Usig your otebook Coectig a power source You ca use either a AC adapter or a rechargeable battery pack as a power source. Usig the AC adapter To use the AC adapter, proceed as follows: 1 Plug the cable attached to the AC adapter (1) ito the DC I coector (2) o the computer. 2 Plug oe ed of the power cord (3) ito the AC adapter. 3 Plug the other ed of the power cord ito a AC outlet (4). Usig your otebook Usig the battery pack You ca use a battery pack as a source of power. The battery pack supplied with your computer is ot fully charged at the time of purchase. Isertig the battery pack To isert the battery, proceed as follows: 1 Isert the tabs (1) o the battery ito the otches (2) ad push the battery dow ito the compartmet util it clicks ito place. 2 Slide the lock lever ito the Lock positio to secure the battery o the computer. Whe the computer is directly coected to AC power ad has a battery pack iserted i the battery bay, it uses power from the AC outlet. Make sure the cover is closed before isertig the battery pack. 24
Usig your otebook Chargig the battery pack To charge the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Coect the AC adapter to the computer. 2 Isert the battery pack. The computer automatically charges the battery (the battery idicator light flashes i a double blik patter as the battery charges). Whe the battery is 85% full, the battery idicator light turs off. idicates the status of the battery pack i the battery bay. 25 battery idicator light status O Sigle blik Double blik Off Meaig The computer is usig battery power. The battery is ruig out of power. The battery is chargig. The computer is usig AC power. Whe the battery is ruig out of power, both the battery ad power idicators blik. Keep the battery pack i the computer while it is directly coected to AC power. The battery pack cotiues to charge while you are usig the computer. If the battery level falls below 10%, you should either attach the AC adapter to recharge the battery or shut dow your computer ad isert a fully charged battery. You ca exted battery life by chagig the power maagemet modes i the PowerPael utility. The battery pack supplied with your computer is a lithium io battery ad ca be recharged ay time. Chargig a partially discharged battery does ot affect battery life. The battery idicator light is o while you use the battery pack as a power source. Whe the battery life is early depleted, both the battery ad power idicators start flashig.
Usig your otebook For some software applicatios ad some peripheral devices, your computer may ot eter Hiberate mode eve whe battery life is low. To avoid loss of data whe usig battery power, you should save your data frequetly ad maually activate a power maagemet mode, such as Stadby or Hiberate. Whe the computer is directly coected to AC power ad has a battery pack iserted i the battery bay, it uses power from the AC outlet. Removig the battery pack To remove the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Tur off the computer ad close the cover. 2 Slide the lock lever (1) to the Ulock positio. 3 Slide ad hold the release lever (2) as idicated, ad lift the battery away by usig the cetral tab. 26 You ca remove the battery pack without turig off the computer if it is coected to the mais voltage (AC adapter). Close the cover before you remove the battery pack. You may lose data if you remove the battery pack while the computer is o ad ot coected to the AC adapter or if you remove the battery while the computer is i Stadby mode.

Usig your otebook 3 If ecessary, press <F>+<F5> to adjust the brightess cotrols for the LCD display. To icrease the brightess, use the up or right arrow keys. To decrease, use the dow or left arrow keys. <F>+<F5> is oly possible if Widows is ruig. If you press the power butto for more tha four secods, the computer will tur off.! Usig your otebook Settig up your otebook with Soy otebook Setup The Soy otebook Setup utility allows you to cosult system iformatio, specify prefereces for system behaviour, ad set up password protectio for your VAIO otebook. To use Soy otebook Setup, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start butto o the Widows taskbar. 2 I All Programs, select Soy otebook Setup ad the click Soy otebook Setup. The Soy otebook Setup widow appears. 29
Usig your otebook Tab About This Computer Iitial Settig Power O Password Descriptio Displays system iformatio, icludig memory capacity, serial umber, ad BIOS versio. Selects the drive ad device order you wish to use for loadig the operatig system. You ca specify the hard drive as well as other drives iserted ito your computer. You ca chage the volume of the souds played while the operatig system is loadig. Sets the password to secure your computer. If you use this optio, remember the password at all times. If you forget the password, you caot chage this settig aymore, ad you will ot be able to start your computer. 30 Device Bass Boost Shortcut keys Disables ports or devices to release resources to the system. To chage the port settigs, select a port ad click Settigs i the Device tab. Turs the Bass Boost fuctio o/off (oly with headphoes). You ca also check the effect of the Bass Boost fuctio by selectig a soud file sample ad playig it. Chage the scree resolutio for both the computer LCD scree ad the exteral display, or oly for the exteral display automatically. Use the shortcut key (<F>+<F7> key) to chage the display or access the settigs. 3 Select the tab for the item you wat to chage. 4 Oce fiished, click OK. The item has bee chaged. For more iformatio about each optio, click Help o the Soy otebook Setup scree to display the help file. If you ope Soy otebook Setup as a limited user, the oly the About This Computer tab will be visible.
Usig your otebook Shuttig dow your otebook It is importat that you shut dow your computer properly so you do ot lose usaved data. To shut dow your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start butto. 2 Click Tur Off Computer. The Tur off computer scree appears. 3 Select Tur Off. Wait for your computer to tur off automatically. The power idicator turs off. 4 Tur off ay peripherals coected to your computer. Respod to ay prompts warig you to save documets or to cosider other users. If you are uable to shut dow your computer; - Close all software i use. - If applicable, remove the PC Card. To do so, double-click the Safely Remove Hardware ico i the taskbar. Select the hardware you wat to uplug ad click Stop. - Discoect ay USB devices. - Press <Alt>+<F4> ad select Tur Off from the scree that appears. If this does ot work, you ca press the power butto for more tha four secods. This will shut dow the computer. This operatio may result i loss of data. If you are ot usig the computer for a short period of time, you ca save power by usig the Stadby mode. To eter Stadby mode, press the <F> ad <Esc>-keys simultaeously. Or go to the Start meu, select Tur Off Computer, ad the click Stad By. For more details o power maagemet, see Usig power savig modes (page 59). 31

