Windows installation CDROM. Backup Wolf was created to allow you to target critical files and data on your PC. 7) What happens if I lose my backup profile data files?

This is another advantage of Backup Wolf's mirror image and non compression design which allows you to easily recover your backed up data by simply Copying and Pasting the files and folders back to their original locations from the backup location if necessary. 8) Does an Incremental backup also backup new files in the folder that's selected for a backup? Yes! Backup Wolf's incremental backup option checks each and every file in every folder and sub folder selected in the backup profile that you create, and then compares the file date and file size from the file in the *Source* location to the file in the *Target* location and then only updates each file if it's changed. Backup Wolf also looks for any new files and backs the new files up to the *Target* location. Any sub folders in the folder that you have selected in the backup profile are searched and updated automatically. The incremental option is often stunningly fast for maintaining your backup's since it only copies files that have changed or new files to the *Target* location. 9) What should I do to maintain previous backups? Simply use Backup Wolf's Incremental backup option and you will never have to worry about your data! 10) What if my hard drive crashes? Can I still restore the data from the backup? Yes! You can recover the data using Backup Wolf's Restore option which will copy the data back to it's *Source* (original) location from the *Target* (backup) location that you specified in your backup profile. If all else fails, you can also do it manually by simply copying and pasting the uncompressed backup data back to the *Source* location very easily. 11) Why should I use Backup Wolf? The most important files on your computer are often your document and data files for many of the software programs that you use every day. Backup Wolf allows you to easily target these files and folders and back them up to a safe location so that you can feel secure in the event of problem. Maintaining your backups often only takes seconds using Backup Wolf's Incremental backup option. We at Lone Wolf Software only use Backup Wolf to maintain our critical data and we have never suffered a data loss!
