1 Getting Started Duralink Port Aggregation is a software suite that provides system redundancy and increased bandwidth for Fast Ethernet servers running mission-critical applications. Port Aggregation works through load balancing the throughput over multiple ports. With Adaptec s Duralink Port Aggregation you can group multiple ports into a single virtual port. This grouping distributes the network load by sharing the resources of all ports in a user-defined group. The group itself acts as a single interface allowing the software to efficiently manage the combined resources of the group. In the event of a port failure, the remaining ports carry the load and keep the network running and uninterrupted. Supported Platforms and Adapters Duralink Port Aggregation is available for Windows NT and Novell Netware-based servers. Duralink Port Aggregation is compatible with Adaptec ANA -6911A single port network interface card (NIC), ANA-6922A dual port NIC, and ANA-6944A quad port NIC. 1-1

Duralink Port Aggregation User s Guide Conventions The following typographic conventions are used in this document: Bold Used for keystrokes (press the Enter key) and for options you are directed to select from a menu or list (select Configuration Status from the main menu). Helvetica Used for operator entry that you must type exactly as shown (a:\emdiag) and for messages that appear on the screen (Performing Automatic Media Detection). Helvetica Italics Used as a place holder for text you must determine and type (drive = boot drive letter) and for program and file names that appear in body text (the readme.txt file). 1-2

2 Typical Network Configurations This chapter compares traditional Ethernet configurations to Ethernet servers using Duralink Port Aggregation. These examples show the impact Duralink Port Aggregation has on network performance and hardware investment. 2-1

Duralink Port Aggregation User s Guide Traditional Configurations The following three examples show some typical configuration methods. The illustration below shows a single segment server initialized at 100 Mbps with Full Duplex Ethernet (FDE). In this example, the segmented server is limited to 200 Mbps. In addition, if the connection to the server fails, the network may go down. Clients Central switching area with lines to workgroups Ethernet Switch Server Router Clients Ethernet Switch 2-2

Typical Network Configurations The next traditional method provides network Fault Tolerance through doubling the hardware and addition of a special version of NetWare (SFT3). Data is kept current between servers via a Mirrored Server Link (MSL). In this example, one server is active while the other is ready to take over all duties if the other fails. Clients Primary Server Central switching area with lines to workgroups Ethernet Switch MSL Secondary Server The next example shows a configuration with Windows NT Server (Wolfpack). Clients Primary Server Central switching area with lines to workgroups Ethernet Switch Storage Devices Ethernet Link Secondary Server 2-3

Duralink Port Aggregation User s Guide Servers with Duralink Port Aggregation A server with Duralink Port Aggregation can use up to 12 Adaptec PCI Fast Ethernet ports in one aggregated group (at 1.2Gbps per group). Up to 32 ports can be used per server, achieving 3.2 Gbps throughput. If any of the contributing members of a specific aggregated group should fail, that member is excluded from the group. The remaining ports balance the existing load. Duralink Port Aggregation Example The configuration example below shows a server with 12 ports from three Adaptec ANA-6944A NICs. With this configuration, the server has a cumulative bandwidth of 1.2 Gbps on its single virtual segment (100 Mbps per port). Further, the network segment is fault tolerant, enabling the network to remain alive should any port fail.
