Wide angle lens mods for Hubsan x4 h1207c with HD camera I wanted a wide angle lens for this quad, so got a D-lens (120degree) lens module for 808

However, all I got when I powered up the quad was the blue cam LED came on as normal but instead of the red LED going off after initialisation it

So I just put the original camera back in and went for the cheapo Jelly-Lens mod while I waited for another D-Lens to come from China.

1 Wide angle lens mods for Hubsan x4 h1207c with HD camera I wanted a wide angle lens for this quad, so got a D-lens (120degree) lens module for 808 Keychain Camera off ebay for about 7. I followed a video I found on youtube which shows how to do it. However, all I got when I powered up the quad was the blue cam LED came on as normal but instead of the red LED going off after initialisation it just flashed repeatedly 4 times, paused, then repeated over and over with the record button having no effect. So I just put the original camera back in and went for the cheapo Jelly-Lens mod while I waited for another D-Lens to come from China. For this you will need: Jelly Lens (obviously!) Dremel and a good cutter Masking tape Hot Glue Gun Scalpel The Jelly-Lens is really cheap but does the trick. the whole thing only adds I think around 2 to 3 grams so hardly effects the flight-time.

You can get a nice smooth flat cut off the straight edge so no need for any sanding at all.

2 Starting out with a dremel I shaved off all the unnecessary plastic off the Jelly Lens. I used a round-nosed straight tungsten cutter. You can get a nice smooth flat cut off the straight edge so no need for any sanding at all. I put a bit of masking tape over the camera lens hole on the x4 for protection against debris getting on there while I shaved the nose off the upper body. This was to give a nice flat surface for the Jelly Lens to sit against.

3 I used 2 thin strips of masking tape top and bottom to position the lens so I could see the camera hole in the centre. I got a black glue stick in my glue gun and laid 2 smallish beads of glue on the left and right sides of the join between the Jelly Lens and the body. The trick is to hold the Jelly Lens dead-centre while this sets. (The tape isn t exactly secure, it s just to help hold it while you get the first glue on there.) After it s set carefully peel off the tape and glue the remainder of the join. My glue gun was way too big for this job, so don t worry if it gets a bit messy. Once it s all good and set just trim back the glue with a scalpel until you have a neat beat all around the join like a weld. Then I painted the Jelly Lens black with some Cannondale touch-up paint which is basically black nail varnish. You can probably get an exact match for the red x4 if that s what you have. So I ran this mod for a while and quite liked the results but in some light conditions you can tell it s a cheap lens, you get a weird halo effect, also the edges are a bit blurry (see the vids on quadrewcopter youtube channel). Then my 808 D-Lens module turned up so...

I used a metal point not too sharp, you don't want to damage the threads on the lens. This picture shows the glue partially peeled off.

4 I carefully broke the Jelly Lens off and it came off clean. (I reckon I could just super-glue this straight onto another x4 with the nose shaved off.) You will need to pick the glue off that secures the lens in the body of the 808 sensor module. This is a bead that runs all the way round. I used a metal point not too sharp, you don't want to damage the threads on the lens. This picture shows the glue partially peeled off. You need to start it off (maybe help with a scalpel slit to start it off.) Once it s going you can peel it off with tweezers. In this pic you can see the glue partially peeled off.

Once the glue is off carefully unscrew the lens. Then disassemble your quad and remove the camera module. Unplug the sensor module ribbon cable from the PCB and pick the glue off that too.

Sorry I didn t take any pics of this, but the process is the same as in Once it s all back together you need to focus the lens. This is through trial and error!

(This is loads fiddlier!) Plug your lens module back in (really make sure the ribbon-cable is fully in there and the clip fully closed) and reassemble the quad. Screw the 808 lens in. Sorry I didn t take any pics of this, but the process is the same as in Once it s all back together you need to focus the lens. This is through trial and error! Just record a bit, check it, record a bit, adjust, check etc. It s a bit tedious but doesn t take too long to get right. Make sure you get test footage with some distance to it. Happy wide-angling!
