Description: Legend: Content Bolded is Notes to teachers. Introduction to External Media and their importance Let s learn about external media in this lesson and how to use them and the importance of using them. What are External Media? CD s and Pen drives are examples of external Media to store data and programs outside of the computer and Read data and programs from outside the computer. Imagine that you have a beautiful poem in your mind. You really like it and want to read it to everyone. Meanwhile you got busy with your home work and forgot the poem. It will be difficult to recollect that. Right? What if you wrote it in a book neatly and kept it safely? Even if you forget you will still have your book to read it out proudly to everyone! Similarly it is very important, for a computer to have its data and programs saved in an external media, like a pen drive. If something happens to the data on computer and we lose it, we always have the pen drive to get the data from. Also, it is not always possible to remember everything as our memory is limited. Similarly the computer has limited memory. Sometimes it is necessary to read data from external media like a CD. Examples of Data on a CD could be Music, a special program that need not reside on the computer. People all around the world create application and programs. External media is one way the programs can be available to anyone who can have the data or programs. With these external CD s and pen drives, it is very easy to move data from one computer to another and it is also very easy to travel with this data easily from one place to another place. More examples of external Media are Zip drives and Tape drives which we will learn in later classes. Until recently data was stored in floppy drives also. Data was read from floppy drives also. But these are not being used any more. CDs s can store more data than floppies, so floppies have become outdated. We will learn how to write data from the computer onto a Pen drive. And learn how to read from a CD in the next section. Let s know a little more about CD s and Pen Drives. Below is a picture.
CDs use pits (microscopic indentations) and lands (flat surfaces) to store information Inside the CD-Rom is a laser that reflects light off of the surface of the disk to an electric eye. The pattern of reflected light (pit) and no reflected light (land) creates a code that represents data. CDs usually store about 650MB. A Pen Drive is a very light weight storage device that is connected to a USB port of a computer it can store atleast 1GB of data. It is called a pen drive as it looks like a pen. In this section we will learn how to move data from the computer to CD s and pen drive and we will also learn how to read data from CD s and pen drive. After this class you will learn to be doing a very important work to keep the data safe and also be able to read all kinds of data from outside. Read and Write methods. Reading Data from a CD. Reading and writing data is very easy. Let s learn about reading data first from CD s. Firstly, a CD is inserted into a CD drive of a computer. The data content of the CD can be viewed by the computer s file system. In Windows XP the following steps can be used to read data from a CD. When you open windows explorer you see the file system. The computer hard disk is the C:\ drive. When a CD is inserted into the CD drive, the windows file system shows the CD drive as the D:\ drive or the E:\Drive (the teacher should only talk about one CD drive, which ever is appropriate for the system in use) Click on the D: drive using your mouse, the windows explorer will display the data in the D: drive which is the CD. All the files and data will be displayed. Choose the file you want to read move your mouse onto the file and double click on the file using your mouse. The file will open on your computer and you can read. (The teacher must explain that sometimes the programs associated with these files may not be loaded on the computer, so the files may not open.)
You can read data form any kind of CD. That was very easy. Reading Data from a Pen Drive. Now let s learn how to read data from a Pen drive. First, simply insert the pen drive into the computer slot for pen drive. The slot is called a USB port. In windows XP, Now go to windows explorer. You can see an E:\ drive on your windows explorer. (Teachers must be careful in teaching the right drives configured for the system. Otherwise children will get confused at this stage) Simply click on the E:\ drive and read the files by choosing the file you want to read and move your mouse onto the file and double click on the file using your mouse. This was very easy also. Write data into Pen drive. Now let s learn how to write data into a pen drive. It is very easy. Insert your pen drive into the computer slot called the USB port. Use Windows XP, and Open your windows explorer. Click on your C:\ drive and find the file you want to copy and write into the pen drive. Then select the file by clicking in it with your mouse. And then go to the Edit menu on your computer and select copy option. The file will copy for you in a temporary area. Then click on the pen drive which is the E:\ drive and once there go to the file Edit menu and click on the paste option. This will copy the file into the pen drive. That was easy. See pictures below.
