1 How to Update your Oxford University MATLAB TAH Individual License The current MATLAB TAH Campus license expires at the end of August To continue using MATLAB, the license on your computer needs to be updated. Login Name The Login Name is the name you use to login into your computer. The license is locked to this name. So it is important that you select your normal login username and not your administrator name. To see your Login Name, login as normal and enter :- Operating system Command Where to use the command Windows! echo %username% In MATLAB echo %username% In a cmd prompt MAC Linux! whoami In MATLAB whoami The names must be a case sensitive match. In a terminal window For a normal update, see page 2. If the license has already expired, see page 3. If you do not have an internet connection, see page 5. 1

2 To Update the License. Before attempting an update :- Make sure that you are connected to the internet. MATLAB will need to communicate with MathWorks. Run MATLAB Click on the HOME tab at the upper left of the Matlab window. Under the RESOURCES section of the HOME banner, Click on the arrow under Help Licensing Activate Software Goto Page 4 2

3 If the license expires, you need to reactivate the license. The Activation program should automatically start when you run MATLAB. An alternative to the procedure on page one, is to run the activation program yourself. Windows All Programs MATLAB 2018a (or older versions could be MATLAB ) R2018a ( or older versions) Activate R2018a Linux Assuming that you installed R2018a to the default location. Open a terminal window, cd /usr/local/matlab/r2018/bin Run the activation program./activate_matlab.sh MAC In Finder, go to Applications, right click on the MATLAB application, select Show Package Contents Double click on Activate Goto page 4. 3

4 Activating MATLAB At some point you may be asked to provide your Oxford University Single Sign On username and password. 1. MathWorks Software Activation Window Select Activate automatically using Internet Click on Next 2. Log in Window Enter your Address and the Password for your MathWorks account Click on Next If you cannot remember your password, click on Forgot your Password and MathWorks will you an new password. 3. License Selector Window Select License , with the Label Individual Click on Next 4. Licensed End User Window Make sure the Login Names is correct. Click on Next 5. Confirmation Window Click on Confirm 6. Activation Complete Window Click on Finish If you still have problems, try the procedure on the next page. Windows After reactivation, the location of the license file changes. This may mean that MATLAB will still be able to see the old license file and still report that it is going to expire. If this is the case, you can check the expiry date in the license file. See page 7. 4

5 Activation on the web This procedure is an alternative way of activating MATLAB. One of the advantages of this method is that it can be used to update the MATLAB license without the computer directly connecting to the MathWorks web site. If you are activating MATLAB on a computer without an internet connection, you will need to follow the instructions below on a computer with an internet connection, and then transfer the license file across to the computer without an internet connection. On any computer 1. Log onto your MathWorks account You should be on your MathWorks Account page. You can get to your account page by Click on your name in the top right hand corner and selecting My Account. 3. Under My Software, click on label Individual. 4. Click on the Install and Activate tab. If you have several activations, see page 5 of :- To find your current host ID. 5. On your activation line, to the far right, Click on the down arrow to download the license file. Click on the envelope to to license file to yourself. 6. Your Release should be displayed. Make sure that the release matches the release you have installed. Change the release if required. Click on continue. 9. Select Download License File or License File Save the license.lic file onto your system. Then click on Done. 5

6 Manual Activation You will need your license file. If you don't have it, download it from the MathWorks web site by following the procedure on the previous page. Then do the following :- 1. Login in as administrator or equivalent. You need to be able to write a file into the MATLAB installation directory. 2. Run the MATLAB Activation Program. Windows All Programs MATLAB R2018a (or older versions could be MATLAB ) R2018a ( or older versions) Activate R2018a Linux Assuming that you installed R2018a to the default location. Open a terminal window, cd /usr/local/matlab/r2018a/bin Run the activation program./activate_matlab.sh MAC In Finder, go to Applications, right click MATLAB, select Show Package Contents Double click on Activate 3. Select "Activate manually without the Internet". Click on NEXT 4. In the next window, select "Enter the path to the license file" Select "Browse" and select the file "license.lic" that you downloaded. 5. Continue until the end of the program. 6

7 The License File You can find out the type of license you are using and the expiry date by inspecting your license file. Windows After reactivation, the location of the license file changes. So if the file in C:\Users\%USERNAME%\MATLAB\R2018a_licences is out of date, check for new files in C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2018a\licenses. Default locations for release R2018a C:\Users\%USERNAME%\MATLAB\R2018a_licences Where %USERNAME% gives you your username. Windows OR C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2018a\licenses Use WordPad to open the file. ~/.matlab/r2018a_licenses Linux You should find a.lic license file in this directory. Use gedit or cat to view the file. In Finder, go to your Home folder. This is the house with your name next to it Right click in the white background of your Home folder and select Show View Options. MAC Select the tick box for Show Library Folder. The license file is in Library/Application Support /MathWorks/MATLAB/R2018a_licenses You should find a.lic license file in this directory. Use TextEdit or cat to view the file. There will be an INCREMENT line for each product, with the expiry date. If you see something like INCREMENT MATLAB MLM aug-2018 Your license needs updating. 7
