Basic Functionality INTRODUCTION If you work in film then you are probably familiar with traditional director s viewfinders: They have been around for decades allowing the director and cinematographer to quickly frame shots without having to move the camera. This established tool is now taken to the next level with Cadrage Director s Viewfinder. Using the camera of your smartphone, Cadrage accurately simulates the framing of any camera and lens setup. This saves time setting up shots on set, but it is also very helpful during pre-production in regards to location scouting. Although primarily targeted at film professionals, many photographers find Cadrage to be an invaluable addition to their toolkit. THE MAIN VIEW The Live Image on top takes up most of the Main View. This is where you see the framing preview of the camera and focal length that are displayed at the bottom. You can access all the functions of Cadrage from the bottom tool bar. Tapping on the camera format will bring up the Camera Setup menu, where you can choose your camera or save and load Camera Packages. Tapping on the focal length will bring up the Lens Kit menu, where you can choose between prime and zoom lenses and select your focal lengths and lens adapter. The Arrow Buttons next to the focal length let you cycle through your prime lenses or zoom. 6

On the far left is the Menu Button that will let you access the Settings of Cadrage, activate Wide / Tele Adapters that are attached to your phone, set the Flash and switch between Photo Mode and Video Mode. The Capture Button used to take a picture or video is located on the right of the screen. Depending on the capture mode, this is either a Photo Button or a Video Recording Button. The Gallery Button will take you to Cadrage s gallery to review your photos and videos. PRIME & ZOOM LENSES LENS TYPE Cadrage lets you choose between using prime lenses or a zoom range in your setup. Changing the Lens Type is available in the Lens Kit Menu. It can be accessed by tapping on the Focal Length in the Main View. When using Prime Lenses, there are two display modes: Overview Mode displays frame guides for all focal lengths Full Screen Mode displays only one focal length at a time To switch between these two modes, tap anywhere into the Live Image. You can cycle through your lenses with the Arrow Buttons next to the focal length in the bottom bar. Taking a photo or video is possible in both modes. When using a Zoom Lens, only the Full Screen Mode is available. Changing the focal length can be done with the Arrow Buttons, as well as by using the Pinch Gesture in the Live Image. LENSES / ZOOM RANGE The second entry in the Lens Kit Menu lets you access the Prime Lens Database or the Zoom Lens Database, depending on which Lens Type is currently selected. If you don t find your desired focal length, it is very easy to create a new one by CREATING CUSTOM LENSES. You can use any number of prime lenses but you can only define one single zoom range. In case you are using multiple zoom lenses you could create a custom zoom range that includes all of your zoom lenses. LENS ADAPTERS / SPEEDBOOSTERS / EXTENDERS The last entry in the Lens Kit Menu lets you add Lens Adapters to your Kit. They include Speedboosters and 2x tele extenders that are used between the camera and the lens. Selecting the adapter will make Cadrage adjust the field of view of the Live Image accordingly. 7

SIMULATING WIDE- ANGLE LENSES Cadrage can simulate any camera and focal length combination, but the Live Image can of course only work within the scope of the field of view of your phone s camera. If you go wider than this a blue placeholder will be displayed around the camera preview to account for the missing image information, so you can still get a good estimation of the framing. Since this is a hardware limitation, the only way to expand the field of view is to attach a WIDE / TELE ADAPTERS to your phone. Wide-angle placeholder PLACEHOLDER COLOR The placeholder around the Live Image is blue by default but you can change its color easily: 1. In the Main View, tap on the Menu Button on the far left in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Settings in the pop-up menu. 3. Tap on Placeholder Color and select the desired color. ANAMORPHIC SHOOTING The use of anamorphic lenses is specified in the camera format itself since most professional cameras have dedicated anamorphic shooting modes. When using a camera format like ARRI Alexa (2.8K Anamorphic) you simply select the focal lengths of your anamorphic lens kit and you re good to go. You don t need to tell Cadrage that these lenses are anamorphic because the format already defines them as such. In case you are using anamorphic lenses with a camera that does not have a native anamorphic mode, you can edit the format: 1. Tap and hold the camera format in the Camera Database until the Edit/Delete pop-up appears, then select Edit. 2. Under Lenses used with this format, you can choose between spherical, 1.33x, 1.5x and 2x anamorphic lenses. If you switch a lot between anamorphic and spherical shooting with a camera that doesn t have its own anamorphic mode, it might make sense to create a duplicate of this format dedicated to anamorphic shooting (see CREATING CUSTOM CAMERA FORMATS). 8

