NJCCCS: STANDARD 4.2 (GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT) ALL STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP SPATIAL SENSE AND THE ABILITY TO USE GEOMETRIC PROPERTIES, RELATIONSHIPS, AND MEASUREMENT TO MODEL, DESCRIBE AND ANALYZE PHENOMENA. Strand A Geometric Properties A.1. Identify and describe spatial relationships of two or more objects in space. Direction, orientation, and perspectives (e.g., which object is on your left when you are standing here?) Relative shapes and sizes Students predict an object from the shape or a given cutout Explore 3D shapes and create charts that describe the attributes of 3D shapes. Sort these based on specific attributes. Record data about prisms in a table. Explore and describe properties of pyramids. Compare and contrast prisms and pyramids and record data in a table. s Use of Manipulatives Concrete Models Peer Groups Extended Time Hands on Activities Infuse Technology Make connections among vocabulary and concrete and use visuals to represent math vocabulary. Students compare sequence of objects from different point of view
4.2.3 A.2. Use properties of standard three-dimensional and two-dimensional shapes to identify, classify, and describe them. Vertex, edge, face, side, angle 3D figures cube, rectangular prism, sphere, cone, cylinder, and pyramid 2D figures square, rectangle, circle, triangle, pentagon, hexagon, octagon Identify, describe, classify and construct 2D and 3D figures to demonstrate understanding of properties of two and three dimensional shapes Develop spatial visualization skills Explore and describe properties of prisms. Identify faces, edges, and vertices of prisms. Review pre-requisite concepts Vocabulary card with illustrations. Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students create a polygon museum Summative assessments A.3. Identify and describe relationships among two-dimensional shapes. Same size, same shape Lines of symmetry Construct shapes, compare to determine if they are congruent and find lines of symmetry Review pre-requisite concepts Vocabulary card with illustrations. Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students create a book of pictures that show lines of symmetry. Summative assessments
4.2.3 A.4. Understand and apply concepts involving lines, angles, and circles. Line, line segment, endpoint A.5. Recognize, describe, extend, and create space-filling patterns. Identify, draw, and label lines, line segments and endpoints and describe characteristics of each. Connect points to other points, and construct geometric shapes to demonstrate understanding of lines, line segments and endpoints. Construct models of 3D shapes, predict how many cm cubes are needed to fill the shape and then fill the shape. Define and show vertex, edge, face Review pre-requisite concepts Vocabulary card with illustrations. Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Student draw line segments to produce a curve pattern (optical illusions) Review pre-requisite concepts Vocabulary card with illustrations. Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students use models to create empty 3D shapes and then predict how many cubes are needed to fill the objects. Students test their prediction Summative assessments Summative assessments evel.php?gradelevelid=4
Strand B Transforming Shapes B. 1Describe and use geometric transformations (slide, flip, turn). Identify and model physical motions in precise ways as a series of slides, flips and turns Develop spatial visualization skills Explore slides, flips and turns with shapes and identify examples of each Identify and match congruent shapes Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students draw the shape in a new position and write a description of how the shape changed.
4.2.3 B. 2. Investigate the occurrence of geometry in nature and art. Understand that shapes can be moved in space without losing geometric properties Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students compare sequence of objects from different points of view
Strand C Coordinate Geometry C. 1.Locate and name points in the first quadrant on a coordinate grid. Understand numbers on a number line so that they can use a grid to locate and name points. Connect points on a grid to form pictures Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students construct and create pictures using coordinate points
Strand D Units of Measurement D.1.Understand that everyday objects have a variety of attributes, each of which can be measured in many ways. Use the appropriate measurement tools to find and measure everyday objects around the school Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students engage in an estimation scavenger hunt
4.2.3 D. 2.Select and use appropriate standard units of measure and measurement tools to solve real-life problems. Length fractions of an inch (1/4, 1/2), mile, decimeter, kilometer Area square inch, square centimeter Weight ounce Capacity fluid ounce, cup, gallon, milliliter Identify and use appropriate measuring tools to measure length and capacity for U.S customary and metric systems Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students judge, and explain why certain tool are more appropriate than other.
4.2.3 D. 3. Incorporate estimation in measurement activities (e.g., estimate before measuring). Select and use benchmarks to estimate measurements Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students estimate the number of items in a jar, then count. Student compare their estimation with the actual numbers
Strand E Measuring Geometric Objects E1. Determine the area of simple twodimensional shapes on a square grid. Measuring area by covering a flat space with square units Compare the area of two shapes by determining if they cover the same amount of flat space Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students create 2D shapes and have y partners find the area by Measuring Counting the squares Introduce formula
4.2.3 E. 2. Determine the perimeter of simple shapes by measuring all of the sides. Understand that perimeter is the distance around an object. Construct and use 2D shapes to measure the perimeter of shapes Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students calculate the perimeter of shapes in the classroom
4.2.3 E. Measuring Geometric Objects 3.Measure and compare the volume of three dimensional objects using materials such as rice Use various materials to measure and compare the volume. Visualize capacity of prisms Review pre-requisite Peer cooperation Vary presentation of Hands-on activities Use of manipulative Infuse Technology Extended time Students construct cube boxes and explore the volume of each by Predicting Filling with cm cubes and counting cubes Using formula
