Software Announcement January 19, 1999 Release 1 Overview OS/390 Release 1 consists of Novell Directory Services (NDS) on OS/390 which provides directory support for new and existing Novell Netware Version 3 and Version 4 customers. Novell Network Services for OS/390 Release 1 is available at no additional charge to customers who have an OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 license or a later release, and also have the OS/390 V2R6 Security Server feature enabled and licensed with IBM. IBM plans to integrate Novell Network Services into the Security Server feature of OS/390 at a future date. Clients can log-in and administer their networks using Novell Network Services running on S/390. This release provides Novell Directory Services (NDS) support and enables the reduction and consolidation of PC-based NDS servers. Replicas (Novell s recovery design) can be eliminated on individual servers and put on an OS/390 server a server known for its outstanding reliability, backup, and data integrity strengths. Key Prerequisites Hardware Requirements IBM 9672 Parallel Enterprise Server Model G3 or newer class processor microcode (needed for use of the PLO instruction) at a minimum If using the IPX protocol, the Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature with updated Licensed Internal Code (LIC) is required Software Requirements OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 and OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 Security Server enabled and licensed with IBM If using the Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature, S/390 Open Systems Adapter Support Facility (OSA/SF) Version 1 Release 2 with service level of APAR OW33393 is required Planned Availability Date February 26, 1999 At a Glance Customer support for central and hierarchical management of users, groups, network, security and applications NetWare IP support in addition to IPX/SPX (extends full function of Novell Network Services over TCP/IP network) No Gateway required A powerful, scalable, and reliable NDS for NetWare PC clients and browsers NDS running on S/390 is transparent to administrators and clients Potential Cost savings through long-term product ownership cost, reduction in hardware and software costs, and leverage of existing resources No additional charge for OS/390 V2R6 licensees having OS/390 V2R6 Security Server enabled For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM North America Sales Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: LE010 EXTRA! Description By having an enterprise server capability for Novell networks, customers can consolidate and reduce the number of servers they manage. Specifically, this release offers Novell Directory Services (NDS). The organization of the NDS tree enables centralized administration by giving supervisors the capability to log-in to the tree on any server (including S/390) and administer any objects for the tree. This permits single point of control for administering object rights (permissions) and for adding, changing or deleting users, files, printers, servers, and so forth. The Directory tree is a loosely-coupled database. The tree s hierarchy of objects is grouped into logical entities called partitions which typically represent local/regional collections of network information. Each partition is physically represented by multiple replicas, which reside on specific servers. For example, a Directory tree may have partitions for each of three branches (Boston, NYC, and Washington), and each partition may have three (the suggested minimum from Novell) replicas on individual servers for a total of nine physical replicas which together form the logical tree. These replicas can provide redundancy and thus, recovery, should any particular server become unavailable. The industry-acknowledged strength of OS/390 is its availability, recovery, and capacity. Customers can move more of their tree replicas onto the S/390 server, thus reducing the requirement for multiple servers that currently hold replicas. This is the fundamental idea behind server consolidation. Note: Having an OS/390 server in the network does not eliminate the need for other servers. As mentioned above, there should be a minimum of three replicas for each partition. NetWare customers can reduce the need to maintain and administer a large number of servers for recovery purposes. They can simplify their administration of the Directory tree by storing the replicas on the OS/390 server. Release 1 is installed via SMP/E. After the installation is complete, customer must configure the OS/390 server to their specifications as described in the Installation/Configuration Guide. Customers, who use IPX protocols, will require the Fast Ethernet OSA2 feature with updated Licensed Internal Code (LIC). Product Positioning Release 1 is specifically designed to meet the requirements of customers who require centralized management of their network environment from a single point of control, the S/390 Server. can help customers consolidate their existing Novell NDS Servers. Customers running OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 or later will be able to exploit Novell Network Services for OS/390 capabilities centralized network, security, and directory services across heterogeneous enterprise-wide environments. Hardware and Software Support Services SmoothStart /Installation Services: IBM SmoothStart or Installation Services will not be provided for Novell Network Services for OS/390 Release 1.
