1 Caught You on CATS Cam CATS = Children and Teachers Sharing For further information contact Jenny Clark Zolfo Springs Elem. School 3215 Schoolhouse Road Zolfo Springs, FL jclark@hardee.k12.fl.us n PROGRAM OVERVIEW Flip Video cameras are becoming powerful tools for classroom use. These easy-to-use video cameras are simple plug and play devices that can be held in one hand and operated with one finger. Each camera comes as an all in one unit that includes a built in microphone, software for movie making, and a USB plug to connect the camera to a computer. After shooting a video simply plug the camera into the computer to create terrific movies with titles and music. Our school purchased one Flip Video camera a couple of years ago. We need more cameras to catch all the great stuff happening in classrooms! We would like to purchase several Flip Video cameras with the School to School grant money. Our goal is to have one camera per grade level. We are confident that the cameras will be used on a regular basis if they are readily available for use. We began to reflect upon the various activities that the Flip Video camera had been used for in our school and the idea of CATS (Children and Teachers Sharing) was born. We have recorded students doing scientific experiments, reader s theatre, songs, morning announcements, and musical performances. Our fourth grade teachers used the Flip Video camera this year to record students performing various skits about the writing process. Those skits were then shown over our closed circuit television system prior to students taking the FCAT writing test this year. We also used the Flip Video to create a DVD of our school s Teacher of the Year nominee teaching a lesson to her students. Finally, we used the Flip video to record staff members performing a reader s theatre at Literacy Night this fall. Establishing best practices in the educational setting is essential to enhancing the learning environment and we feel that the use of Flip Video cameras will assist us in doing that. Students love the idea of seeing themselves on camera and they are highly motivated to do well on the activities because they know they are going to be videotaped. In some cases students even ask to practice and refine activities for a do over after viewing them. The DVD of the lesson being taught by our school s Teacher of the Year nominee was viewed by other staff members. Since viewing that lesson some of the teachers have incorporated the activities of that lesson into their own classroom instruction. The biggest benefit of being able to record various student and teacher activities is the fact that any of the activities can then be viewed on demand at the convenience of the viewers. n OVERALL VALUE The overall value of this program is that it allows students and teachers to easily share activities done in the classroom with others. The Flip Video is so easy to use that teachers will not be overwhelmed by implementing its use. Students are highly motivated by seeing themselves on video so they will be more actively involved in activities because they want to perform well. The fact that things can be prerecorded and then viewed on demand will be a real benefit to everyone because it will allow activities to be shared at times that are convenient for the viewers. n LESSON PLAN TITLES Reader s Theatre Writing #1 Strong Verb vs. Weak Verb Reader s Theatre Writing #2 Simile City Reader s Theatre Writing #3 META-4 News Reader s Theatre Writing #4 Detail Court Reader s Theatre Writing #5 Mission: Possible Science Experiment Mentos Diet Coke Geyser n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed with each lesson plan. Overall materials budget including pricing and vendors follows the lesson plans. n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Jenny Clark has a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and a School Library Media Certificate from the University of Washington. She obtained an Elementary Education Certificate from City University. She taught 6th grade for ten years in the state of Washington and this is her 5th year as an Elementary Librarian in the Hardee County School District at Zolfo Springs Elementary School. H H H
