5 3. Product Description 3.1 Inmarsat Mini-M Inmarsat mini-m phone provides high quality mobile office applications and 98 % land mass coverage, with the exception of the poles. Designed to exploit the spot beam power of the Inmarsat 3 satellites, the latest mini-m s are among the smallest and most cost effective mobile satcom units, weighing about 2kg and resembling a laptop computer in size. The 2 main manufacturers supplying mini-m, are; Thrane & Thrane AS Nera Mini-Ms are also available in vehicular, coastal vessel and rural-phone version, with the later being fitted with an 80cm dish antenna. Featuring gyro-stabilised antenna platforms, maritime units are installed in coastal vessels and yachts. Similarly, the antennas of vehicular versions are readily roof-mounted on cars, trucks and trains. Mini-M unit sales retail for as little as $2,600, with usage charges from around $1.90 per minute for international calls. (Voice, fax & data). 6 3.2 Inmarsat GAN. (Global Area Network) The Global Area Network (GAN) features the latest transmission technology, making it possible to send and receive large volumes of data wherever you are. In addition, it gives you always on-line, cost-effective access to corporate networks, Internet and facilities The terminals are compact (slightly bigger then A4) and light weight (3.5kg to 4kg). They are robust, reliable and easy to use. They enjoy a long term battery life (up to 4 hours talk time, 70 hours standby), are compatible with a notebook computer and allow plug and play. These units are produced by a number of producers; Thrane & Thrane AS Nera ECI Eurocom The GAN-terminal offers the following services: 1: Full Mobile ISDN Service, which redefines levels of speed and capacity across multiple forms of communication. 2: Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS) which allows for continuous and low cost online connections. Costs are minimised because you are only charged for the actual transmitted data packets rather than for the time you are online. MPDS is based on the IP (Internet Protocol) protocol that is standard for internet and intranet connections. 3. The GAN Mobile Low Speed Service offers all the features of the Inmarsat mini-m terminal, namely: Voice at 4.8kbits/s and Fax and Data at 2.4kbits/s. 7 3.3 GAN Case Study; Philippines banking Xantic has announced the signing of a groundbreaking agreement with Faslink Communications. Xantic will contribute satellite airtime and business support to Faslink, which is providing a new generation of communication facilities to banks and financial institutions across the Philippine archipelago. Faslink Communications provides complete end-to-end turn-key solutions to the banking industry. Working in partnership with Xantic, Faslink is now able to offer financial institutions in The Philippines a solution based on Global Area Network (GAN) terminals, with Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS) capabilities. This will provide the missing link to banks located in rural areas, where the current communications infrastructure is neither economical nor reliable. The communication infrastructure challenge faced by the Philippine archipelago offers a textbook example of the benefits of satcom solutions. It comprises over 7,100 islands, with vast mountainous terrains separated by bodies of water. Currently, all financial transactions in rural areas are still covered by cheques, with all the delays in both payment and actual financial status data this implies. The new Xantic/Faslink service will offer on-line data and transfers to over 2800 banks spread across the provinces of The Philippines. In excess of six million workers located in rural areas will then receive their wages on time, just one of the practical improvements in service that these banks will now be able to offer their customers. Faslink is now preparing comprehensive EFT/POS and ATM switching facilities using GAN terminals with MPDS. This will offer a secure, quick, cost effective and reliable way of linking the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) in The Philippines. The turn-key project will be rolled out over a period of three years. Xantic conducted an extensive testing programme, helping ensure that the banks will be able to conduct business without any interruption. One of the primary reasons for choosing to work with Xantic is the local support it offers us, commented Ronald Fesalbon, Chief Operating Officer of Faslink Communications. Xantic s staff has been involved in testing the equipment for the first banks involved in the project and will continue in providing on-site assistance with the deployment of the network. MPDS operates on 64kbit/s satellite channels, for both the to-mobile and from-mobile directions. It allows for continuous, always-online connections and because it is being packet switched, users are only charged for the actual data packets sent and received rather than for the time online. 8 3.4 Regional BGAN The Regional BGAN solution is a high-speed data service via satellite using 144 kbit/s shared channels. Simply connect the satellite IP modem (User Terminal) to a PC or PDA (via Bluetooth, USB or Ethernet interfaces), point the antenna in the direction of the satellite and it s business as usual. With Regional BGAN, connection to the internet, accessing corporate LANs or exchanging information with other offices is as easy as sitting at your office computer. What is Regional BGAN? Regional BGAN provides continuity of normal working life beyond the reach of terrestrial fixed and mobile communication infrastructures. High-speed: more than twice the speed of the current GPRS terrestrial systems. Hardware The Regional BGAN hardware consists of a satellite IP modem called a User Terminal (UT). This lightweight, notebook-sized unit connects the end-user s PC or PDA with the satellite network. The set-up process is identical to connecting to the Internet via a standard phone modem: users need no knowledge of satellite or modem operation just straightforward plug and play. The dimensions of the UT are: 300mm x 240mm x 40mm (11.8 x 9.4 x 1.6 ). Xantic will distribute the Regional BGAN UT through three different partners. All Xantic customers can contact those partners and purchase the unit directly from them. Please note that Regional BGAN works exclusively on SIM Cards. 