CAMERA PACKAGES Save your favorite camera/lens setups by using Camera Packages. Each package includes the camera, aspect ratio, lenses and lens adapter (if selected). SAVING YOUR CURRENT SETUP 1. In the Main View tap on the current format in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Save Camera Package in the pop-up menu. LOADING A CAMERA PACKAGE 1. In the Main View tap on the current format in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Load Camera Package in the pop-up menu. To delete a Camera Package from the list, long-press the entry and tap Delete. MANUAL FOCUS & EXPOSURE Currently only available in the ios version By default, automatic focus and exposure are enabled. You can use the following gestures inside the Live Image to control focus and exposure manually: Area of Interest: Long-press to adjust focus/exposure automatically for this area. Focus: Slide up or down to shift focus. Exposure: Slide left or right to adjust exposure. Point of Interest Manual Focus Manual Exposure To return to automatic focus and exposure simply tilt or move your phone rapidly. FLASH 1. In the Main View tap on the Menu Button on the far left in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Flash in the pop-up menu. 3. Set the flash to Off, On or Auto. The flash is turned off by default. In Video Mode, the flash is not available. 9

DISPLAY OVERLAYS 1. In the Main View tap on the Menu Button on the far left in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Settings in the pop-up menu. 3. Tap on Display Overlays. Cadrage offers the following Display Overlays: Center Cross Action Safe Title Safe Grid Rule of Thirds Golden Ratio Additionally, you can change the color and line-thickness of the overlays. Please note that Display Overlays are not burned into the image when taking a photo or video. 10

Gallery THE MAIN GALLERY Cadrage s gallery is the place to view all your photos and videos, access their metadata and organize them into projects. You have various options to export images and create PDF shot lists. The following pages will go through all of these features in detail. BASICS There are two ways in which you can view your images and videos: The Gallery Overview displays multiple images/videos in a grid or list The Full Screen Gallery displays only one image/video To go from Gallery Overview to a single image or video, simply tap its thumbnail. If you want to return from the Full Screen Gallery, tap the Overview Button in the lower left. To return to the Main View and Live Image, tap the Back Button on the upper left. GRID AND LIST VIEW In the Gallery Overview, you can see multiple thumbnails arranged in a grid and you can view them larger in a list with some additional metadata. To switch between these two modes, tap the buttons for Grid View or List View in the lower right. 11

METADATA & NOTES To see all the available metadata of an image or video you will need to open the Metadata View. 1. Open an individual image or video in Full Screen Gallery mode. 2. Tap the Downward Arrow in the upper right to pull down the Metadata View. The following metadata is saved by Cadrage: Image Title Camera Format Focal Length or Zoom Range Field of View (horizontal & vertical) Date & Time GPS coordinates Compass bearing Notes You can change the title of your image and add notes to individual images and videos in Cadrage s gallery. If Cadrage had permission to access your location during capture, tapping Show on Map will show the image/video location in Google Maps or Apple Maps. THE I MAGE/V IDEO T ITLE By default, you will not be prompted to enter a title after taking a photo or video. Instead, the Default Title will be used. You can change the title by tapping the Pen Button in the top bar when viewing an individual image or video in the Full Screen Gallery. This is not available in the Gallery Overview. CHANGING THE DEFAULT TITLE 1. In the Main View tap on the Menu Button on the far left in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Settings in the pop-up menu. 3. Scroll down to Default Title under Capture Settings and enter a new default title. 12

