It is also important that users understand the process and benefits of maintaining their machines in top operating condition by keeping them current with the latest operating system updates, correctly configuring virus control, and other beneficial habits. 3 ecollege Supported Browser Set-up Instructions This document is intended as a resource for setting the optimal browser configurations for accessing the ecollege platform. With the exception of modifying cookie settings for Safari, and adding the ecollege domain to the trusted sites list, these instructions will ensure that the browser is set up with the "out-of-thebox" configuration. In addition, ensure that pop-ups have been enabled once in ecollege. Internet Explorer 8 (IE 7 is also supported) In each of the items below, we will be accessing the Internet Options window; therefore, after completing each step, please leave the Internet Options window open. To access Internet Options, please follow the instructions below: 1. Click on the Tools menu at the top right side of the browser window. 2. Click on Internet Options. To Delete Cookies and Cache (Temporary Internet Files) 1. Click on the General tab. 2. Click on Delete in the Browsing history section. 3. Once the Browsing History window opens, mark the boxes next to Temporary Internet Files and Cookies. 4. Click on the Delete button and wait while the files are deleted. Note: Cookies may contain information for a customized web page or may contain log in information for a web site. Deleting all cookies will result in having to re-enter this information. 3

Resetting Security Settings 1. On the Internet Options window, click on the Security tab. 2.

Locate the Reset to drop-down menu at the bottom of the window and select Medium. 4.

While still on the Security tab, click on Trusted Sites (green check mark). 2.

Locate the Reset to drop-down menu at the bottom of the window and select Medium. 4. Then, click the OK button. Adding Trusted Sites 1. While still on the Security tab, click on Trusted Sites (green check mark). 2. Then, click on the Sites button. 3. Add *.ecollege.com and *.next.ecollege.com as trusted web sites. (Enter the site exactly as presented in bold above, and once entered, click Add. ) 4. Click the Close button for trusted sites. 4

After all the above steps are completed, press on the Apply button in the bottom right and then OK to close the Internet Options window.

5 Verifying Cookie Settings The next step is to verify that the cookie handling settings are not set at a level that is too high. In the Internet Options window, click on the Privacy tab and ensure that the slider bar is set no higher than Medium. If you do not see Medium displayed in bold letters, click the Default button. After all the above steps are completed, press on the Apply button in the bottom right and then OK to close the Internet Options window. Close down the existing browser window and open a new Internet Explorer browser from your desktop before signing into your course platform. Firefox 3.5 (PC and Mac) (3.0 is also supported) These instructions will demonstrate how to delete cookies and cache, verify cookie handling, and add trusted sites to the exceptions list. In each of the items below, we will be accessing the Options window; therefore, after completing each step, please leave the Options window open. 1. Click on the Tools menu located at the top of the browser. 2. Select Options. Deleting Cache and Cookies 1. Click on the Privacy tab. 5

6 2. Under the Private Data section, check the box next to "Ask me before clearing private data. 3. Then, click on the Clear Now button. 4. In the pop-up dialog box, check both Cache and Cookies and click on Clear Private Data Now. Note: Cookies may contain information for a customized web page or may contain log in information for a web site. Deleting all cookies will result in having to re-enter this information. Cookie Settings 1. In the Privacy tab under "Cookies," make sure that the "Accept cookies from sites" and "Accept third-party cookies" are checked. In the "keep until" drop down menu, select "they expire. 2. Click on the Exceptions button. 3. Allow *.ecollege.com and *.next.ecollege.com. 4. Click on the Close button. After you make these changes, press OK to close the options menu down. Close the existing Firefox browser and open a new one from your desktop before logging back into your course. Firefox (Mac) Configuring Firefox on a Mac is the same as configuring Firefox on a PC with the exception of accessing the Options menu. To access Options on a Mac, please follow the instructions below. 1. Click on the Firefox Menu. 2. Click on Preferences. 3. Follow the instructions for a Windows computer as listed above. 6

In the Time range to clear: drop down menu, choose Everything. 4. Make sure the box next to Details is pointing up to display details. If it is pointing down, simply click on it. 5. Mark the boxes next to Cookies and Cache and then press Clear Now. Cookie Settings 1. Click on the Tools menu located at the top of the browser. 2. Select Options from the menu. 3. In the window that opens, click on the Privacy tab. 4. In the Firefox will: drop down menu, select Use custom settings for history. 5. Ensure that the boxes are checked next to Accept cookies from sites and Accept thirdparty cookies. Change the Keep until: drop down menu to read they expire. After you make these changes, press OK to close the options menu down. Close the existing Firefox browser and open a new one from your desktop before logging back into your course. 7

On the Preferences toolbar, click to select the Security tab. 4. From the Security dialog box, under Accept Cookies, choose Always. 5. Close the Preferences window. After making these changes with your Safari browser, close down Safari and open a new browser from your desktop before logging back into your course. Chrome 5.0 (Windows only) Deleting Cache and Cookies 1. Click Tools (this appears as a wrench in the top right corner). 2. From the menu, choose Options. 3. Then, click the "Under the Hood" tab. 4. Click the "Clear browsing data " button. When this window pops up there will be different options to select. 5. Make sure that the boxes next to "Empty the Cache" and "Delete Cookies and other site data" are marked. Unmark any other of the options you do not wish to clear. 6. Click "Clear browsing data." 7. Once the data is cleared, close the Options window. 9

10 Cookie Settings 1. Click Tools (this appears as a wrench in the top right corner). 2. From the menu, choose Options. 3. Then, click the "Under the Hood" tab. 4. Click the "Content settings " button. A window will then open. 5. Click on Cookies in the box on the left.
