10 Finding the Average: Mean, Median, and Mode In statistics, there are three kinds of averages: mean, median, and mode. -MEAN: The mean of a group of numbers is the average of the numbers. -MEDIAN: The median of a group of numbers is the number that is exactly in the middle when the numbers are arranged numerically. Note: For even sets of numbers, take the average of the middle two numbers. -MODE: The mode of a group of numbers is the number that appears most often. Example Soccer Goals Before you do any computing, you should always write the numbers in numerical order, from smallest to largest: MEAN: Add all the numbers together ( =10) then divide (10) by the number of numbers added together (9), so 10 9 = 0. MEDIAN: In this example, the number in the middle is 1. MODE: In this example, the number that reoccurs the most is 5. For each problem below, find the mean, median, and mode. Basketball Points Touchdowns Mean: Median: Mode:. Mean: Median: Mode: Golf Scores Wrestling Wins Mean: Median: Mode: 4. Mean: Median: Mode: Boxing Wins Volleyball Wins Mean: Median: Mode: 6. 11 5th Grade Shooting Score! Practice Finding Mean Here are the shooting scores of the players on the Rockets and the players on the Jaguars. Find out the mean shooting scores of each team. Mean is the average of a data set. It can be found by finding the sum of the set, then dividing by the number of data points. Example: There is a data set of 1, 4,,, 6, and. The sum is = 18. The number of data points is 6. Therefore, the mean is 18/6 = The Rockets The Jaguars Student Name Shooting Score Student Name Shooting Score Julie 15 Patrick 17 Mikey 0 Ron 17 Sally 0 Brian 18 Stephanie 18 Joe 18 Adam 14 Rita 10 Peter 1 Ann 0 Shaun 15 Joseph 0 Martin 0 Erika 1 Christine 17 April 0 Kimmy 1 Bill 1 The team with the best score based on the mean is Copyright by Education.com More worksheets at

12 It s Freezing! Practice Finding Mode 5th Grade Mary recorded the temperature at the Southpole during periods of time in December, January, and February. Find the mode of each set of temperatures. Don t forget to show your work. The mode of a data set means the number that occurs most often. It can be found by ordering each data set from lowest to highest, then seeing which number occurs most frequently. Example: The data set is 8, 6, 1, 4, 1, 4, 1. Write the numbers in order = 1, 1,, 4, 4, 6, 8. Find the numbers that appear most often = 1 (twice) and 4 (twice). Therefore, the modes of this data set are 1 and 4. December Record for 10 days 0, -4, 1, -, -, -4, 0,, -5, -4 Mode = January Record for 15 days -, -5,, -, -5, -4,, 7, -5, -, -,, 1,, 0 Mode = February Record for 0 days 5, 7,, -1, 8, 4, -, 0, 5, -1, 7,, 5, 1, -10,, 1, 0, -, -4 Mode = Copyright by Education.com More worksheets at

13 What s the Range? 5th Grade Find the range of each data set. Don t forget to show your work. The range of a data set is the difference between the highest and lowest values in the set. Range can be found by ordering the data from least to greatest value, then subtracting the lowest value from the highest value in the set. Example: The data set is: 1, 11, 15, 1, 10, Write them in order = 10, 11, 1, 1, 14, 15. Find the highest value = 15.. Find the lowest value = Subtract 10 from 15 = The range of this data set is 5. Pretend you re shopping for a bicycle. What is the range of prices? $155 $148 $150 $18 $18 $179 The price range of bicycles = Tommy lifted many different kinds of weights. What is the range of weights he lifted? 0 lbs. lbs. 5 lbs. 7 lbs. 4 lbs. 8 lbs. 19 lbs. lbs. 4 lbs. lbs. 14 Squares, Cubes, and Roots Squares, cubes, square roots, and cube roots may seem like difficult math problems at first, but once you learn how to solve them, you will find that they are both easy and fun! - The square of a number is the number times itself. - The square root of a number is a number that can be multiplied by itself to give the original number. It is the inverse operation of squaring a number. - The cube of a number is the number multiplied by itself twice. - The cube root of a number is, a value that when cubed, gives the original number. It is the inverse operation of cubing a number. Examples Square: 5 = 5 x 5 = 5 Square Root: 5 = 5 (5x5=5) Cube: 5 = 5 x 5 x 5 = 15 Cube Root: 15 = 5 (5x5x5=15) Write the square or cube of each number. 1) 1 = 4) 5 = 7) 48 = ) 4 = 5) = 8) = ) 9 = 6) 6 = 9) 7 = Write the square root of each number. 1) 16 = 4) 81 = 7) 49 = ) 9 = 5) 1 = 8) 6 = ) 5 = 6) 4 = 9) 100 = Write the cube root of each number. 1) 64 = 4) 16 = 7) 4 = ) 1 = 5) 8 = 8) 0 = ) 15 = 6) 1,78 = 9) 79 = Copyright by Education.com

15 Math Algebra Multiplying with Exponents An exponent is the simplest way to show how many times a number is multiplied by itself. Example: 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 The number 4 is multiplied by itself 5 times. 4 5 exponent Exponent is the number of times the base number is multiplied We can write base Base is the number Multiplying numbers with exponents Example: We know that Therefore, x 4 = 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 4 = 4 x 4 x x 4 = 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 Or we can use this formula if the bases are the same number. A m x A n (m + n) = A where A represents a number Rewrite the expressions. See the example. ( + ) x = = x = 4 x = x = x = 9 8 x = Now, find the value of the expressions below. See the example. Example: 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 The number 4 is multiplied by itself 5 times. We can write Example: We can write (4 ) (4 ) 4 5 exponent base When the exponent is raised to the power, we multiply the exponent and the power. Or we can use this formula if the bases are the same number. Exponent is the number of times the base number is multiplied Base is the number = (4 ) x (4 ) x (4 ) = (4 x 4) x (4 x 4) x (4 x 4) = 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 = m (A ) n = 4 6 (m x n) A where A represents a number Rewrite the expressions.