TITLE INPUT AFTER TAKING A PHOTO/VIDEO 1. In the Main View, tap on the Menu Button on the far left in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Settings in the pop-up menu. 3. Scroll down to Title Input under Capture Settings and choose if you d like to be asked to enter a title after each photo/video you ve taken. SELECTING AND E XPORTING I MAGES & V IDEOS You can export images from the Gallery in both Overview Mode and Full Screen Mode with the Export Button in the bottom bar. When viewing a single image or video, the export button will only export one individual file. If you would like to export more than one file, you will need to do so from the Gallery s Overview Mode: 1. Tap the Button in the upper right to start the selection mode. 2. Select individual images/videos by tapping their thumbnail or select all images with the Button. 3. Tap the Export Button to start exporting the files. You have the following options when exporting image or video files: Send by Upload to Dropbox Add to camera roll (ios only) Exported images have the metadata included in the EXIF data as well as written directly below the image itself. 13

CREATING PDF SHOT LISTS By using the PDF Export button instead of the regular Export Button, Cadrage will create a PDF shot list from the selected images including all metadata. The GPS coordinates are displayed and included in a Google Maps link for your convenience. If you add video files in the export, the first frame of the video will be used in the PDF file. PDFs are compressed for fast and easy sharing. A PDF shot list that contains 20 images has a file size of about 4 MB. UPLOADING TO DROPBOX When trying to upload to Dropbox for the first time, you will be asked if you d like to give Cadrage permission to upload to your Dropbox. After confirming this, you ll need to return to Cadrage and then need to start the upload again. All uploaded files are stored in the Apps/Cadrage folder. This is the only folder in your Dropbox that Cadrage has access to. GEOTAGGING IMAGES & VIDEOS Cadrage saves the GPS coordinates to your images and videos, if you have given permission to do so. You can access the geotags from the Gallery s Full Screen Mode by opening in the Metadata View and tapping on Show on Map, and then selecting a map service app like Google Maps or Apple Maps. Geotags are written into the exported image file conforming to the EXIF standard. When exporting PDF shot lists, each geotag is transformed into a clickable Google Maps link. 14

ENABLE GEO-TAGGING ON AN IPHONE OR IPAD When you start the app for the first time, you will be asked if you would like to allow location access. If you did not give permission, you will need to change this in the settings of your iphone/ipad: 1. Open the ios Settings App. 2. Scroll down to the app list and tap on Cadrage. 3. Tap on Location and change it to While Using the App. WORKING WITH PROJECTS All images and videos are available in chronological order in the Main Gallery. Additionally, they can be assigned to a Project which makes organizing them much more convenient. CREATING A NEW PROJECT 1. Open the Overview Mode in the Gallery. 2. Tap the Menu Button in the upper right-hand corner. 3. In the Gallery Menu, tap the Button on the right. After naming your new Project it will appear in the project list with a checked box next to it. The Checkmark indicates the Active Project and that all newly taken images and videos will be assigned to it. When an image or video is assigned to a project it will always also show up in the Main Gallery. 15

SHOT ORDER INSIDE PROJECTS While the Main Gallery will always display photos and videos in the order they were taken in, inside a Project you can rearrange them by drag-and-drop to create a shooting order. MOVING IMAGES & VIDEOS TO A PROJECT You can assign already taken images and videos from the Main Gallery to a Project, or you can move them from one Project to another. Every file can only be assigned to a single Project at a time. 1. Make the Target Project the Active Project, by checking the box next to the Project s name in the Gallery Menu. 2. Select the images/videos that you d like to move to this Project and then tap the Move Button in the bottom bar. 16

