2 What is a Lela? How does it work? Lela is a mobile application that works as an information hub and allows you to access information from different categories and establishments in a single location. Lela allows you to view content by establishment or category depending on your needs. For example if you are a sports enthusiast, you can open the sports category and view all the latest sports stories. Same thing if you are into entertainment, or politics and so on. Stories are pushed to Lela automatically and frequently meaning that at any time there s something new to read or go through. Lela recently added the functionality for video playback directly within the app itself. To showcase this functionality, Omalaeti Music has made available exclusively only on Lela, pre-release songs from its stable of artists including PDK, Tate Buti and Kamati. Its user interface is designed to be simple and straightforward such that new users can dive in deep with no need for lengthy tutorials or external help. Development on Lela still goes on to date. New ideas are being implemented all the time, the interface is being simplified and submissions being done to the different apps stores when testing is finished. Supported mobile platforms and Phones Lela is available on three different mobile platforms at the moment, Apple s IOS (IPhones, IPads, IPods etc), Google Android and Microsoft s Windows Phone. 4 How to get lela Lela is available in the app stores of Google, Apple and Microsoft. The easiest way to install Lela is to open from your phone and select the app store for your phone. One can also install Lela by opening the app store on your phone and searching for Lela. Find the results by Omalaeti Technologies, and select install. Lela only requires internet as a permission, and will start working immediately. 5 What else can Lela Do? First and foremost Lela is a platform, effectively meaning it can do anything. Companies can run promotions, without clogging the screens with products. Only one item (the promotion name) is shown, only after clicking that promotion will you see the items following that promotion. This allows people to view available promotions and company profiles and still be able to read their content without distractions. Companies can also use Lela to publish notices and announcements, including, image, video and audio content and also makes your smartphone more relevant to your content wise. Lela s development Lela 100% a Namibian developed application. Lela came up as a means to offer more real time news and events to people who have their phones on them all the time. It also allows aggregation of different news sources into one platform. Challenges Faced by Lela The challenges we have faced with Lela is the app store rules and guidelines and having the all the skills for all the different APIs in one house. For example, Apple and Microsoft are very strict when it comes to app submissions. But we have managed and to date have submitted a number of app updates as Lela progresses from being a simple app to a platform supporting multiple media and multiple establishments. Other challenges included creating a platform that is appealing to a wide range of users. Will old people use the app? Will young people use the app? We also had to solve the efficient data usage issue where our app has to use as little data (airtime) as possible for those that won t be connecting via WIFI. To some extent I can say we have succeeded as Lela on all 3 mobile platforms uses as little data as possible yet at the same time giving you the content you want. The other one has been acquiring meaningful quality content. Lela is content based and as such needed content that people would want to read. But as you can see from Lela itself, we now have content issues covered now. Another major challenge has been the proliferation of smart phones in Namibia. Not everyone has a smartphone and Lela is a smart phone app. What is it that can be done to get more people onto smart phones? We see this as an opportunity. Page 5 of 8

6 Opportunities When people hear smart phones, they think expensive. But smart phones do no need to be expensive. There are quite a number of very affordable smartphones that people can acquire and use Lela on. Providers of phones, and network services should make affordable smartphones very visible within their product portfolios to remove the notion most people hold that smart phones are expensive. Another opportunity is advertising. As Lela is a platform, advertisements can be pushed to Lela for promotions, new products and announcements. To keep up with the pledge we made not to nag our users of Lela, advertisements will be kept to a minimum when they are introduced in future. Lela now covering live events Because of its unique position as a mobile app, Lela can change to suit any need. This is clear with the introduction of Lela Live Events. Lela Live Events is a service that allows companies and individals to use Lela to stream their events (private or Public). What this means is as the event is happening, the Lela team will be updating activities as they occur with text, video, audio and image updates. This then allows those people on Lela who cannot attend the event to be able to get a feeling of what is happening. This can be exemplified by the live coverage of the Katrina and Kambwa wedding in the north. Page 6 of 8
