4 ecast Image Capture Instructions Digital Camera Check to ensure the camera s image resolution is set to 640x480, VGA, or 1.2 megapixels. See camera user manual for instructions. Secure camera to tripod. Secure an area that has plenty of light, no shadows, and a consistent background to take images. Proper Patient Positioning Write patient ID on white ecast measurement tapes. Instruct patient to stand up straight in their normal, even, weight-bearing stance (feet shoulder width apart). TIP: If patient has trouble standing, set up everything you can before applying tapes and taking pictures. Avoid any flexion or hyperextension of the knee. Make certain the patient remains in proper stance and is not looking down at their leg (or the knee will hyperextend and tapes won t be applied correctly). Avoid excessive internal or external rotation of feet (toes should point forward). Move shorts up so that they don t cover the tapes. Also make sure shorts on other leg don t hinder image of leg outline. Placement of ecast Measurement Tapes Mark the center of the patella by palpating the top, bottom, medial, and lateral edges. (For most individuals, mid-patella corresponds where the knee bends and this also makes an easy point of reference). First, position the lower leg tape. Keep it taut, start at the mid-patella mark and continue down the tibia in line with the center of the ankle joint. Avoid wrinkles and creases in the tape. It is okay if tape does not lay flat against the patella tendon - pull taut. Do NOT press the tape against the shin or front of leg. Next, position the upper leg tape. While holding the top of the upper leg tape in line with the head of the femur (midline of the thigh is a good approximation), carefully overlay Point A on the upper leg tape directly over Point A on the lower leg tape. (Cross-hairs indicate proper placement). The tape should bisect the thigh into equal right and left halves. 2

Position the tripod directly between those lines - THIS IS CRITICAL! The tripod should be directly in line with where the patella points.

5 Place one of the thin white tape strips horizontally at mid-patella level on the lateral side of the knee. You may also place one on the medial side. Determine height of camera by placing the camera right up to the knee and adjust tripod to the height level with the middle of the patella Take Anterior And Lateral Images Adjust the tripod so that the camera lens is exactly at knee center height - THIS IS CRITICAL! Position your hands on the patient s condyles as indicated below. (Your hands should be parallel to one another resting on the flat sides of the knee condyles and the patella should be centered between them). Imagine two parallel lines extending from your hands. Position the tripod directly between those lines - THIS IS CRITICAL! The tripod should be directly in line with where the patella points. Make sure the patient is not looking down at their leg when you take the picture or they will have hyper-extended their leg and distorted the tape. Take the anterior pictures. Use the upper and lower portions of the measurement tapes to frame the image in the LCD screen. The picture should only capture 1 above and 1 below the tape. (Pictures that capture too much of the leg can result in image distortion). This is usually about 2 feet in front of patient. 3

6 ecast Image Capture Instructions (Cont.) The width of the tapes should appear to be the same in the image. If the top tape looks thicker than the bottom tape or vice versa, the camera is angled up or down at the knee and not at the same height. Take the first anterior image as directed above. Now place the camera 3 in a arc to the right of the original position for the second anterior image. Next place the camera 3 in a arc to the left of the original position for the third anterior image. This ensures that one of the three pictures will be usable if the original angle was not lined up with the direction of the patella. Move the camera (not the patient) to take the lateral picture. Again, use the upper and lower portions of the tape to frame the image capturing 1 above and 1 below the tape. The lateral picture should be at a 90 angle to the leg so that the camera does not show too much of the back of the knee or the tapes on the front. Review the images for proper positioning, clarity and focus. NOTE: For the first few ecasts you do, you may want to take manual measurements as a back up until you become proficient. This will minimize the possibility of having to retake the pictures (see below). You are going to measure the circumference of the knee and at knee center, 5 and 7 above and below the knee center line. See arrows below for measurements when tape is still placed. If you fail to take measurements before removing the tape, ensure you mark the leg accordingly and take your measurement properly. 7 Above 5 Above Knee Center 7 Below 5 Below 4

7 Download Images From Camera to PC File Create a new file on your computer where you can easily locate and store your ecast images. (This is the location you will browse to when placing your order online). Sync the camera to your computer via the provided USB cable and prepare to transfer images. Select the desired images and download them into the folder you have designated for your ecast images. Enter Delivery/Billing Info. You may also store multiple billing and shipping address combinations by going to MY ACCOUNT and creating a new address under the billing and shipping fields by using the drop down menus. 6. Browse for the anterior and lateral photos and select the photos and click save. Photos are added one at a time. 7. Click PLACE ORDER and your order will be sent to VQ OrthoCare. You should always review your order by clicking on the ORDERS button at the top of the ecast home page. If the status of the order is anything except record added successfully you must call Customer support at or at wholesale@vqorthocare.com to make any changes to the order as it is already in process.
