1 Introduction FiberMini is a simple, yet flexible, design that allows Laser Mechanisms to optimize the processing head to the end user s Fiber Laser. The head is capable of cutting a wide range of materials and is also available in various welding configurations. FiberMini delivers both userfriendly operation and reliable performance at an attractive price. Key Features Available with and without capacitive height sensing 10 mm of lens movement to set focus Quick and easy access to the cover slide Flexible design to optimize spot size Smooth assist gas flow Compact, lightweight design Models available for most popular fiber connections. Right-angle fiber input option Camera viewing option with internal illumination This manual goes through the steps of installation, setup, operation and service of the FiberMini product line. While FiberMini is available in many configurations, this manual is generic to the core product and thus can be used for all models. Figure 1 PLMNL0211 REV. F 1 FiberMini Operation Manual
2 Installation Mechanicals 2.1 Mounting FiberMini processing heads are attached with a fixed mount plate or crash protection device (sold separately). See Appendix A. 2.2 Plumbing Water Cooling FiberMini processing heads are equipped with a water-cooling circuit. It is recommended that power levels greater than 1000 watts use water cooling. In addition, power level should never exceed 2000 watts. See Figure 3 for hose sizes and the table below for recommended flow rates. The cooling circuit is designed to be operated on either a closed-looped cooling system or facility tap water as long as the requirements in the table below are met. Figure 2 Minimum Flow Rate Inlet Pressure 1.8 liters/minute (0.48gpm) 170 to 520 kpa (30 to 60 psi) Inlet Temperature room temperature / >dew point Hardness (Equivalent to <250mg/liter CaCO 3 ) ph 6 to 8 Particulate Size <200 microns in diameter Figure 3 PLMNL0211 REV. F 2 FiberMini Operation Manual
2.2.2 Assist Gas See Figure 3 for location and hose size. Maximum pressure is 20 BAR. Impurities in the assist gas such as hydrocarbons (THC) and moisture (H 2 O) can damage optics, cause power fluctuations and result in inconsistent cuts. See the table below for recommended assist gas specifications. 2.3 Welding Cross-Flow Air Knife The air knife can be oriented +/ See Figure 4 for location and fitting size. GAS PURITY MAX H 2 O (ppm) MAX THC (ppm) Oxygen 99.8% <5 ppm <1 ppm Nitrogen % <5 ppm <1 ppm Argon % <5 ppm <1 ppm Helium % <5 ppm <1 ppm Impurities can also be picked up in the supply lines. Non-metallic materials can allow oxygen and moisture to permeate the system and can be a source of dust and hydrocarbons. Stainless steel lines and fittings are recommended. Filters that remove particles down to.01 microns and purifiers that guard against oil or water from getting into the optical system should be used. Figure 4 Regulators with a stainless steel diaphragm are recommended. Industrial regulators can aspirate air and the neoprene diaphragm can be a source of hydrocarbons. PLMNL0211 REV. F 3 FiberMini Operation Manual
2.4 Fiber Input The fiber input is the interface between the laser and the cutting head. FiberMini will adapt to most industrial fibers. It can be equipped with a Laser Mechanism s collimator or a clamp that will hold a third-party collimating assembly (see Appendix A for clarification). Common fiber connectors include QBH, QD/LLK-D and Q5/LLK-B. Other fiber connections are available, but not standard to Laser Mechanisms product line. Each fiber connector has its own unique method of securely attaching the fiber. Refer to the fiber type for specific instructions. The location of the fiber connector is illustrated in Figure 1. If the fiber comes equipped with a collimator, then the interface is a simple clamp. Clamping assemblies are available for 10mm to 44mm. Note the clear aperture of the head is 25mm. See Figure 5. Simply loosen the clamp screw and insert the collimator assembly. Be sure the fiber is fully engaged and tightened using the clamp screws. If your clamp includes a shroud, you must slide the shroud up the fiber to gain access to the clamp screws. See Figure 5. Caution: Great care must be taken to ensure the optics remain clean. Wipe any excess debris from the head before servicing. If the head is orientated with vertical beam input, the head should be rotated to prevent debris from falling onto the optics. Figure 5 PLMNL0211 REV. F 4 FiberMini Operation Manual
