Midlothian Independent School District Bring Your Own Device - BYOD Information Guide for Parents and Students

Purpose MISD allows elementary, middle, and high students to bring their own technology devices (laptops, smart phones, ereaders, ipads, etc.) to use at specified times during the day. Use of devices to enhance in the classroom will be pursued when deemed appropriate at individual discretion. What is BYOD? Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is an initiative that will allow students who have personal technology devices to bring them to to educational purposes under the direction of a or administrator. Midlothian ISD Wi-Fi Guest Network Information When a student brings his/her own technology device to a campus, it is mandatory that the device utilizes the MISD Wi-Fi network. For example, a student will choose the MISD Student network to browse the Internet. By logging into the MISD wireless network, they are accepting the terms of the Midlothian ISD Acceptable Use Policy and the Guidelines for Use of Personal Telecommunication Devices. Once on the MISD Student network, users will have filtered Internet access just as they would on a district owned device. Responsibilities Midlothian ISD provides students with access to the District s electronic communications system for educational purposes. The electronic communications system is defined as the District s network, servers, computers, mobile devices, peripherals, applications, databases, online resources, Internet access, , and any other technology designated for use by students. With this educational opportunity comes responsibility. While the District uses filtering technology and protection measures to restrict access to inappropriate material, it is not possible to absolutely prevent such access. It will be each student s responsibility to follow the rules for appropriate and responsible use as outlined in the Midlothian ISD Guidelines for Use of Personal Telecommunication Devices. Access to the Midlothian ISD network is a privilege and administrators may review files and messages to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are acting responsibly. See the Midlothian ISD Acceptable Use Procedures for more information. Points to Remember

The technology devices students bring to are their sole responsibility. The campus or district assumes no responsibility for personal devices if they are lost, loaned, damaged, or stolen and only limited time of resources will be spent trying to locate stolen or lost items. Personal devices may be subject to investigation in accordance with District Policy. Students are to keep their devices secure at all times and not loan to others. Students must keep devices on silent or vibrate mode. Grading of Student Work Students who do not have access to personal devices will be provided with an alternative way to complete the assignment or a district owned device may be provided based on availability. Frequently Asked Questions! I am uncertain on specific policy regarding times and locations my personal device can be used during the day. Exactly when am I allowed? Elem. School Middle School Midlothian Heritage High School BYOD *Pilot Program Midlothian High School, in the Library and in the classroom with direction when used for instructional purposes. t to be used anywhere else before. * MHHS Students must sign BYOD Pilot Program Contract before they will be allowed to participate. This contract will be available to be signed the first day of.

" I brought my device to to use in the classroom, but my said I couldn t use it in her classroom. Can I still use it? The in the classroom has the final say on procedures in the classroom. If he or she asks you not to use your device, then you should follow those directions. Access is available but not guaranteed for each classroom situation. # I have my laptop/mobile device with me in class. How do I get on the Internet now? Most laptops or other personal technology devices (smart phones), will detect a wireless connection when you are near one. Your device should prompt you to join an available network. When prompted, choose the MISD Student wireless ID from the list. $ My laptop is not prompting me to choose a wireless network. Is there another way to connect? In the settings menu of your device, there is usually a network access icon. Go to this icon and choose your campus Wi-Fi network or prompt your computer to look for wireless networks in range. Always consult your device s owner s manual for exact directions for accessing a wireless network. % I just can t get my laptop to connect to the network. Can I get some help from someone? It is not the responsibility of your s or other MISD staff to troubleshoot individual devices during the day. Check your owner s manual for issues concerning connectivity. & What if my laptop or phone is stolen or damaged? What recourse can I take? Students bring electronic communication devices to at their own risk, just like any other personal item. The District will not be held responsible if an electronic device or other item is lost, stole, or misplaced, including those that have been confiscated. ' I don t have my own electronic communications device to bring to. Will I be penalized or miss out on instruction?! It is not mandatory for students to bring a device, even if they do own one. When electronic devices are used to enhance in the classroom, students without a personal device may be provided access to an appropriate district owned digital device, based on availability or given an alternate assignment. Keep in mind that can be enhanced greatly for the entire class even if only a handful of students have a device! ( Is it required that I use the Midlothian ISD wireless network when using the Internet? Can I use my own 3G, 4G, 5G, or LTE service?, it is absolutely required that you use the district filtered wireless and is stated as such in the Acceptable Use Procedures and the Guidelines for Use of Personal Telecommunication Devices. Using your own wireless provider during is a breach of both agreements and the violation may result in confiscation of your device.

Important Facts on MISD Wireless Usage Users of the MISD Student and Guest Wi-Fi network have filtered Internet access just as they would on a district owned device. MISD offers many educational resources via the Internet. These resources can be accessed any time, anywhere the student has access to the Internet therefore is extended beyond the classroom. Students in grades K-12 may now bring their own technology devices (laptop, netbook, cell phone, table, etc.) to Midlothian ISD campuses and they will be utilized in the classroom at the discretion of the. By connecting to the MISD Student Wi-Fi, users accept the terms of the MISD Acceptable Use Guidelines, located on the Midlothian ISD website. Use of technology is a privilege and not a right. Students are expected to exhibit digital responsibility and follow the Acceptable Use Procedures while using technology. The Acceptable Use Procedures may be found on Midlothian-isd.net and a hard copy will give provided with a written request Tips for Success with Midlothian BYOD Clearly label all devices and power cords with your student s name Set a password or passcode on the device Bring devices to fully changed and in good working order Record the serial number and model information at home Students may bring headphones to use with their device as many digital resources have audio Your homeowner s or renter s insurance police may cover lost or damaged personal electronic devices Students should silence or place devices on vibrate while working in class
