IPAD MINI PROGRAM Dear Parents, Firstly, apologies for the lateness of this paperwork. As you may have heard, late in October Apple decided to revoke all current quotes and cancel all orders pending the release of their new ipad range. As a result we had to wait for the release of new education pricing for these ipads. The good news is we are now able to offer you the brand new ipad Air and ipad Mini Retina. Northern Bay College is offering a 1:1 ipad Mini program in 2014 to our Year 3 5 students. Students will be given an option to buy into the 1:1 program. This program ran during 2013 in Year 6 8 with huge success at all campuses. 1:1 ipad programs are becoming ever more popular in schools, and for good reason. The ipad is a fantastic tool that brings the students learning into the 21 st Century. It opens up the classroom and their minds in ways not seen in traditional learning. These programs have proven results in aiding learning as well as raising engagement and overall enjoyment in the classroom. Northern Bay College has chosen the ipad Mini due to its fantastic educational apps and user friendly design. For our 3 5 students we decided to use the ipad Mini instead of the larger ipad. The ipad Mini is a better weight and size for use by our younger students, it is also more affordable. Internally the ipad Mini is very similar to its larger brother and runs the exact same software. The 1:1 program is entirely voluntary but highly encouraged. However should a student decide not to enter into the program, then they will be given access to the recommended DEECD student to computer ratio of 1:3. Two payment methods are available, one time payment or an instalment option which is more expensive due to financing charges. We are offering an Apple ipad Mini Retina Wi Fi 16GB for Years 3 5 that will be taken home by the student every day. The option to buy the larger ipad Air will also be available to those who wish to have it. The standard package for all ipad Mini Retinas offered through the College is: Apple ipad Mini Retina 16GB Wifi Griffin Survivor Case $20 Apple itunes Card Fire & Theft Insurance Registration for the ipad Mini for the College network and software packages All for $485 When you compare this to buying from a store $479 ipad Mini Retina $84.95 Griffin Survivor Case $20 Apple itunes Card $50 BYOD Fee Total: $ RRP ipad Mini purchased through Northern Bay College ipad Minis will be delivered to campus offices for distribution. They will be handed out only upon full payment or the first instalment ipad Minis not collected within 1 month of parent being notified, will be returned All ipad Minis will have a maximum lifespan of 3 years within the College Paul Salcombe Network Manager

Getting ipad Minis repaired outside the College is not permitted as it voids the warranty. Any ipad Mini stolen\lost must be reported immediately along with a valid Police report Technical ipad Minis are expected to be kept in full working order. Any technical issues must be reported to teaching or technical staff immediately Northern Bay College installs software on every ipad Mini to connect it to the network safely and allows for content\apps to be pushed out to all ipads. This is not to be removed. While the College can see what Apps are installed, push settings and Apps out to the ipads, we cannot see any content such as pictures. The restriction feature on the ipad Mini is not to be turned on by parents, students or guardians. Enabling this feature may result in the ipad Mini being wiped and re setup. If you have concerns or would still like to have some of these restrictions enabled, please contact the Campus Office. The College will be able to enforce these restrictions using our servers. The College is not responsible for any data on the ipad Mini. Data on the ipad Mini is the responsibility of the student to backup. We will however do our best to ensure data is not lost. 9 IPAD PROGRAM QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Can I bring an ipad Mini as BYOD? In the 3 5 community, absolutely. However in 6 8 we don t recommend the ipad Mini as we found the reduced size makes it harder for the students to complete their work in the 6 8 community. My student is in Year 5, do they buy the ipad Mini or the ipad? This is up to you. We understand it would be unreasonable to ask you to buy an ipad Mini for one year then buy another in For that reason, you may purchase either the ipad Mini or ipad and can take that ipad with you into the 6 8 community. We only ask that the ipad remains in the College for no more than 3 years. Our recommendation is to buy an ipad Mini for Year 5, 6 then buy the larger ipad for Year 7, 8. Can I buy the larger ipad in the 3 5 Community or just the Mini? Yes. In the 3 5 community we are offering the ipad Mini, however if you wish to purchase the larger ipad simply go to our website or contact your campus office for the prices for the larger ipad. What happens if I don t join the program? Each learning community will have access to netbooks so your child will not be disadvantaged while at school. Obviously, as they are College property, they cannot be taken home. Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites This is blocked while at school, however it is up to the parents to decide if their child is to have access to the social media systems while at home. Northern Bay College will help to educate your child to be Cyber Smart and to use these social media systems correctly and safely. At home it is highly recommended that you monitor what your child does on these sites. Students have been found to be tethering or hot spotting their mobile phones to their ipads in order to access Facebook and other blocked sites. This is not allowed at school and may result in the ipad being locked or confiscated. What if I leave the College early? If you chose to pay up front, it simply requires the $10 final payment to end the lease. If you have selected the repayment option, all remaining repayments must be paid before exiting the College. Alternatively you may return the ipad to the College. What if my child decides to move to another school? If you chose to pay up front, it simply requires the $10 final payment to end the lease. If you have selected the repayment option, all remaining repayments must be paid before exiting the College. Alternatively you may return the ipad to the College. We do recommend contacting the new school and ask if they will allow you to bring the ipad with you. Can I take my ipad with me to Goldsworthy Campus? Unfortunately no. Goldsworthy runs a very similar program but is running Windows 8 tablets instead of ipads. For this reason no ipad can be taken to Goldsworthy. While the ipad is a fantastic tool, it cannot properly support the curriculum once your student reaches Year 9. Paul Salcombe Network Manager
IPAD PROGRAM QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Can I install my own Apps on the ipad? Yes. In fact, students will be expected to install their own Apps. Northern Bay College will be able to install Apps onto ipads as the teacher requires as well. Please just make sure Apps are age appropriate. The College also may choose to block or remove Apps that are not age appropriate or being misused. Do I need my own itunes account? Yes. Assistance will be provided if necessary during Term 1. You may also link your current itunes account to your new ipad. For students under the age of 13, we require parent\guardian permission to sign up to itunes. The permission form can be downloaded from the website or is available at the campus offices. What happens to Apps\Settings installed by Northern Bay College if I leave? These are automatically removed once you exit the program. Can I hand my ipad down to a sibling at the end of the program? The ipad only has an effective lifespan of 3 years, for this reason the maximum time an ipad may remain in the College is 3 years. If you have a student in Year 8 who has had the ipad for only one year, but in 2014 has a student entering Year 4, then that student may have it for the remaining 2 years. So long as the ipad is no more than 3 years old. What happens if I fail to make my repayments? As the ipad remains the property of Northern Bay College for the duration of the lease, if the repayment schedule is not met, then the ipad must be returned to the College. What happens if my ipad is stolen? All ipads are covered by at least Fire & Theft insurance covering such events. A police report will be required as well as the payment of $100 excess. Can I buy accessories for my ipad? Absolutely. There are a massive amount of accessories available for the ipad. However they must not effect the operation of the ipad in the classroom. What if I don t want to take my ipad home one night for some reason? Ask your teacher if your ipad can be stored in a secure room for the night. What happens if I don t have wireless internet at home? Obviously having wireless internet is an advantage, but by no means essential. Many Apps on the ipad do not require internet access. Do I have to buy Apps for my ipad? All required paid Apps will be provided by Northern Bay College, or will be covered by the $20 itunes card included in the purchase. Alternatively the College may buy Apps in bulk and distribute them to the ipads. Paul Salcombe Network Manager

1. Vision Statement Northern Bay P 12 College recognises the importance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and the ever growing demand for it as an educational tool, helping prepare students for the future. 