1 GROUP ASSIGNMENT ENGINEERING MECHANICS (SRSD2093) Synopsis This assignment is intended to develop further understanding of the test carried out in determining the parameters of statics. The majority of problems in the assignment depict realistic situations encountered in engineering practice. Some of these problems come from actual products used in industry. It is hoped that this realism will both stimulate the student s interest in engineering mechanics and provide a means for developing the skill to reduce any such problem from its physical description to a model or symbolic representation to which the principles of mechanics may be applied. Aim The aim of this assignment is to prepare students on selected fundamental course topic, which might be appeared during the examination. The outcome is expected to nourish students with succinct knowledge of various terms related to Engineering Mechanics in real engineering work. In addition, the outcome is anticipated in assisting the colleagues comprehension suits to their mode and level of thinking and ideas. Objectives The objectives are as follows: 1. To analyse and solve problems in statics where it is deserves separate treatment in engineering education since many objects are designed with the intention that they remain in equilibrium. Learning Outcomes Upon completing this assignment students should be able to: 1. Analyse and solve Force Vector; To show how to add forces and resolve them into components using the Parallelogram Law, to express force and position in Cartesian vector form and explain how to determine the vector s magnitude and direction. 2. Analyse and solve Equation of Particle; To introduce the concept of the free-body diagram for a particle, to show how to solve particle equilibrium problems using the equations of equilibrium. 3. Analyse and solve Equation of Rigid Body; To develop the equations of equilibrium for a rigid body, to introduce the concept of the free-body diagram for a rigid body, to show how to solve rigid-body equilibrium problems using the equations of equilibrium.

2 4. Analyse and solve Structural Analysis; To show how to determine the forces in the members of a truss using the method of joints and the method of sections, to analyze the forces acting on the members of frames and machines composed of pin-connected members. 5. To demonstrate the implementation of generic skills such as team-working, life-long learning, communication and problem solving skill by documenting problem solutions in coherent and legible engineering calculations. Generic Skill Evaluated 1. Team working 2. Problem-Solving Assessment criteria are as follows: Correct answer of calculation 3% Clarity and response to topics 1% Teamwork and effort 1% TOTAL 5.0% Duration 1 week. Submission date is on 18 th March 2016 at Room before 5:00pm