Advanced Features WIDE / TELE ADAPTERS Cadrage lets you see the framing for any camera/lens combination, but you ll notice that you are limited by the hardware of your phone or tablet. When the field of view of the simulation is wider than your device s field of view, there are placeholders around the Live Image to account for the missing image information. When you choose a very long focal length, the image quality starts to decrease due to digital zooming. These limitations can be overcome by using a third-party Wide / Tele Adapter attached to your phone. Cadrage currently supports the following adapters natively, but it also lets you create custom adapters: Moment Wide Lens Moment Tele Lens olloclip 4-in-1 Schneider ipro Super Wide Schneider ipro Wide Schneider ipro Tele If you decide to use a different wide-angle adapter, we recommend looking for an adapter with a conversion factor of around 0.65x and getting the highest quality you can afford. An adapter with 0.5x might give you a wider field of view, but it can exhibit quite a bit of barrel distortion compared to 0.65x. This can reduce the accuracy of the simulation dramatically. ACTIVATING AN ADAPTER IN CADRAGE When attaching an adapter, you ll need to select it in Cadrage to adjust the Live Image for it: 1. In the Main View tap on the Menu Button on the far left in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Wide / Tele Adapter in the pop-up menu. 3. Select your adapter from the list or create a new adapter by tapping the Button and entering the conversion factor. Now the Live Image accounts for the changed field of view. When you remove the adapter from your phone, don t forget to deselect it in Cadrage. 17

DUAL CAMERA PHONES Some newer phones are equipped with two cameras: One wide-angle and one tele camera. Currently, Cadrage supports dual camera use on ios only for the following phones: iphone X iphone 8 Plus iphone 7 Plus By default, Cadrage uses both cameras of these phones. If you need to change this, you ll find Dual Camera Settings in Cadrage s Settings. There you can choose between the following options: Use both cameras Use wide camera only Use tele camera only CREATING CUSTOM CAMERA FORMATS 1. In the Main View tap on the current format in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on Choose Camera in the pop-up menu to open the Camera Database. 3. Tap the Button in the upper right-hand corner. You ll be presented with the following fields: Name Sensor Width Sensor Height Lenses used with this format Aspect Ratio Enter a name for the new format and the effective sensor size in millimeters. Spherical lenses are selected by default, but if the format you are creating is meant for anamorphic shooting adjust accordingly under Lenses used with this format. The aspect ratio is calculated automatically based on the entered sensor sizes. Please note that the aspect ratio here is only for identifying formats in the database. It does not influence the simulation itself. Only the entered Sensor Width and Sensor Height are used to calculate the Live Image. EDITING & DELETING FORMATS 1. Open the Camera Database and long-press on the format you would like to Edit/Delete. 2. Select Edit or Delete from the pop-up. 18

CREATING CUSTOM LENSES 1. In the Main View tap on the focal length in the bottom bar. 2. Tap on the second entry labeled Lenses or Zoom Range. 3. Tap the Button in the upper right-hand corner. When creating a new prime lens, you simply enter the focal length. When creating a new zoom lens, you need to enter the zoom range of the lens. CALIBRATION The Calibration Tool in can be used to improve Cadrage s simulation accuracy. It measures the phone s camera field of view through triangulation. If you are using the ios version of Cadrage you will most likely not need to do this. Cadrage has been manually pre-calibrated by us for all supported ios devices. On Android, it is highly recommended that you go through the calibration before using the app: There are thousands of supported devices, and most manufacturers provide inaccurate camera specifications. Press Start Calibration to open the calibration wizard. The process takes a couple of minutes and requires you to have a tape measure at hand. Alternatively, you can also adjust the numeric calibration values. Both horizontal and vertical values are entered in degrees. TRANSFERRING TO YOUR MAC / PC Besides sending images and videos from Cadrage through or uploading them to your Dropbox, you can also directly transfer them to your Mac or PC using a USB cable. On Android, this is very simple since all files are saved in your phone s gallery, and are accessible through the Explorer (PC) or Finder (Mac). If you have an ios device, and your images/videos are not exported to the camera roll, you can transfer them through itunes. ITUNES TRANSFER 1. Connect your ios device to your computer and select it in itunes. 2. Click on File Sharing on the left and then click on Cadrage in the app list. 3. Select the photos and video you d like to transfer and click Save As. 19
