1 Release Notes: MaterialUniverse Data Module for GRANTA MI December 2014 Release The Granta MaterialUniverse data module provides engineering, economic, and environmental property profiles designed for like-to-like comparisons across the whole spectrum of material and processing possibilities. It contains over 3,700 records providing physical, cost, mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, durability, environmental data on virtually all purchasable engineering materials, plus extensive data on over 240 processes. What s new in this release? This updated version of the MaterialUniverse includes Updated material prices New polymer records for PC+PBT and PC+PET Extended coverage of thermoset resins Updated polymer linking to improve coverage and accuracy Compositional data updates Traceability of environmental data ASM Medical Materials linking Improved Additive Manufacturing coverage Improved Magnetic Materials coverage Producer Update See the following sections for details: 2014 Granta Design Ltd 1

2 1. Updated material prices New prices are available for all 3,900+ materials in MaterialUniverse. These have been generated using an enhanced version of Granta s price model. Use up-to-date prices, reflecting current differences between material types and classes. Apply in cost reduction initiatives. Apply in trade-off studies e.g. cost vs mass; plastic vs metal. 2. New polymer records for PC+PBT and PC+PET Coverage of PC+Polyester blends extended to include filled, impact modified, and flame retarded grades of PC+PBT and PC+PET. 13 new grades: Four unfilled and three glass fiber filled grades of PC+PBT. Three unfilled and three glass fiber filled grades of PC+PET. Provides extended coverage of these important polymer blends that are commonly used for automotive, outdoor, electrical component and metal replacement applications. 3. Extended coverage of thermoset resins Five unfilled grades of vinyl ester added to the thermoset resins branch exhibit performance between low cost polyesters and higher performance epoxies. Includes: Standard, Novolac, flexible, and two flame retarded grades. Overview record that summarizes the strengths, limitations, and typical uses. Extends coverage to include this important class of thermoset resin, which is increasingly being considered for sheet molding compounds (SMC) and wind turbine applications. 4. Updated polymer and metal linking to improve coverage and accuracy Improved linking for polymers and metals between MaterialUniverse and the Granta reference databases. MaterialUniverse records are matched to equivalent records in the Granta reference databases, based on composition, providing more information for the user. Provides greater accuracy in the identification of equivalent or similar grades Granta Design Ltd 2

3 5. Compositional data updates Revised and updated compositional information provides better classification and screening of materials. Includes the following changes: The number of compositional summary attributes has been increased and expanded to cover all materials. The following attributes are available for screening in all selection subsets: - Form - Material family - Base material - %filler (by weight) - Filler/reinforcement - Filler/reinforcement form - Additive - Renewable content The impurities in metal alloys are now listed in the compositional summary attribute. Detailed compositional information has been added for all metallic magnetic materials. Provide greater filtering capability on material form and composition. 6. Traceability of environmental data Sources of environmental data have been added for embodied energy and carbon footprint for primary production. A new Sources note lists the various sources used to create the datasheet values and quotes the published values. Values for materials where no published data is available are calculated using a model. These values are market as estimates (indicated with an asterisk on the datasheet). High visibility of the underlying sources used to create the datasheet values. The variation in source values shows the level of scatter in published data and how that relates to the range quoted on the material datasheet. 4 7. ASM Medical Materials linking Cross database links have been added to enable GRANTA MI users who have both MaterialUniverse and ASM Medical Materials to see the two related materials linked. A new ASM Medical Materials datasheet attribute in MaterialUniverse displays the name of the linked ASM Medical material with a hyperlink to the online datasheet. Details are as follows: Requires subscription, and internet connection, to access the on-line datasheets. Provides access to in-depth information on biological response and drug compatibility properties for materials and coatings used in Cardiovascular, Orthopedic, Neurological, and Surgical medical devices. Includes information on previously approved medical devices and full traceability to the published literature and FDA device approvals information. Gain direct access to extensive information on a material s biological response and use in medical devices in this high quality, peer reviewed database. 8. Improved Additive Manufacturing coverage To improve the representation of the current status of additive manufacturing the Rapid prototyping folder has been renamed Additive manufacturing and the existing processes have been updated and the following six processes added: Binder printing Direct metal deposition Mask projection stereolithography Electron beam melting Selective laser melting Ultrasonic consolidation In addition: Links to materials, which can be processed by the additive manufacturing processes, have been added. 2 new ProcessUniverse records (Rheocasting and Thixoforming) for semi-solid metal casting processes have been added, improving coverage. Improved coverage on additive manufacturing, that is becoming increasing popular for small production runs of complex parts 2014 Granta Design Ltd 4

5 9. Improved Magnetic Materials coverage The coverage of magnetic materials in MaterialUniverse has been improved for the two key material groups of neodymium iron boron and samarium cobalt. This involved: Updating the tree structure and withdrawing old records. Adding new records so that the they cover the range of magnetic materials available within this group, with: - 45 Neodymium iron boron records - 30 Samarium cobalt records Composition data exists, which enables the records to be used in environmental and critical material reports. New folder-level records have been created to explain the material groups and to make it clear what the differences between the different records are. 10. Producer Update The records within the Producers table have been updated to ensure that contact information, such as hyperlinks are up to date, they contain information about the status of the producer and new producers have been added to improve the coverage. How can installing this release help you? Improved coverage of magnetic materials particularly relevant for reporting on critical materials Extended coverage of additive manufacturing techniques New traceability information for environmental data provides confidence in quoted values on material datasheets. Improved linking to reference data modules (metals, polymers and medical) improves accessibility and integration of data System requirements This release of MaterialUniverse (including the Standard, Medical, and Polymer Editions) is compatible with GRANTA MI Version 8. See the documentation associated with the MI Version 8 release for detailed system requirements, and instructions for installing the database. Upgrading from earlier releases We recommend that, where possible, existing Granta reference databases should be replaced with the latest edition to ensure they are compatible with the MI Version 8 software as well as to take advantage of content updates. Changes were made to the way FEA exporters work at GRANTA MI Version 7, and all Granta reference databases published since then including MaterialUniverse have been modified so 2014 Granta Design Ltd 5

6 that they work with the newer exporters. This means that any text exporters written or modified for use with earlier Granta software or database releases (MI Version 6 or older) should be tested to ensure they do not require any adjustment to work with the MI Version 8 data modules.
