IPAD SETUP SETTING UP A NEW IPAD: Apple maintains a detailed, 130+ page manual for the ipad at If you have questions about the setup we encourage you to download and read the various sections of that guide. SETTING UP AN IPAD YOU ALREADY OWN You must reset your ipad to factory settings. Please make sure you have saved any content that you want a record of, as this will be wiped from the ipad. Note that any apps that have been purchased with a pre-existing Apple ID will not be lost, they are permanently attached to that Apple ID. Open the Settings app Select General and Reset Then select Erase All Content and Settings You can now follow the instructions below for setting up your ipad.
BEFORE YOU START You need to be able to connect to a wireless network. You can use the Newington Students wireless at school or personal wireless at home. For Newington, your son s Student ID (login) and password will provide access. For home you ll need to know the shared key/passphrase. SETUP: Turn on the ipad and follow the Setup Assistance. This will guide you through the setup process. Select language British English Select country or region Australia Connect your home wireless. If you do not have wireless at home, you can come to the Library before or after school and use the Newington Students wireless. For Newington, your son s login and password will provide access. Select Enable Location Services for location services Select Set Up as New ipad Select Skip This Step when prompted to sign in with an Apple ID. This will allow you to create an Apple ID later that does not require a credit card to be attached. Select Skip again when prompted to create an Apple ID Select Agree in the bottom right hand corner of the screen Select Automatically Send for diagnostics Select Start Using ipad You will now need to create an Apple ID. See page 4.
ALL ABOUT APPLE IDS WHAT IS AN APPLE ID? An Apple ID is a special user account ( address and password) used to purchase and manage apps and to configure settings on the ipad. Each ipad must be configured with an Apple ID based on the student s school address. Where students are under 13 the College asks parents to create and manage an Apple ID on behalf of their son. Each boy needs his own Apple ID based on his school address. This address can be changed when a student leaves Newington. The best resource to learn about Apple IDs is the Apple ID support website CREATING AN APPLE ID It is best to create an Apple ID directly from your ipad. You need to use the student s Newington address (e.g @newington.nsw.edu.au) for the Apple ID. The address for an Apple ID can be changed when required. The number at the beginning of the address is the same as the school library number. The parents of new students will be ed their Student ID and password. If creating an Apple ID to be managed on behalf of a student under 13 years you must enter a suitable date of birth. We suggest using that of the parent to ensure it is easily remembered but still passes Apple s test. When creating an Apple ID each user is asked to provide a password and security questions that must be remembered when re-setting or changing settings on the account. You need to record these on the ipad Agreement (page 11) and return a copy of these details to your classroom teacher (current students) or the front office (new students). You must also record these details for your own records. A space on page 7 has been provided. Creating Apple ID on the ipad This is the best method of setting up an Apple ID because it does not require a credit card to be attached. Open up the App Store Search for PicCollage made by Cardinal Blue. This app is free. You will be prompted to download the Apple Apps. Select skip for these apps. They can be downloaded at a later point in time. On PicCollage tab where it says Free and then Install Choose to Create New Apple ID Choose Australia as the Country
Scroll down and select Agree to the terms and conditions Fill in your son s school address using his student ID number and create a password for him (record below). The address is of the format XXXXX@newington.nsw.edu.au (where XXXXX is the student ID / username for each boy). Select three security questions and complete answers you will remember (record below). Fill in a rescue address. We recommend this is an address of one parent (record below). Fill in the date of birth (record below). We suggest using that of the parent to ensure it is easily remembered but still passes Apple s test.
Choose whether to subscribe to itunes s. We suggest turning these off. Select None for Billing Information You can choose whether to attach itunes card. This can easily be done at a later point in time and is not required for use at Newington. Enter your billing address details and phone number.