21 st century students spend increasing amounts of time online, learning and collaborating. To be safe online and to gain the greatest benefit from the opportunities provided through an online environment, students need to do the right thing by themselves and others online, particularly when no one is watching. Safe and responsible behavior is explicitly taught at our school and parents/carers are requested to reinforce this behavior at home. 2. Definition of Digital Technologies This Acceptable Use Agreement applies to digital technologies, social media tools and learning environments established by Northern Bay P 12 College or accessed using school owned networks or systems, including but not limited to: School owned ICT devices Mobile Phones and instant messaging Internet and Intranet Social networking sites Video conferences and web conferences Accessing files from the internet/other sources Printing material Copying, saving or distributing files Video and photo sharing websites Blogs Micro blogs Forums, discussion boards and groups Wikis Vod and podcasts Publishing and browsing on the internet Network accessible resources Streaming media 3. Appropriate ICT Use Northern Bay P 12 College uses the internet and digital technologies as teaching and learning tools. We see the internet and digital technologies as valuable resources, but acknowledge they must be used responsibly. At Northern Bay P 12 College we: have policies in place that outline the values of the school and expected behaviors when students use digital technology and the internet provide a filtered internet service provide supervision, direction in online activities and when using digital technologies for learning support students in developing digital literacy skills have a cyber safety program at the college which is reinforced college wide use mobile technologies for educational purposes provide support to parents/carers to understand this agreement provide support to parents/carers through information evenings work with students to outline and reinforce the expected behaviors while using technology at school and also at home Northern Bay College expects that students will use ICT that is made available to them in a respectful manor. It is important to take care of and make sure any ICT equipment is looked after. It is important to look after ICT that is available to all students as these are shared resources used by all and downtime could result in loss of access to network resources due to unavailability.
4. College Owned ICT Devices and Infrastructure School owned ICT devices and infrastructure relate to any property that has been purchased, donated or leased to the school and is the ownership of Northern Bay P 12 College. This includes but is not limited to: Desktop computers School owned 1:1 devices Laptop computers Notebook computers Interactive technology Projectors Ethernet points ICT infrastructure Display units Wireless Access Points Printers Computer peripherals Computer Tablets Portable devices Any student found damaging or to have damaged any school owned ICT devices or infrastructure will be responsible for reimbursing the school for any costs associated with the replacement or repair of damages to devices or infrastructure. 5. It can include: abusive texts and s imitating others online inappropriate discussions posting unkind message or images excluding others online inappropriate image tagging Northern Bay P 12 College has a zero tolerance on all forms of bullying and treats all offences seriously. If found to be conducting yourself in a manner that is not within Northern Bay College guidelines consequences will be enforced. 6. Digital Communications Digital communication involves the transfer of data electronically using various device types (e.g. , Facebook, etc.). The data that is sent online or via can be treated as physical evidence if required. The punctuation and grammar used when conversing in a digital format can carry weight and infer the same amount of emotion as if discussing in person (e.g. Using bold or underlined text can infer anger/aggression). It is important that you remember everything you do online is recorded and can be traceable in the event of any breach of Northern Bay College rules and regulations. 7. Personal Data Personal data that is stored on personal devices is the responsibility of the user. Public access computers are not to be used for storage and can be wiped by the ICT team at any time. Due to the mechanical nature of computers we recommend that data be backed up regularly. NBC makes available network storage that is available at school which can be used to back up school work. The ICT team however actively monitors these folders meaning if found with illegal content it will be deleted without question and the student may face consequences.
8. 1:1 Programs 8.1 Purpose The digital device is to be used to assist student learning both at school and at home. As an educational tool they provide a new way of engaging a student in the classroom to promote learning. The nature of technology also allows for an amount of self discovery of information from the internet (if permitted access). Utilising technology in the classroom in this way has benefits for both students and staff. 8.2 Use at School Charging of 1:1 devices is expected to be done at home. Students are not to bring chargers to school and use them. Students are to follow the guidelines as set out in the 1:1 program policy and the teacher s expectations for classroom use. 9. It is at the discretion of the campus principal or teacher in charge to determine an appropriate course of action for any students or parents found to be operating outside of any of Northern Bay P 12 College policies and procedures. Northern Bay College also reserves the right to call police for serious illegal offences if deemed so by the campus or college principal. 12.
