A+ Certification also serves as the foundation for computer service professionals who are pursuing other valuable industry certifications, such as the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, and Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). While preparing for the A+ Certification exam, students will gain comprehensive knowledge in PC hardware and Windows operating systems, networking, printers, and customer service. Hands-on labs using the latest computer components and operating systems will also provide an opportunity for students to enhance their skills in assembling, disassembling, servicing, troubleshooting, and upgrading advanced computer and networking systems. Prerequisites: None. Required Materials: Note: You may purchase your course materials from any source including the college book store, Amazon.com, directly from the publisher, or any other source you wish. You may rent text books at the college bookstore or online at sites such as: www.chegg.com Text Book: A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, 8 th edition, Jean Andrews, Course Technology/Cengage Learning. ISBN-13: 978-1133135081. This book covers the current version of the A+ exam (220-801 & 220-802). This text book is available at the Reserve Desk at the college library. You may check out the book for three hours at a time and it cannot leave the library but you may use it instead of purchasing a text book if you wish. Go to the Reserve Desk and ask for the text book for CIS 120. Access to a computer with reliable Internet access and usual college-level student materials (notebook, pens, etc). Tutoring: If you feel you need more help than I or other classmates can offer there is free tutoring available in the college Tutoring Center. All tutoring at the college Tutoring Center is free to students. Each semester I try to have a dedicated tutor assigned for this class. I will inform you when tutoring services are arranged for this class. Additional Support: You will be using Blackboard for this class with links to the syllabus and all graded material. You can access Blackboard at: https://gcccd.blackboard.com You may obtain support from the college Help Desk for issues concerning logging on to Blackboard. Please visit the college Help Desk at: http://www.cuyamaca.edu/helpdesk Class Format: This class is taught in the classroom with a combination of lecture, demonstration, question and answer, student discussion, independent study, and hands-on lab. You are expected to spend at least 3 hours and 40 minutes each week outside of class studying course material. You are expected to read and review all of the course material to be covered each week before coming to class. Participation: You are expected to attend every class and to be on time. You must also logon to the class Blackboard site at least once a week. If an entire week goes by with no activity on your part either through attendance, email communication or completion of a graded event you will be dropped from the class. It is therefore imperative that you let me know if for any reason your participation in the class will be interrupted. It is your responsibility to keep up with the class schedule and to complete graded events when they are available. Various graded events are available for specific time periods. Graded events must be completed during the time they are available--no exceptions! Once dropped from the class you will not be reinstated for any reason. Email Communication: Any time you communicate with me via email you MUST put the course number (CIS 120) and section number in the subject line of your email. For example: Subject: CIS 120 Sect 9999 Question about disk drives. IF YOU DO NOT PUT THE CLASS NUMBER IN THE SUBJECT LINE I MAY NOT RECEIVE YOUR EMAIL SINCE I USE FILTERS ON MY EMAIL ACCOUNT. I have up to 150 students in five different class sections during any given semester--it is difficult to tell what class you are in unless you specify in your email. Also make sure your name is somewhere in the email--i can t always tell who surferdude@hotmail.com is I m sure you understand! REMEMBER THIS IT IS IMPORTANT! cis120--s16--syllabus--on--campus--5155--12--week--andrews--8th--220-801--802-2 - 12/29/2015 11:26 AM

Certification exams must be scheduled, paid for, and taken at an official CompTIA Certification Exam Center. Further information about where to take the certification exam will be provided. In addition to this class I suggest you review additional A+ Certification exam study material to include web-based materials, study guides, sample practice question guides, additional reference material, and the CompTIA web site prior to taking the exams. Orientation Quiz: In order for me to determine that you are correctly enrolled in this class, are active in Blackboard, and are familiar with class policies and procedures you are required to take an Orientation Quiz by Wednesday of the first week of class. See Blackboard Announcements and the 1 st week of the class schedule below for further information. The Orientation Quiz is contained in Module 01 of the class Blackboard site. Failure to take this quiz by the due date will result in you being dropped from the class. Graded Events: This class consists of assignments and graded events contained in Blackboard. These events must be completed according to the class schedule attached to the end of this syllabus. Graded events consist of the following: Quizzes. There are a total of 10 quizzes worth 10 points each. You may take the class quizzes as often as you like in order to increase your score while the quizzes are available. Once a quiz is closed you may no longer take the quiz and the score of your last attempt is recorded as your final quiz grade. Exams. There is one Midterm Exam and one Final Exam. Exams are worth 100 points each and are multiple choice. You may take these exams one time. There is no make-up opportunity for the Final Exam. If you are unavailable to take the exam (due to a legitimate reason) you must notify me prior to the exam date. If you take the exam for any reason other than the time it is normally scheduled without notifying me ahead of time your exam results will be graded on a 75% scale. Lab Notebook. Each student must maintain a Lab Notebook that is professional, well-organized, and uses tabs. The Lab Notebook is worth a total of 100 points and is graded in two parts. The notebook must contain the following: Binder label information including your name, course, and section number. First Page: Table of contents First Tab: Class syllabus Second Tab: Class handouts Third Tab: Class notes Fourth Tab: Lab assignments in chronological order from Lab 1 to Lab 30. Based on techniques learned in class, demonstrate the ability to research, compare, purchase and install computer and hardware and software components to complete an optimal computer system. 4. Utilize skills learned in class to design, build, operate and troubleshoot a limited wired and wireless computer network. 5. Identify prevailing security risks to computer systems (both hardware and software) and explain the precautions used to ensure adequate computer security that keeps data safe from viruses, loss or damage. 6. Using computer component selection and optimization, component integration, test and troubleshooting procedures and techniques learned in class, develop a computer hardware and operating systems software solution to a real-world business computer resource selection, implementation and maintenance problem. Class Policies: You must logon to the class Blackboard site at least once a week. If an entire week goes by with no activity on your part either through attendance, email, or completion of a graded event you will be dropped from the class. The best way to contact me is via email. I will respond to you within 24-48 hours. If you do not hear from me within that time send me another email. No use of cell phones or other electronic devices including laptops, ipads, etc. during the lecture part of the class. Electronic devices are allowed during lab. If you use a device with audio use earphones. If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing you will earn a 0 on that assignment and I will report the incident to the Student Affairs Office. You are expected to be courteous to each other and to the instructor. You will be asked to leave the class for display of behavior the instructor deems as disruptive to the learning environment. You are expected to work actively with your peers, sharing, listening and explaining, questioning and answering. You are responsible for being prepared for participation in class activities and in group work, and for assisting your peers in understanding the materials provided when working in a group environment. Class Schedule (see next page): The following schedule is provided to keep you on track throughout the semester. You should use it throughout the semester to gauge your progress in the class and to ensure you are covering all of the material. Students are required to complete all assignments during the weeks indicated in the schedule. Failure to complete all assignments when they are available will result in a zero grade. cis120--s16--syllabus--on--campus--5155--12--week--andrews--8th--220-801--802-4 - 12/29/2015 11:26 AM