2.5 Fiber Orientation Adjustment Many fiber optic cables are keyed and will only fit into the Fiber Interface Adaptor (FIA) in one orientation. The FIA on the fiber mini can be rotated to match the orientation of the fiber coupler and reduce twisting of the fiber optic cable. To reorient the connector on the FiberMini Loosen the set screw on top plate by ¼ turn with a 2mm hex key wrench. Loosen the 4 clamping bolts by ¼ turn with a 3mm hex key wrench. Rotate the FIA to match the orientation of the fiber optic cable. See Figure 6. Once the fiber connector is orientated correctly tighten the 4 clamping bolts and the set screw. 2.6 Internal Illumination Internal illumination is an option on all viewing systems. A 5VDC 300mA power supply is included with the assembly. Plug it in as indicated in Figure 7. 5V Power Connector Clamping bolt (4) Set Screw Figure 7 Figure 6 PLMNL0211 REV. 11 3 Operation Mechanicals 3.1 Tip Centering There are two methods for tip centering in the FiberMini family. If your head uses a third-party collimator follow instructions 3.1.1; if your head uses a Laser Mechanisms collimator follow step Reference FiberMini Design Matrix in Appendix A for further clarification. There are a number of methods to center the beam in the Gas Jet Tip but the goal is always the same getting the laser beam in the center of the Gas Jet Tip. One method is to put a piece of translucent tape on the end of the Gas Jet Tip. Turn on the laser s internal red aiming beam and observe the position of the beam on the tape. Use the adjuster screws to center the red dot on the nozzle orifice. Next, power up the laser at a low power setting and take a low energy shot and look at the position of the hole relative to the orifice of the Gas Jet Tip. A series of adjustments and low energy shots may be needed until the beam is centered in the Gas Jet Tip. It is essential to any laser process that the beam be properly centered in the Gas Jet Tip. The following instructions describe how to adjust the beam, but the actual method to determine the beam location is up to the end user. Figure Tip Centering With Laser Mechanisms Collimator Tip centering is accomplished by adjusting the X-Y position of the collimating lenses. The adjuster screws are located at the top of the cutting head as illustrated in Figure 9. Loosen or tighten the adjuster screws with a 3mm hex wrench until beam is centered in tip Tip Centering Using A Third-Party Collimator Tip centering is accomplished by tilting the collimating assembly. The adjuster screws are located at the top of the cutting head as illustrated in Figure 8. Use a 3mm hex wrench to loosen the adjuster screw in the opposite direction you want the beam to move. Then tighten the adjuster screw that is opposite of the screw that was just loosened. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! Use the four adjusting screws until the beam is centered in the tip. Once the beam is centered, double-check to ensure that the all adjuster screws are snug finger tight (1 N m torque max.) Figure 9 PLMNL0211 REV. F 6 FiberMini Operation Manual
3.2 Setting Focus Position FiberMini is equipped with an adjustable lens holder that allows you to move the laser focal point to optimize the laser processing. The lens has a total of 10mm of movement. When used in cutting applications the approximate position of the focal point will be at the end of the tip when the Focus Dial Knob is set at 3. The scale reads in 1mm increments and is independent of the actual focus position. For example, when the Focus Dial Knob is at 5, it does not mean that focus is 5mm outside of the tip. Focus position varies on optical tolerance, mechanical tolerance and laser performance. To adjust the focus position, follow this procedure: Loosen the Lock Nut by rotating it counterclockwise. Turn the Focus Dial Knob (the larger the number on the dial the further outside the tip the focus position moves). Once the focus position is properly set, tighten the Lock Nut by rotating it clockwise. 3.3 Adjusting Viewing Systems The viewing system is usually adjusted after laser focus position is found and the head is located in the proper laser focus position above the work piece Setting Viewing Image Focus Using a 3mm hex wrench, loosen the Locking Collar. See Figure 11. Adjust the Tube by sliding it until the image becomes clear. Once the viewing image focus position is properly set, tighten the Locking Collar Adjusting Position The position of the viewing system is adjusted using the X-Y assembly on the camera mount. Using a 3mm hex wrench, loosen or tighten the Adjuster Screws until the image is centered on the screen. See Figure 11. Figure 10 Figure 11 PLMNL0211 REV. F 7 FiberMini Operation Manual
