5 Executive Summary: Nearly 80% of manufacturers surveyed believe 3D printing represents a competitive advantage Almost two thirds are using it to produce prototype parts, followed by presentation models and jigs and fixtures Over 50% of manufacturers cited accelerating product development as one of their highest priorities for 2018 Executive Summary: 34% are focused on reducing tooling costs by 3D printing molds Respondents gave high marks to producing complex parts that cannot be made using conventional machining and milling 30% of respondents said their budget for 3D printing will remain the same in 2018 as it was in 2017; an additional 20% plan to increase their spend during the next year 3d results report/

The laser traces the pattern of each cross section of the 3D design onto a bed of powder. After one layer is built, the bed lowers and another layer is built on top of the existing layers, until every layer is built and the part is complete
