ow does 3D Printing work?
What is 3D Printing? Additive Manufacturing is the process of making a 3D, solid object of almost any shape from a digital model
How Does 3D Printing Work? Basic Process: Design using 3D modeling software
How Does 3D Printing Work? Basic Process: Design using 3D modeling software Send model to the machine
How Does 3D Printing Work? Basic Process: Design using 3D modeling software Send model to the machine Model printed layer by layer

How Does 3D Printing Work? 3D printing is considered distinct because it uses an additive process to create items, as opposed to a subtractive process

Fused Deposition Modeling
Fused Deposition Modeling Think of Fused Deposition Modeling as operating an extremely precise glue gun to draw a 3D object layer by layer. Spooled filament (similar to weed wacker line) is fed to the printer by motors, then melted by a heater inside the hot end, and extruded through the nozzle as a liquid onto the print bed. The filament immediately hardens and fuses to the layers below, layer by layer, until the 3D object is formed. Currently this is the most common method of 3D printing for Desktop printers. While cost effective, FDM can sometimes struggle with sharp corners and overhangs, requiring secondary support material (rafting).
Different kinds of 3D Printers The difference in the main types of 3D Printing mostly comes down to how these layers are assembled. The two main kinds we will look at are Cartesian and Polar...
Different kinds of 3D Printers But there are also other kinds, like Delta and SCARA.
Cartesian 3D Printers z x y Cartesian printers are the most common style. They consist of a nozzle that can move left & right and backwards & forwards along rails. The platform moves down as the print head builds the model, one layer at a time.
Polar 3D Printers Polar 3D printers have a very simple design. A nozzle is supported by two vertical rails, allowing it to move up and down. The entire build platform moves and rotates, allowing the nozzle to print forwards & backwards and left & right.
Polar vs Cartesian A big difference between cartesian and polar printers are how they map out each layer to print. Cartesian printers use cartesian coordinates. Polar printers use polar coordinates.
Cartesian If you have studied the XY axis in math class, you know a bit about cartesian coordinates. Imagine standing at the center of a grid. Cartesian coordinates tell you where to go based on how many steps to take forward or backward and how many steps to take to the left or right.
Polar Imagine standing at the center of a circle. Polar coordinates tell you where to go by telling you how many degrees to spin to your left, and then how many steps to take forward.
Polar 3D Printers! Advantages include: You do not have to level the printers like cartesian printers. This design requires fewer parts so less things can go wrong. Students can repair and maintain printers easily.
Polar vs Cartesian 3D printers use these coordinate systems to tell the print heads where to go and print in order to make each shape.
Overhang 3D printers are not good at printing on empty air.
Overhang If they experience an overhang - for example the lid of a baseball cap - they will use a support structure to help stabilize while it prints. The support structure should be easy to break away.
