Senad Basic CS 422 Project 2 Individual sketches 03/04/08 Default commons common for all windows Some commands are common to all of the screens and windows below. Touching any portion of a screen that is not the active window and is the faded out background will take the user back to the previous screen (think of it as the internet back button). Holding down a hand or a finger on any non-active window portion of the screen and dragging up will increase the screen brightness, dragging down towards the floor will decrease it. A baby fence is shown on some of the screens bellow as a shaded out rectangle above the floor on the Wall. This is to protect a baby or a pet touching the screen from entering commands. Keep in mind, as per assignment requirements, this is a simple media system designed for the everyday folk and is not intended for features that a regular desktop/laptop computer may provide a personal user. Sleep mode The sleep mode has a screensaver background image or animation/video. It may be linked to the keywords in the news ticker (e.g. Bulls win would display a bulls logo) or the current weather (e.g. Snow would display a snow covered city park). A current news running ticker is displayed as well as the time and current weather. To escape sleep mode, the user can touch any part of the wall or the tablet (explained below). The user can also send simple commands via voice commands, to turn off sleep the user would say Wall turn off sleep.
Main menu The default main menu has multiple labeled windows. Touching the wall or the tablet (explained below) with one finger can maximize each window to the full size of the wall.
Touching the wall or tablet with two fingers within a window brings up an outline of the window, by dragging your fingers apart the window will increase size or by dragging your fingers closer the window will decrease in size. Voice commands such as <window name> <simple command> will act on the window. Example, Traffic maximize will maximize the traffic window. Multiple windows can be in use at one time. Tablet controller The tablet will only display an outline approximation of the window to allow the user to manipulate the size of the window on the wall. Two fingers inside a black circle will allow the user to manipulate the window size. The tablet will also bring up a keyboard if the user tabs the tablet with all 5 fingers of one hand or another. Not illustrated but the keyboard is a simple white keyboard with black outlines for buttons and letters. Touching sleep will result in resuming the screensaver. Touching room light will result in the wall turning into a white screen at a high intensity. For other colors, change the screensaver and engage sleep. These commands are only available on the tablet
Multimedia The multimedia screen displays a list of movies, sound files and pictures along the right hand side. All file types are in the same list. Touching a file will open it in the media player, the media player interface is standard to any modern media player and selfexplanatory. User can say Wall play Eagles album or Wall play Office Space. To fast forward, Wall fast forward at speed 2.
Touching it with one finger can maximize the display of the media player or the window can be adjusted just like other windows by using two fingers. Weather
The weather screen is self-explanatory. Double taping the weather window will bring up a zip code prompt where the user can specify the location of the weather report. Similarly, while in the weather screen the user can say Wall change zip code.
Bulletin board Bulleting board brings up 3 tool buttons, the paper with the folded corner is for a new note. The T button is for new text and the paintbrush button allows the user to write or draw freely on the wall to be saved as a note.
Settings The settings screen, while not fully illustrated here, allows the user to set things like user privileges, save window layout to be used when only that user is logged in. Set personal and general settings for applications. The settings screen is very similar to the Windows Control Panel screen.
Traffic Traffic screen by default bring up a traffic map of major highways in the vicinity of the user s house. By holding down two fingers on the map and dragging the fingers closer or farther apart the zoom of the map is adjusted.
Double clicking brings up a settings menu for the map allowing the user to ask for directions based on a starting and ending address (type in display below). Allows the user to only show traffic conditions without directions by entering the zip code, leaving the address(s) fields empty and touching OK. Of course, responds to voice commands Wall enter starting address., etc Communications The Wall allows the user to use phone/audio, instant messenger chat or video to communicate to others. Each window is customizable so the video window can be
maximized to full screen if multiple households want to link through their Walls. The user can select a person from the contact list then select Call, Chat, Video, or a combination of those three. Saying Call Bob Jones does the job as well. Saying End call hangs up the phone, End chat ends the conversation, etc There is a slight delay between the processing of voice input and sending the voice to the other person to allow for voice command processing. Double tapping on the Wall brings up a keyboard, this is just in case the user is near the Wall and wants to type a quick message without using the tablet.
Incoming calls are accounted by freezing all current streaming media (if any media is open) and opening a screen as shown below. The user can say Transfer to Room 1 for the call to be transferred to a different Wall or Answer to speak or Ignore to return to the previous screen and send the called to voic .
Calendar The calendar screen is self-explanatory.
Events are modified similar to a text editor, not using any preset interface. Touching a day in the above calendar will pop up a small day schedule which can be edited by touching it and using the keyboard on the tablet.
News News window displays a list of news items. To read the full text the user can touch the item.
The user can read a particular story by touching it in the screen above then pressing OK when done to return to the previous screen.
Directional sound and microphone An array of directional sound speaks ( and directional microphones will be used to allow users to listen to different audio feeds and to allow the users to speak without transmitting ambient noise. For example, if dad is making a phone call only he will be able to hear the person on the phone as to not disturb little Jimmy who is watching cartoons, at the same time little Jimmy s loud cartoons and his laughter will not be transmitted to the person dad is talking to. After logging in using simple voice recognition ( This is Bob. ) and facial recognition each user will be assigned an array of directional speaker/microphone pairs. The system will keep track of which user is where using facial recognition and tracking movement of the original shape that logged in. The number of pairs for each successive user who logs in will be allocated equally from each user who is currently logged in. For example, if 10 pairs are initially available. User A will get all 10 pairs. When user B logs in, he/she will get half of User B s pairs, each will have 5.
Limitation, as the number of users increases, the chances of blocking a sound line-ofsight increases. In a case where the distance between the user and the speaker/microphone pair is suddenly decreased by somebody walking in the line-ofsight the system will attempt to re-route the pairs to compensate. The person blocking the signal will get their feed through the pair that just became blocked and one of their other pairs will be allocated to the person who s feed was just blocked.
