Problem Statement: Excel Tutorial (1) Create an Excel spread sheet that can calculate the flow area A, wetted perimeter P, hydraulic radius R, top water surface width B, and hydraulic depth D for the following channel cross sections: a. Rectangular (bottom width = b ) b. Trapezoidal (bottom width = b, side slope = t:1) c. Triangular (side slope = t:1) d. Partially full circular (diameter = D) Make your spread sheet dynamic as much as you can. You can follow the instructions in the tutorial files to get familiar with the Microsoft Excel interface. How to solve the problem using Excel: 1. First, to open Excel, select it from the All Programs list
2. When you open Excel, the program window will look like this: Excel Toolbars Current Working Cell Cell (B3) Formula Bar Spread Sheet Number The program consists of several cells inside which you can store information like numbers, text, or formulas that excel will calculate and display its result. Each cell has a unique name which is identified by the column and row number (e.g. cell B3 refers to the cell at column B and row 3). If you need to enter information in cell B3, first you select the cell using the mouse, and then you click on the Formula Bar to write. You can perform many editing tasks in Excel using the Excel toolbars buttons. You may need the following buttons: Create a new file Open an existing file Save current file Print Copy Modify font name, size, and type Paste Chart Wizard - 2 -
3. In order to calculate the flow area for a trapezoidal section, we need to know the bed width (b), the side slope (t), and the water depth (y). So first, we will enter this information in three separate cells as shown in the figure below. We can enter text information beside each number to make the spread sheet easily used in the future. Text information Cells containing the required information (C3, C4, C5) We need to calculate the flow area here in cell C7 Text information We have entered the bed width value in cell C3, the side slope in cell C4, and the water depth in cell C5. The above values are just numbers and not formulas. In cell C7, we need to enter a formula for Excel to calculate the flow area using information stored in cells C3, C4, and C5. To enter the formula, first select the cell C7 and click on the formula bar (or you can double click on the cell itself to start entering data). Notes: - You must start a formula using the = sign - The multiplication operator * can be written using SHIFT button The exponent operator ^ can be written using SHIFT button When you refer to a cell name inside the formula, excel will change the font color and will highlight that cell with the same color. When you press enter, the result will b displayed automatically in cell C7. If you change the values of b, t, or y in the above cells, Excel will recalculate the area instantaneously
4. Now we can do the same to calculate the wetted perimeter P and top width B. 5. To calculate the hydraulic radius R, we may enter the complete formula in Excel as a function of b, y, and t or we may use the already calculated values of A and P. In the second case, excel will calculate the flow area A and the wetted perimeter P first before it calculates the hydraulic radius R
6. The final sheet may look like this: 7. You can make similar sheets for other cross section shapes. In case of the semicircular cross section, the trigonometric functions for the angle 2θ are implemented in Excel in radians, so don t forget to supply the angle inside the sin function in radians as follows: - 5 -
