How to protect users data upon system failure? By William Ng Senior IT Specialist
Agenda The challenge of Information Management in today s environment The trend of information recovery The new hybrid from IBM
Data growth is increasing Facts Companies would like to improve backup/recovery time but few have formal policy and strategy 70% of corporate data resides on desktops/laptops and fewer than 8% are backed-up. IDC & Gartner studies 30% of small businesses admit to having no formal data protection procedure. Imation April % of small businesses rank automated data backup and recovery as their primary IT need. ECT News Network Declining disk cost creates new approach Disk costs declining making replication technologies more cost effective Replication and backup will increasingly overlap Loss of productivity due to data loss on desktops/endpoints is concern Continuous Data Protection is the next evolution of backup Corporate data centers reluctant to take on laptop management Many data protection solutions miss the most valuable data (what the user is working on now)
Why is Continuous Data Protection for Files are Needed? 1. Increases in data volumes increase length of backup window Recovery from a disk image Recovery from tape copy 2. Business and regulatory requirements for data continuity are increasing 3. Disk costs declining making replication technologies more cost effective Cost 4. Critical data assets found in remote offices, laptops, desktops often not protected 5. Employee productivity declines with difficult recovery of data, recreation of lost assets Recovery Time Objective IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files delivers faster recovery of file
What is IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for File? An evolution in data protection using a unique hybrid approach Replication + Traditional Backup = CDP Real-time true CDP Optional scheduled protection Tolerant of transient networks Versioning of files Point-in-time restore Archive retention WORM Disk Scalable Transparent Small foot print Single endpoint No server component required Multiple targets, flexible backend Maintain Native file format Open architecture 10 patents filed
CDP According to SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association) "Continuous Data Protection (CDP) represents a major breakthrough in data protection. Historically, data protection solutions have focused on the periodic backup of data. Complex issues like backup windows, protection of open files and databases, and heavy impact to production systems during the backup operation have all arisen from this scheduled backup paradigm. Today, CDP dramatically changes the data protection focus from backup to recovery. With CDP continuously safeguarding all changes to your important data, the IT administrator need never think about backup again it just works. And when disaster strikes, CDP-based solutions offer the utmost in flexibility and performance by allowing for the rapid recovery to any desired point in the past. CDP offers more flexible Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and faster Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) than traditional data protection solutions, which were designed to create, manage and store single-point-in-time (SPIT) copies of data. CDP, on the other hand, captures and protects all data changes, not just at select, pre-determined points. This provides access to data at any point in time (APIT), thereby reducing data loss and eliminating costly downtime. Data retrieval is reliable, fast, and granular." CDP Buyer s Guide First printing June 2005 PUBLISHED BY The Storage Networking Industry Association SNIA DMF CDP Special Interest Group 500 Sansome Street, Suite #504 San Francisco, CA 94111
CDP According to the Analysts The idea of CDP is something that captures data in real-time or close to real time and provides an extremely fine level of granularity when it comes to restores. It s also transparent from an application and server standpoint. You don t have to initiate anything like a backup operation. - Jim Damoulakis, CTO GlassHouse Technologies Inc. The storage software industry is dominated by two primary markets: backup and replication. Both of these markets are designed to address the problems and issues of recovery, but there is no recovery market today. Over time, the functions of these two markets will increasingly overlap as there is a very symbiotic relationship between replication and backup. Backup is often accomplished off of the copy from replication to reduce the downtime window. - Carolyn DiCenzo, Gartner, Storage Software Market and Trends. The Backup/Recovery market is rapidly moving toward all disk-based. Cost and deployment complexity are the primary concerns for SMB and lower and an on-line disk-based model is easily embraced. Innovative solutions have a distinct opportunity to unseat the historical incumbents. - John Webster, Sr. Analyst, Data Mobility Dec. 2004

IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Value Proposition Reduced or eliminate backup window Improve backup resource utilization Better ROI & TCO Improved Recovery Point Objective (RPO) Reduce loss of data Improved productivity Improved Recovery Time Objective (RTO) User initiated restore, zero administration intervention Optional recovery from disk (local or remote)
CDP for Files Delivers Service Continuity No Backup Window deliver service and availability levels with a minimal to zero backup window Easier than snapshot with more data recovery options with CDP for Files there is no need to understand more IT-savvy concepts such as "snapshots" and how maintain, configure, and age such elements. Simple Skilled storage administrators are difficult to find and/or retain. Continuous Protection for critical data Employee productivity suffers due to human errors causing data loss and lost time recreating data Intelligent remote office backup and connection Customers are considering a backup solution for remote offices: IBM's CDP is ideal for remote office servers as it will locally version and protect high-importance files and migrates data back to corporate servers tolerating network spottiness. Easily Protect Data on Mobile Assets The organization is considering how to easily protect information assets found on individual desktops, laptops with minimum administration Secure data vaulting The organization needs to protect critical files from alteration or deletion, viruses and corruptions. IBM's CDP solution allows users set protections for critical corporate assets to prevent deletion or alteration of active files from end-user error, virus or corruption.
User s Configuration High-Priority Files Specify up to three target areas for high priority files Target area(s) will capture every save of a file when it occurs. Local target area is auto-managed as a pool with a configurable size. Old versions deleted to make room for new version. Local area allows for un-tethered restore Option to specify a remote file server for off-machine protection; still real-time, but tolerant of being disconnected. Option to specify a TSM server for off-machine protection; still real-time, but tolerant of being disconnected. All other files All other files are protected on a periodic basis to the remote file server or TSM server. Change-journal eliminates ever having to scan the file system. Files versioned on remote file server allowing for point-in-time restore. Remote versions are automatically managed to a configurable pool size.
