Bring Your Own Device BYOD - What does this mean to you?

Goals of this New Policy: Move students forward in a 21st century learning environment. Recognize the power of technology tools to support 21st century teaching and learning. Create an environment that focuses on the Four Cs of 21st Century education. Communication Creativity, Critical Thinking Collaboration. It s for Educational Purposes ONLY!

What device(s) can I bring? ipad Laptop Tablet ereader (any type; Kindle, Nook, etc.) ipod All devices listed above must have wireless capabilities! This policy does not include CELL PHONES!!! CELL PHONES are NOT part of the Bring Your Own Device policy!

What Will BYOD Mean to Me? Provides students who bring their device with filtered, wireless Internet access. Students must connect to BYOD wireless network No password. Filtered Internet Access! Meaning you will have the same access on your own device as you would have if you were using a computer at school. (Things like YouTube, majority of online games will be blocked!) Student will NOT have access to: Network Shared Drives (J: drive, H: drive, etc.) Printers

BYOD Parent and Student Agreement Let s take a look at the 1 st paragraph Buncombe County Schools (BCS) is committed to moving students and staff forward in a 21st century learning environment. As part of this plan, Buncombe County Schools will allow students and staff to bring their own devices (BYOD) during any teaching and learning day. With classroom teacher discretion, students may use their own devices in the classroom. Participants should use personal devices during the instructional day to support their educational activities and maintain academic integrity in all their work at all times. Access for personal reasons is secondary and must not disrupt the learning of others. The current cell phone policy for students remains in effect and supersedes this statement of use. It s up to your TEACHER when and IF you have your device out! Devices are used for EDUCATIONAL purposes ONLY!!! This means this policy is not for cell phones and our original cell phone rules must still be followed!

2 nd Paragraph of Agreement The BYOD wireless network will only provide filtered Internet access. BCS staff are not responsible for configuring personal devices to access this network. Users may not access the Buncombe County Schools network via hardwired connection with any personal device. BYOD devices will not have access to the internal BCS network or resources provided by the internal BCS network, including shared drives and printers. Meaning you will have the same access to Internet sites as you would if you were using a school computer! Teachers and/or Media Staff will NOT help you access this network. YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO GET TO YOUR WIRELESS SETTINGS! And again, your device must be wireless!! Means no access to our network including shared drives (J:drive, etc.) and NO PRINTING!!

2 nd Paragraph continued Use of a device under the district s BYOD Statement of Use requires the users adherence to the BCS Technology Acceptable Use and Internet Policy (646). Students who bring their own device must still follow all the rules of the BCS Technology Acceptable Use and Internet Policy!!!

3 rd Paragraph of Agreement Responsibility for maintenance and repair of privately owned devices rests with the individual owner. Buncombe County Schools (BCS), and its employees, are not responsible for the maintenance and repair of personal devices. Submitted Bolt tickets without proper asset management tags associated with BCS property will not be supported. Teachers and/or the Media Staff will NOT fix, troubleshoot or repair your device if there is a problem! That is up to you!!!!!!

4 th Paragraph of Agreement It is the joint responsibility of school personnel and the parent or guardian of each student to educate the student about his/her responsibilities and to establish expectations when using technology. Responsibility to keep privately owned devices safe and secure rests with the individual owner. Your teacher will set BYOD expectations that will need to be followed! This is a privilege and your right to bring your own device can be taken away!! Your teachers are NOT responsible for your device! You ARE!!!

4 th Paragraph Continued BYOD participants are prohibited from sharing personal devices, creating hot spots, and deliberately tampering with school system property or property of others, including uploading and downloading illegal material or inappropriate content. Use of a personal device that has full wireless access from a 3rd party carrier requires the users adherence to the district s BYOD Statement of Use and the BCS Technology Acceptable Use and Internet Policy (646). Students can not use another students device! NO SHARING OF DEVICES!!! Students who bring their own device MUST hit the BYOD wireless network provided by BCS. Students may not use another wireless provider!!! Teachers WILL check to make sure you are on the BYOD network!

5 th Paragraph Buncombe County Schools (BCS), and its employees, are not liable for any device stolen or damaged while on campus or off-campus at a BCS sponsored event. Eblen Intermediate teachers and/or staff are not liable if your device is stolen or damaged meaning we will not pay replacement costs or damage costs!! If a device is stolen or damaged, such incidents will be handled through the local administrative office in the same manner as other personal artifacts that are impacted in similar situations. Any device connecting to the district internal Wi-Fi is subject to seizure under certain circumstances. Any student caught trying to access BCS secure Internet connection may have their device seized!

Useful Analogies to Help You Understand BYOD The Tooth Brush it s something we don t share with others! The Parking Lot the space is there, but there are lines, rules, and norms to be followed or use/access can be taken away! The T-Shirt, Backpack and Locker displayed images and the contents are subject to school rules and are susceptible to search!
