1 Creative Coding through Games and Apps Unit 3 - Shifting into Gear Instructional Day: Unit 3, Lesson 5 Topic Description In this lesson, students continue learning about objects, functions, and variables in a tutorial, and then they create a storyboard for a game. Objectives Students will be able to: Understand objects, functions, and variables in games Analyze the game sequence Create a storyboard Materials and Preparation Required Chase and Gather Tutorial: Chase and Gather Tutorial Exercise: U3.05_Tutorial_Ex Creating a Storyboard: U3.05_Activity Pixar Storyboarding Mini Doc: Note: This video is also on the special edition disc 2 of A Bug s Life should the YouTube video become unavailable. Outline of the Lesson Review user input (5 min) Chase and Gather Tutorial (20 min) Understand storyboarding (8 min) Create a storyboard (12 min) Student Activities Brainstorm input for chase-and-gather-type games Complete Chase and Gather Tutorial Create a storyboard Teaching/Learning Strategies Review user input (5 min) Ask students, Where in a chase-and-gather game could user input be U3.05_Lesson page 1

2 used? Add ideas to the chart of ideas (originally created in Unit 2, Lesson 6) and label them as game uses for user input. Chase and Gather Tutorial (20 min) Distribute Chase and Gather Tutorial Exercise (U3.05_Tutorial_Ex). Students complete Chase and Gather Tutorial ( o Students can work on the exercise simultaneously with the tutorial or after completing the tutorial. They should switch with an elbow partner, examine the markings in the code sample, and note any disagreements with a question mark next to the markings. After students have had a chance to analyze the code, they should discuss any disagreements with their partners. Any partners that cannot agree on an answer should check with the teacher. Understand storyboarding (10 min) Ask students to brainstorm a description of a storyboard. List their ideas on the board. Explain that storyboarding is like creating a plan, similar to what a builder does in creating a blueprint before build a house. Explain that many jobs (including game development and filmmaking) require storyboarding for organizing ideas. Often a storyboard is created by a team of designers each bringing their own creativity and expertise to the project design. Show the video showing how Pixar creates storyboards for a movie: Pixar Storyboarding Mini Doc ( Create a storyboard (15 min) Distribute Creating a Storyboard (U3.05_Activity). Students can use Chase and Gather Tutorial or Chase and Gather Tutorial Exercise for reference while completing the storyboard portion of the activity. Additional Resources Refer students to the Coding in TouchDevelop video as needed ( U3.05_Lesson page 2

3 Extensions Invite students to customize the Chase and Gather program. Students can add or change the obstacles or targets. Experiment with changing x or y random range limits. Describe the results and write a rule or guideline to follow to avoid undesirable results. Tips When teaching storyboarding, emphasize that this is an essential part of many jobs and that planning is essential to producing a good endproduct. Pixar spends almost an equal amount of time on storyboarding and planning as they do on creating an animation. Ask students to share other examples of careers that require extensive planning before implementing a project or producing a product. Formatted Table U3.05_Lesson page 3