4 Service 4.1 Changing Cover Slide The cover slide can be changed while the head is mounted to the machine. Always wear powder free gloves or finger cots when handling optics. Remove the cover slide by depressing the buttons on either side of the Cover Slide Drawer. Figure 13 Install the cover slide by placing it into the Cover Slide Drawer. Press the seal ring into the drawer to retain the cover slide. Replace with a new seal ring if it appears to be damaged. Reinstall the Cover Slide Drawer into the head by depressing the buttons on either side of the unit. Figure 12 Remove the cover slide from the drawer by applying pressure with your fingers to the surface of the cover slide, opposite the seal ring. The seal ring and cover slide will pop out (save the seal ring). PLMNL0211 REV. F 8 FiberMini Operation Manual
4.2 Removing Tip Assembly If your head has a Sensing Wire, unthread it from the tip. See Figure 15. Unthread Retaining Nut and remove tip assembly. See Figure 14. Install new tip assembly by engaging boss into the head then tightening the Retaining Nut. Orient connector to desired location and reattach Sensing Wire if applicable. 4.3 Changing Focusing Lens The focusing lens can be changed while the head is mounted to the machine. Always wear powder free gloves or finger cots when handling optics. Remove Cover Slide Drawer by depressing the buttons on either side of the unit. Set the Cover Slide Drawer aside in a clean environment. If your head has a Sensing Wire, unthread it from the tip. See Figure 15. Figure 15 Using a 3mm hex wrench, unbolt the four captive screws shown in Figure 16. Place the tip assembly aside in a clean environment. Figure 14 Figure 16 PLMNL0211 REV. F 9 FiberMini Operation Manual
Using the Lens Insertion Tool, unthread the lens holder (see Figure 17). Caution: As Lens Holder is removed, be sure to keep it vertical to prevent the lens from falling out. Place the Lens Holder onto the Lens Insertion Tool and insert into the head. Hand-tighten the Lens Holder until it is snug. Be careful not to over tighten the Lens Holder as this may cause the lens to distort. Reassemble components in reverse order. Check the tip centering, laser focus and image focus and adjust as needed (see ). Figure 17 Take the Lens Holder to a clean area and invert it to remove the lens. Note the location of the seal ring. Using care, install lens and place seal ring on top as shown in Figure 18. Note the convex surface of the lens is oriented towards the top of the FiberMini. Figure 18 PLMNL0211 REV. 17 4.5 Changing Collimator Lens Assembly Changing the collimating lens assembly can be performed while the head is mounted to the machine. Before continuing, determine which style collimator your head has (see Appendix A). The simple way of determining which style collimator your head has is by looking at how the fiber is connected to the head. If the fiber is clamped to the head, as shown in Figure 5, you have a third-party collimator; any other variation is a Laser Mechanisms collimator. Refer to Appendix B for replacement part numbers. This manual only covers the servicing of a Laser Mechanisms collimator. Refer to third-party collimator s instructions for its servicing. Remove the fiber from collimating assembly (each fiber connector has a unique connection method; refer to the fiber s manual for specific instructions). Using a 2mm hex wrench, loosen or remove Set Screw. Remove Fiber Interface Assembly (FIA) by unthreading it by hand. Thread FIA (and spacer) onto new collimating assembly. Reinstall components in reverse order. Rotate the FIA to match the fiber orientation (see 2.5) Check the tip centering, laser focus and image focus and adjust as needed (see ). Caution: Remove fiber with great care. Damaging fiber end may result in fiber replacement. Store fiber in such a manner to protect the end of the fiber from being damaged. Wipe away loose debris from the area. Using a 3mm hex wrench, remove screws holding the fiber collimating assembly as shown in Figure 20. Take assembly to a clean area. Figure 21 Figure 20 PLMNL0211 REV. F 12 FiberMini Operation Manual
4.6 Replacing Gas Jet Tip Unscrew the Tip Retainer Nut. Remove the Gas Jet Tip by pulling it straight out. Insert the new Gas Jet Tip. Thread in Tip Retainer Nut. 4.7 Replacing Head Electronics Turn off power to the head. Unthread 14-pin connector on top of the electronics box and Sensing Wire on underside of electronics box (if applicable). Using 2.5mm hex wrench, remove bolts that hold the electronics box (see Figure 23). Install new electronics box. Reassemble components in reverse order. Figure 22 Figure 23 PLMNL0211 REV.