You will need to verify your Apple ID by opening an that will be sent. You will need to verify your Apple ID by opening an that will be sent. To access your , students can login to Note that the username is the student number only, not the full address. Open the sent by Apple and click on the link to verify the Apple ID. Please keep this for your personal records. This is very important information. Apple ID Password: Security Question 1: Security Answer 1: Security Question 2: Security Answer 2: Security Question 3: Security Answer 3: RESCUE
USING THE APPLE ID The Apple ID is used to: Set up and manage the ipad Purchase non-school apps* Install Casper-provided school apps Change icloud settings *At Newington we re taking advantage of Apple s Volume Purchase Program for Education (VPP) to bulk purchase required educational apps for the boys. The $70 program levy will contribute to at least $100 of educational apps over the next two years. These are provided by our Casper Self Service app. Mrs Clemens will setup Casper with the students on Tuesday 3rd December (new students) and Friday 29th November (current students). Families are, of course, free to purchase and install other apps directly through the Apple App Store for personal or recreational use. ATTACHING AN ITUNES VOUCHER We recommend that you do not attach your personal credit card to your son s ipad. Instead it is advised that if purchasing additional (non-school) items you purchase an itunes voucher and attach this to the ipad. Any supermarket, service station or electronics store supplies itunes vouchers. Open the App Store Select the Featured tab down the bottom Select the Redeem tab Here you can redeem your itunes voucher Note that all apps required at school will be administered using Casper Self Service. So an itunes voucher is only required for recreational or personal apps that cost money.
YEAR IPAD AGREEMENT This ipad agreement explains the obligations and responsibilities for all Year 5 boys at Newington in 2014 related to the use of ipads for learning and communication. The attached form for this agreement should be returned to classroom teachers (current students) or the front office (new students). In addition to the attached ICT Policy (2014) the following should be noted: In early 2014 all families will be invoiced $70 for applications and services related to the ipad. This includes subscription to Casper Self Service for settings and apps as well as at least $100 of apps (at their App Store prices). The College requires that all boys ipads remain enrolled in the College mobile device management system, Casper. Mrs Clemens will set this up with the students. There is a great impact on learning if a boy is without his ipad for extended periods of time. If a boy s ipad is lost or damaged arrangements must be made to ensure the student is not without their device for more than two days. In the case where a boy has insurance and/or current AppleCare Protection Plan, a loan ipad will be supplied to him by Mrs Clemens in the Library office. If the damaged/lost ipad is not covered, the school can supply a rental ipad at $20 per week or part thereof until a new ipad obtained. STUDENT ICT POLICY 2014 The College recognises that students will use a range of communication devices, resources and services, both College owned and student-owned. Boys are expected to use all ICT devices, resources and services responsibly, purposefully and ethically. Usage of devices, services and resources is always at the discretion of class teachers and other College staff. All boys are expected to take personal responsibility for maintaining possession of their device at all times on campus and to bring their device to class ready to learn: Boys are to have their devices charged and ready for use. Devices should never be left unattended and are to be stored in classroom tote trays when not in use. Boys need to rectify any login or technical issues promptly and not during class time. All boys are expected to carefully manage their data and their online College identity: Passwords should never be written down at school and or given to another person; students will be held responsible for all activity undertaken using their login/password. It is wise to keep a record of your passwords at home in a secure location; Although the College takes care to backup server-based resources, keeping backups of critical files (e.g. assignment work) is each boy s responsibility;
Backing up your ipad is essentially making a copy of it on your home laptop or computer so you can restore our files if anything was to happen to your device. Backups to itunes are recommended at least once per fortnight. The following link provides instructions for this process In the use of ICT devices, resources and services, all boys are expected to act with integrity, and use these services for educational purposes: Students should respect the holders of copyright, never plagiarise the work of others and always use appropriate referencing systems; Boys must not access or attempt to access inappropriate sites or resources; As with other non-ict areas, vandalism is always inappropriate; Unless specifically allowed by a teacher for educational purposes, the sending and receiving of text messages or phone calls and the use of social networking sites, gaming and services (eg. Facebook) are strictly prohibited during scheduled class time. The College provides high speed Internet and provides filtering to protect students and help them stay focused on educational activities. Boys may not use personal 3G/4G mobile broadband hot spots to provide alternate Internet connections. The College installs software to help configure, monitor and support the device on campus. Newington software/apps or settings must remain in place throughout the student s time at the College. In the use of ICT devices, services and resources, boys are expected to treat others and collaborative working environments with respect: It is never acceptable to digitally record (photo, audio or video) boys or teachers or distribute that information without permission from that person and your class teacher; Negative or defamatory information about other boys, staff or the College should never be posted online; the usual College rules and other laws and regulations still apply to bullying and harassment online; Boys must not access or try to gain access to private or sensitive information or the account of another boy or member of College staff; The equipment and services of the College and other boys should always be treated with care and respect; Boys are expected to follow appropriate etiquette and protocols when communicating with staff, other students, and those outside the College.
