Working Outside the Lab Step 1. Connect to the correct WiFi network In order to work on campus your computer must be connected to a secure network. (not the UARK guest Wi-Fi) Step 2. Use ssh to access turing 2.1 For Window users The simplest way to access Turing on a windows machine is by using a secure shell client program. There are many options, but we recommend a free program called PuTTY. the latest version can be found here ( After running the installer launch PuTTY. Enter username@turing.csce.uark.edu into the host name box (replace username with your uark/gacl username). The port box should contain 22. Click the open button at the bottom of the window. The first time you connect to Turing this will show a message asking if you if you accept the school's certificate or something, type yes. Then you will be prompted to enter your password, enter your uark password. 2.2 For Mac users The simplest way to access Turing on a Mac is to use the ssh terminal command. The first step is to open terminal. Use Finder to search applications and you should find terminal. once terminal is open type username@turing.csce.uark.edu (replace username with your uark/gacl username), then hit enter. The first time you connect to Turing this will show a message asking if you accept the school's certificate or something, type yes. Then you will be prompted to enter your password, enter your uark password. 2.3 For Linux users The simplest way to access Turing on Linux is to call ssh from the command prompt. At the command line, type username@turing.csce.uark.edu (replace username with your uark/gacl username), then hit enter. The first time you connect to Turing this will show a message asking if you accept the school's certificate or something, type yes. Then you will be prompted to enter your password, enter your uark password. Step 3. Create and edit files using nano Using nano from home is the same as using it on the lab computers. Simply type "nano filename.extension" to open a file for editing.
Step 4. Moving files on and off Turing You can just copy paste from your nano window into Notepad++ (Windows) or Textedit (Mac), but will become tedious and prone to errors as your code grows. One solution is to move the files instead of the text in the files. FileZilla provides a drag and drop interface for moving files. Download Filezilla from and install it on your local machine. After opening Filezilla, you will need to connect to Turing to access your files. Near the top of the window you should see a box labeled host. Type "sftp://turing.csce.uark.edu" (ignore the quotes) into that box. Then enter your Uark username and password. Add 22 as the port and press "Quickconnect". The list of files on the left side of the window are the files on your local machine. After connecting to Turing, you should see your files from Turing on the right side. (when using Filezilla on the lab computers Filezilla will default to someone else's user folder so you will need to navigate to your file) 4.1 For Windows and Linux users When using Filezilla on a Windows/Linux machine, files can be dragged and dropped on and off Turing. When a file is dragged from Turing, the file is copied to the windows/linux machine and vice versa. 4.2 For Mac users When using Filezilla on a Mac, files can be dragged and dropped onto Turing just like on Windows. However to get files off Turing, you can only drag and drop files to the local file Explorer in the Filezilla window An example workflow for doing homework (basic) 1. access Turing via ssh 2. navigate to the directory you want to work in using cd 3. create/edit a file using nano (e.g., nano hw1.cpp)
4. compile the file on Turing using g++ (e.g., g++ -Wall hw1.cpp o hw1 5. run the executable on Turing (e.g.,./hw1) 6. repeat steps 3-5 until the project is complete 7. move the ".cpp" file to your local machine using Filezilla 8. upload the ".cpp" file to Blackboard along with your report 5. Editing Turing files on your local machine (only attempt this AFTER you have the other methods working and have time to explore other options) Before too long, many students get tired of the limitations of nano. One of the options when right clicking a file in Filezilla is "Edit". Selecting this option will open a temporary copy of the file on your machine in an editor of your choice. When you make edits this way, any changes are saved locally (i.e., they don t affect the original file on turing. To cause the edits to be reflected on turing this, select the Filezilla window and you should receive a notification to upload the most recent save to Turing. To ensure that files are edited using an appropriate program, it is a good idea to make one of the editors recommended in section 6 the default editor. For Windows users 1. select settings under the edit tab of the Filezilla window 3. select "Use custom editor:" For Mac users is selected 1. select preferences under the Filezilla tab while the Filezilla window
3. select "Use custom editor:" For Linux users 1. select settings under the edit tab of the Filezilla window 3. select "Use custom editor:" 5.1. An example workflow for doing homework (advanced) 1. access Turing via terminal 2. navigate to the directory you want to work in using cd 3. create a file using the touch command ex: touch filename.cpp 4. open Turing on Filezilla 5. navigate to the directory your working in on Filezilla 6. right click and select edit on the file your working on. 7. make changes to the file in the editor 8. save the changes in the editor
9. select the Filezilla window and click yes on the "File has changed" notification to upload the changes to Turing 10. compile the file on Turing 11. run the ".exe" on Turing 12. repeat steps 7-11 until the project is complete 13. move the ".cpp" file to your local machine using Filezilla 14. upload the ".cpp" file to blackboard along with your report. Some recommended editors Notepad++ (Windows only) TextEdit (Macintosh) Atom (Mac) Gedit (Window/Mac) Sublime (Windows/Mac/Linux) Vim (Linux)
