1 The 35mm Camera Lesson Plan 1. Course Title: Communication Technology 2. Teacher: Ms. Stephanie Fagg 3. Grade Level: 9th 4. Lesson Title: The 35mm Camera 5. Lesson Length: 90 minutes 6. Lesson Date: Tuesday, April 12 th State Standards of Learning (SOL): Identify state (and/or local) standards of learning (e.g., math, science, and social studies) that are relevant to this lesson/activity. a. DTE Utilize the camera systems, controls and speeds to properly expose an image. b. DTE Identify camera types and parts of the camera. 8. Standards for Technological Literacy (SfTL): Identify standards from the SfTL that are relevant to this lesson/activity. a. Standard 12: Students will develop abilities to use and maintain technological products and systems. 9. Behavioral Objectives: a. At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to: Identify the parts of a 35mm camera with 100% accuracy, Differentiate the two aspects of a 35mm camera that control light with 100% accuracy. 10. Course Outline I. 35mm Camera Parts A. Camera Body B. Lens C. Viewfinder D. Film Advance E. Shutter release F. Self-Timer G. Film Rewind H. Flash Shoe The Camera Think of a camera as a light tight box with a hole in it.

2 B. This hole controls how much light enters and for a specific amount of time C. The light is organized, or focused by the lens II. The Lens A. Gathers light reflected from a scene B. Focuses the light 1. Actually varying the distance between the lens and the film C. Delivers to the surface of the film III. Control of LightTwo aspects that control light: shutter speed and aperture. 1. Shutter Speed 2. Aperture a) Controls HOW LONG the shutter is opened b) Longer shutter = more light c) Shorter shutter = less light a) Controls the SIZE of the shutter b) Like a pupil: closes to restrict light, opens to allow light c) Aperture = f-stop (1) Smaller f-stop = bigger number (2) Larger f-stop = smaller number B. Exposure is the measuring and balancing of light. C. Too much light and the picture will be washed out. Not enough light and the picture will be too dark. A good photograph depends on calculating the exposure settings that will give the film the "right" amount of exposure. D. The photographer can balance the amount of light that reaches the film by adjusting the camera s aperture, shutter speed, or film speed. IV. Taking a Picture A. Series of EventsThe lens aperture closes down to the f-stop you've selected. 2. The mirror swings up out of the way so that the light can reach the film, temporarily blocking your view. 3. The shutter opens for the amount of time you've selected, and the film is exposed. 4. The mirror swings back down, allowing you to see through the viewfinder again. 5. Your lens aperture returns to wide open. You're ready to focus for your next shot. 2 V. Review A. Worksheets 1. Camera Parts 2. Shutter and Aperture Speed 2

3 3 II. Procedures: Describe the various stages of your lesson (Set-Induction, Body, and Conclusion), and identify explicitly what you plan to address in each part of this lesson. Time Procedure 3:00 Set-Induction 1:00 10:00 3:00 3:00 10:00 6:00 2:00 Grab attention: Ask how many students have a 35mm camera? How many students have used a 35mm camera? How many students have manually set a 35mm camera (didn t use automatic setting to take a picture)? State objectives/ overview of lesson Body of the lesson Camera = technology tool Camera Parts: describe camera parts while groups of students identify the parts on the 35mm camera. Have students gain confidence holding the camera properly. Describe how camera works Describe how lens works Show VIDEO Control of Light: Aperture and Shutter Speed Stages of Taking a Picture Conclusion 20:00 Worksheet: Camera Parts 6:00 Go over worksheet 20:00 Worksheet: Aperture and Shutter Speed 6:00 Go over worksheet Total time: 90 minutes 11. Evaluation: Sample test questions: 1. Which of the following will cause the photograph to be overexposed? a. Too much light b. Not enough light c. No light at all d. None of the above Answer: (a) Too much light will cause the photograph to be overexposed 3

4 4 2. The photographer can balance the amount of light that reaches the film by adjusting, and. Answer: Film Speed, Aperture, and Shutter Speed 3. Circle the correct answer: Which of the following allows the least amount of light into the camera? a. F/ 1.4 f/4 f/11 b. 1/30 1/125 1/ Instructional Aids or Resources: List all of the materials, handouts, etc. that you need to bring to class in order to effectively deliver this lesson. a. Power Point Presentation b. Shutter Speed and Aperture Handout c. Camera Parts Worksheet d. Video: Camera Parts 13. Safety Guidelines: a. Handling the camera with care. b. Classroom rules and safety 14. Interdisciplinary Connections: a. Learning to use a 35mm camera can open up opportunities in numerous fields, such as photojournalism or criminal justice. b. The concept of aperture and shutter speed is directly related to the human eye. 15. Technology and Culture: a. Cameras are the same anywhere you go, just different technology and uses. b. Show how photography promotes communication and interaction. 16. Diversity: a. Various instructional strategies and materials will be used throughout this unit. Power point presentations, handouts, worksheets, numerous visual examples, and group work will be used in this lesson. 17.
