What is this course about? 1.1 Course description This is an advanced course in three-dimensional animation and character development that builds on knowledge, skills and understandings developed in DES321 3D Design A. The course explores the relationships between 3D portrayals of anatomy, motion, weight and timing with special emphasis given to techniques relating to animation, surfaces and textures suitable for generating realistic 3D characters and scenery. The course emphasises the development of 3D and 2D animation for the screen. It covers the entire cycle of pre-production/visualisation, production and post-production. 1.2 Course content Key content includes: Introduction to 3D modelling for the screen. On completion of this component, you will: Demonstrate an advanced level capability on 2D and 3D animation software. Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the history and context of contemporary 2D and 3D animation with associated aspects such as scripting and storyboarding. Utilise basic animation concepts including frame by frame, key framing, morphing and path animation. Create, combine and manipulate 2D and 3D objects such as primitives, lights and cameras to develop complex models and complex sceneries. Be able to work with audio recording software to add various sounds to your animations. Introduction to project planning and documentation. On completion of this component, you will: Understand the development of a film/animation script plus the creation of a storyboard. Use of character sheets for character development. Develop an items list plus time schedule for the projects and demonstrate an understanding of time constrains and deadline. Focus on quality and defining quality of a project.

Blackboard Blackboard Blackboard Assessment Task 1: Mechanical machine animation: Design plan Goal: Product: Format: To create a plan for your fantastic machine. Mechanical plan and kinematic diagram To plan your fantastic machine and outline the mechanism of all parts and devices that transform input forces and movement into a desired set of output forces and movements. Your machine should consist of moving components that can include: Gears and gear trains Belt and chain drives Cam and followers Linkage Friction devices, such as brakes and clutches Structural components such as a frame, fasteners, bearings, springs, lubricants Various machine elements, such as splines, pins, and keys You will draw a kinematic diagram that illustrates the connectivity of links and joints of a mechanism or machine rather than the dimensions or shape of the parts. The links should be presented as geometric objects, such as lines, triangles or squares, that support schematic versions of the joints of the mechanism or machine. 4 Page 4 Generic skill assessed Applying technologies Information literacy Skill assessment level Assessment Task 2: Mechanical machine animation: Animated storyboard with audio for major project Goal: Product: Format: Criteria The goal is to create a 1 minute animated storyboard with audio as part of the preproduction cycle for the animated mechanical machine. Animated Storyboard with Audio for Major Project. This task is part of your major animation project. You will create a one-minute animation that visualises the workings of your fantastic machine in action. Your short piece of animation should be informed by theory requiring you to conduct independent research. You can choose the form and style of the animation. An animation script and an animated storyboard (with sound and scene transitions) must be produced as part of the production process. Note: For more technical details on this project please refer to the black board course website Animated Storyboard: The storyboard outlines the animation in detail The animation of the storyboard is fluent The audio supports the story The timing of the storyboard is accurate Editing and montage supports and creates meaning of your animation towards visualisation Visualisation concepts are applied to great effect Documentation: The pre-production and production stages of the script and animated storyboard are documented The script is detailed and supports the animated storyboard Accurate explanation of the use of your visualisation strategies Inspirational sources included in your documentation Difficulties and solutions discussed Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Information literacy Assessment Task 3: Mechanical machine animation: The fantastic machine Goal: Product: Format: The goal is to plan and create a one-minute animation that visualises the mechanics and movements of a complex machine. Mechanical Machine Animation: The fantastic machine You will make a one-minute animation that visualises the components of a fantastic mechanical machine. You will show how the components of the machine work together. You can choose from a list of machines provided by your tutor or create your own

5 Page 5 fantastic machine inspired by nouveau art, steampunk or science-fiction. You will work from 2D blueprints or 2D sketches and you will storyboard your animation before you start modelling. Your machine must be accurate, proportionate and all movable parts must be rigged and animated. Your animation must display how all components fit together to assemble the entire machine. You must create or source sound effects that fit to the machine s movements. A particular focus on materials, textures and the final render process is recommended. All steps including research, ideas development, sketching, storyboard and production should be documented in your documentation. Criteria Note: For more technical details on this project please refer to the Blackboard course website The Fantastic Machine: Parts of the machine modelled accurately and proportionately correct Machine is complete with all parts Machine is completely rigged and all movable parts are animated Duration of the animation is one minute The animation is rendered with lights and shadows Sound has been incorporated to support realism of the visualisation Documentation: Pre-production and production stages of the modelling process and animation are documented including sketches/drawings and storyboard. The storyboard is detailed and supports the development of the animation. Inspirational sources included in your documentation. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Applying technologies Problem solving 5.3 Additional assessment requirements Plagiarism In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks, when submitted to Blackboard, are electronically checked through SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day

6 Page 6 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
