3 3 Ope ni ng 6 Have students work in pairs. Display the following: Ask the students to discuss the following questions, based on the display of polygons: 1. What is a polygon? 2. Can you name some specific polygons? After the students have talked for a few utes, share. Ask: What is a polygon? A polygon is a 2-dimensional shape with straight edges for sides. Ask: Why is a heart not a polygon? A heart is not a polygon because it has some rounded edges. Ask: What names of specific polygons did you think of? Responses will vary. Possible responses: triangles, squares, rectangles, hexagons, etc. Define the following terms for the class, if they have not already been discussed: T ria ngle - a polygon with three edges Quadrila t e ra l a polygon with four edges Pe nt a go n a polygon with five edges H e xago n a polygon with six edges

4 4 T e ac he r prese nt s M at h game : Gue ss What! - I de nt i f y P o l ygo ns 10 Present Matific s episode Gue ss What! - I de nt i f y P o l ygo ns to the class, using the projector. The goal of the episode is to identify polygons by their number of edges. Example : Ask: Which shape should we choose? Click on the polygon that the students indicate. A question will appear over the monster s head. Read the question to the students. Students should answer based on the chosen polygon. You can move and rotate the polygon to help the students, if necessary. Click on or, as the students indicate. If the answer is correct, the monster will swallow the polygons that it has detered are not your polygon and then ask another question. If the answer is incorrect, the monster will look down, and the question will wiggle. The monster will continue to ask questions until it can identify the polygon that the students have picked.

Circulate, answering questions as necessary.

6 6 M at h P rac t i c e : I de nt i f yi ng P o l ygo ns - Advanc e d Wo rkshe e t 15 Display the following drawing: Ask: What polygons do you see in the dog? There are two eyes, which are sq uares. There are two ears, which are triangles. There is one face, which is a hexagon. The body is made up of a triangle and a quadrilateral (a paral l e l o gram). The four legs are made up of quadrilaterals (three rect angl e s and a t rape zo i d). (It is reasonable for the students to identify all of the legs as rectangles.) The tail is a quadrilateral (a trapezoid). Distribute paper to the students. Ask them to create their own polygon drawing. They can color it, if there is time. Ask them to swap papers with a partner. The partners should discuss what shapes they see in each other s drawings. Collect the drawings when the students are done, to display later.

7 7 Cl o si ng 4 Ask: What is a polygon? A polygon is a 2-dimensional shape with straight edges for sides. Say: I m thinking of a polygon that has more edges than a hexagon. It has an even number of edges. It has fewer than 10 edges. How many edges does it have? It has eight edges. Say: That s right. It s called an o c t ago n. Now I m thinking of a new polygon. It has twice as many edges as a pentagon. How many edges does it have? It has 10 edges. Say: That s right. It s called a de c ago n. Now I m thinking of a polygon that has the same number of edges as a square. What is the general name for any polygon with the same number of sides as a square? It s called a quadrilateral.