9 Infrastructure In line with Xantic s drive to provide a superior network, significant investments have been made in our own POP (Point of Presence). This offers you an excellent and solutions-focused Regional BGAN service. Coverage Regional BGAN is available in up to 99 countries in the footprint of the Thuraya satellite (number is license dependent: see separate factsheet for details). The availability is shown in the map below. How fast is the Regional BGAN service? Regional BGAN offers data speeds up to 144 kbit/s across a shared channel. The user is offered direct packet-switched access to IP networks. Xantic Makes the Difference Xantic has already started to optimise the AMOS portfolio for Regional BGAN, adding Least Cost Routing and extra IP-functionality. In addition, partnering arrangements with third parties are being pursued to provide industry-specific applications or value adds. Xantic s own Point of Presence infrastructure offers seamless connection to our Value Added Service portfolio. All this means that Regional BGAN is far more than a communications platform alone. It is a fully integrated package, focusing on total solutions. As well as specialised software applications, Regional BGAN also makes available a range of off-the-shelf applications. ISP Value Added Service 4.1 TAB (traffic and Billing Explorer) Xantic's traffic and billing software will provide you with a complete and accurate daily and / or monthly overview of your clients communications on all platforms. Daily or monthly updates will be sent to you via and you will be able to monitor your clients communication costs by setting alerts and automatically generated overviews. You will be able to sort your clients monthly invoices and the accounting towards different parties by sorting the data in exactly the way you want to see the communication costs of each client or group of clients, up to your requirements. 11 4.2 Sentinel Sentinel is Xantic s online traffic management system for Inmarsat B, M, Mini-M and GAN traffic. It provides online access through log-in and password on a secure connection. Traffic data is updated approximately every 10 minutes. Credit units representing airtime can be assigned to (and counted down per) group of terminals. Credit units will be counted down evenly amongst the terminals in the group. Groups of terminals can be barred automatically when credit units run out, but can be barred manually as well Individual terminals, terminals in groups and terminal groups can all be barred and opened online. A complete list of all your terminals is available in the system. Notifications on reaching all credit limits and all barrings within your ISP code can be sent to three different addresses of your choice. In addition, notifications on reaching credit limits and barrings per terminal group can be sent to three different addresses as well. These last three addresses can be entered and edited online. Sentinel benefits: Limit your credit risk Terminals can be barred automatically after credit has run out Group terminals for easy customer management Select terminals to be monitored directly from an online list of all your terminals: no need to send requests to Xantic 4.3 Pre-Paid Sim Cards The customer pays his SIM card in advance. No subscriptions, no bills are needed. Mini-M Prepaid makes it possible to sell mini-m airtime to customers whose credibility is poor or difficult to check. Mini-M Prepaid can be used with all mini-m terminals available in the market as long as there is no SIM lock applied to the terminal. A mini-m Prepaid package includes a Prepaid SIMCard, a PIN/PUK mailer and Mini- M Prepaid phone numbers, including phone, fax and data. Terminals can also be activated prepaid via the ISP-code Besides this package ValueCards can be obtained that can be used to load credit onto a Prepaid SIMCard. ValueCards are available in 3 sizes: 100, 250 and 1000 units. Beneath the scratch layer, on the back of the ValueCard, a 15-digit payment code can be found that can be used to increase the credit on a SIMCard via short access code 26#. Customers can only use ValueCards if they are activated. 12 4.4. AMOS Connect This high end system that was recently developed in co-ordination between Station 12 & Spectec and purely for the Maritime market. It can be used as the user interface or at the back end. Amos Connect could save you up to 85% of your telecommunications cost. Here are some of the major benefits it has to offer. Full Duplex: Which means you will receive and send files at exactly the same time, therefore cutting your satellite airtime by up to 50% Automatic message compression, giving an average 50% reduction across all file types, and as high as 85% compression on text and database files; Automatic Mid-message recovery, for minimum retransmission. Reduces modems synchronization and handshake Blacklist/whitelist, hence selecting who can and cannot send messages to the mobiles user or ship. Functionality: In additional to satellite communication, Amos Mail also serves as a fax server, both for outgoing & incoming faxes. It has functionality to send and receive telex, it has a GN-comtext gateway, and an internet mail gateway. In addition, a GSM gateway also provides possibility for users to communicate by mobile phones where possible. Integration: Amos Mail integrates well with other systems, such as MS Exchange, Lotus Notes, Netscape mail and others.