The twelve fuctio keys alog the top of the keyboard are used to perform desigated tasks. For example, i may applicatios, <F1> is the Help key. The task associated with each fuctio key may vary from oe applicatio to the other. The <Prit Scree> key takes a electroic sapshot of the scree ad moves it to the Widows Clipboard. You ca the paste the screeshot ito a documet ad prit it. The <Isert>, <Back Space> ad <Delete> keys eable you to make correctios. 33 avigatio keys (5) Applicatio key (6) umeric keypad area (7) Operator keys (8-11-12) These keys eable you to move the cursor o the scree. The Applicatio key displays a shortcut meu; pressig this key is equivalet to clickig the right mouse butto. Cotais the keys foud o a typical calculator. Use the umeric keypad area to type umbers or to perform mathematical calculatios such as additio ad subtractio. ote that you must press the <um Lock> key to activate the umeric keypad. As a result, if you are usig the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, the operatio will be iterrupted. The power idicator light is off i this mode. To activate Hiberate mode, proceed as follows: Press <F>+<F12>. The Hiberatig scree appears ad the otebooks eters Hiberate mode. Alteratively, Click Start, ad the Tur Off Computer. I the Tur off computer scree, hold dow the <Shift>-key ad press Hiberate. To retur to ormal mode, proceed as follows: Tur o the computer by pressig the power butto. The computer returs to its previous state.

The curret power profile will be displayed i a tooltip. To chage profiles, proceed as follows: 1 Right-click the PowerPael ico i the taskbar ad select Profiles. 2 I the Profiles meu, select a profile. The appropriate power settigs are activated. Whe you use the battery pack as power source, your system selects the Maximum Battery Life power maagemet profile by default. If you select a differet power maagemet profile while usig battery power, the same profile will automatically be selected the ext time you use the battery pack to power your computer. 63

It reduces the brightess of the display ad puts the system ito Stadby mode after a specified time period. Ultimate Battery Life - exteds the Maximum Battery Life by disablig some devices.! Whe you select this profile, it completely shuts off the power of the optical drive to save some extra power for loger battery life. The system ca either read or write from or to the optical drive, moreover the drive does ot start spiig at all. If you wat to use the optical drive, retur to Maximum Battery Life. Double-click the PowerPael ico i the taskbar ad select the Battery tab. The Battery tab i the PowerPael widow cotais iformatio such as the estimated battery life remaiig ad chargig time. Display the Battery Iformatio toolbar o the scree, which shows the battery status ico, the percetage of remaiig capacity ad the amout of ruig time left i the battery. There are three possible icos: Ico Adaptive Battery Life Performace Actio This cotrol automatically selects the CPU optimal clock speed ad power voltage accordig to the state i which the computer i which the computer is used..this will be the default ico whe the computer is coected to the mais supply. This cotrol helps to reduce the otebook s power cosumptio by decreasig the CPU clock speed ad the power voltage. This ico appears whe you right-click the CPU ico i the taskbar ad select Profiles ad the Ultimate Battery Life. This will be the default ico whe the computer ruig o batteries. This cotrol helps to maximize the CPU clock speed. The computer ca the be used at its maximum performace. This will be the default ico whe playig games or watchig a DVD. 68 Editig a power profile To edit the power maagemet settigs of a power profile, proceed as follows: 1 Right-click the PowerPael ico i the taskbar ad select Edit/Create Profiles from the meu. The Profile Editor widow appears. 2 Click the profile you wat to edit o the left of the scree. 3 Double-click the power profile property (Hiberate, Stadby ) you wat to modify o the right of the scree. A optio list or a dialog box will appear 4 Make your settigs. 5 Click the File meu ad the click Save.

Creatig a power profile To create a power profile, proceed as follows: 1 Right-click the PowerPael ico i the taskbar ad select Edit/Create Profiles from the meu. The Profile Editor widow appears. 2 Select ew from the File meu. 3 I the Create ew Profile dialog box, check the appropriate optio butto to specify the type of power maagemet profile that you wat to create ad click OK. 4 Select the ew power maagemet settigs you would like for the device. 5 Click the File meu ad the click Save. 69 Maagig performace with Performace Balacer The Performace Balacer is istalled by default together with PowerPael to set up the performace of your computer depedig o the LCD brightess ad the quietess of the CPU fa.