(Need to paste copy screen shot here) Pitfalls to watch out for: (Teachers please read below and convey) if a file is being copied to the C:\drive and it already exists in the computer, then we have to make sure we do not overwrite that file. We get a prompt for if from Windows XP, weather to overwrite it or not. Depending on what the user wants it can be overwritten or not. Accidentally, is any file gets deleted, then it can be retrived from the recycle bin. Sometimes there can be more than one version of the same file that are not exactly the same; In such cases, it is best to number the file with version numbers, so the versions will stay intact. When files are being moved from one system to another system, care must be taken so that file being moved does not already exit. (Teaching burn software to a 3 rd grader is not practical as there are so many different kinds of burn software and very confusing for them. However the teacher can briefly explain to any student how asks a question on how to write to a CD) Write Data to a CD. Now let s learn how to write data to CD s. (Not for text, just for teacher) To write data into a CD we need a special CD called a CD Read Write. These CD s are called CDRW. We can write data only into these CD s. (If the teacher feels that his/her class can comprehend this well then he can explain the difference between CDR s and CDRW s) Also we need a special drive to write data into CD s. It is called a CD, read write drive or a CD burner. A Special program on the computer will enable to write data on the CD. It is called the CD burner software. We will learn about using this special program later. However your teacher will show how to use this program and write data on the CD s.
Lesson plan Technical aspect and Importance 1. Explain the importance of storage into external media and the importance of reading data from external media. 3 rd graders should be able to understand the importance of the function. 2. First talk about the importance of external media. Then teach them to use external media to read and write data. At the end of this lesson students should have a sense of responsibility towards data and realize the importance of the read/write tasks that they performed. Planning and Division of Lesson. 3. Spend the first week explaining the importance of external media and towards the end of the session, just demonstrate how to use a CD and a pen drive. 4. Spend second week, demonstrating reading and writing from/into pen drives. 5. Second week and third week, spend significant time with worksheets and exercises and practically porting data. Preparation 5 Make sure the disk drives configured in the system are the disk drives used for teaching. 6 Select some good CD s like a program CD and Music CD. 7 Obtain a pen drive for demonstration. Activities and handling. 6. Demonstrate reading from a CD and write to a pen drive. 7. Demonstrate first and explain importance next or vice versa, which ever your students adapt to better. 8. Follow through the course of worksheets in the next section and make every child follow through. 9. Make every child realize that they have performed a very important function of storing data, moving data and reading data. 10. If available find pictures of external storage media on the internet and print out to show them. 11. Show children how to handle the external media. They need to be handled gently, so no scratches are made etc. 12. CD s must always be stored in their cases or covers. 13. The cap of the pen drive must be inserted after use. Errors 12. Except for errors to happen. 13. Caution overwriting files. 14. Try to make children think on how to correct an error. For example if a file is deleted it can be recovered from the recycle bin
Work Sheets & Exercises. Copy existing file form C:\ Drive and Store in Pen drive E:\ Drive. Open a file in the C:\Drive and use File saves and data file into Pen Drive. Make a new file and save directly into Pen drive Fill in the blanks Insert Music CD into a CD drive and hear to music Insert A CD which has some files already saved and open them. Insert a Program CD into a C:\ Drive and open the application launch or set up program. (Do not show games, only if children take this as lesson, we do not want to teach that reading is all about games) Copy file from Pen Drive to C:\ Drive Copy File form CD drive to C:\Drive Open File in Pen drive and save to C:\ drive Open file in CD drive and Save on C:\ Drive. Move Save, Copy If there are 2 computers in the class room. o Copy file from one computer on Pen Drive, Take it to the second computer and read the file on the second computer. Talk briefly about CD writing and that will be taught in an advanced class. Worksheet Lesson Plan Preparation 1. Make sure the Drives on the system configured correspond to the drives letters you are using to teach. 2. Acquire a Music CD, a Game CD, and application CD such as Microsoft office, to display various kinds of data. 3. Acquire a pen drive that is portable. 4. If possible if there are 2 computers show about porting data from one computer to another using a pen drive. Safety aspect. 5. Important when a pen drive is removed, briefly teach about stopping the external device although it is not part of the curriculum. Make sure that the devise is stopped via control panel before removal. 6. Ask students to label the content carefully. 7. Allways stored CD s in their case and reinsert the cap of the pen drives. Social aspect 8. Make sure every child gets a change to do this activity. 9. Children should learn how to take turns.
Evaluation: Fill in the Blanks. Vocabulary work sheet Example of External storage Media are and. A CD is made of and A can be connected to a USB Slot A can be inserted into a CD drive. Windows Explore can be used to data
