1 Configuring AMOS Mail & Connect for Inmarsat GAN 1. Introduction. This document describes how to configure and use AmosConnect with GAN ISDN and MPDS. AMOS Mail / Connect with GAN PC with 2 serial ports and AMOS Mail software Serial Cable for MPDS connection (max 5 metres) Serial Cable for ISDN connection (max 5 metres) ISDN Terminal Adaptor ISDN cable GAN Terminal GAN Antenna Benefits of this configuration: - Option to use the ISDN or the MPDS channels With MPDS you can remain online for extended periods and only pay for the data transmitted With ISDN you can communicate at high speed (64 kilobits per second) 2. Prerequisites The following must be in place to use AMOS Mail / Connect with Inmarsat GAN: - 1. Inmarsat GAN terminal fully installed and commissioned. 2. An HDLC-compatible ISDN terminal adaptor. AMOS Mail / AmosConnect only support the HDLC protocol and not the PPP protocol. The optional PPP Modem for the Nera Worldcommunicator terminal is not compatible an additional HDLC-Compatible ISDN adaptor is required with this terminal. 3. Serial cable to connect the AMOS Mail / Connect communications PC to the RS232 port of the GAN terminal for MPDS. Serial cable must support full handshaking i.e. must use all nine wires. 4. 2 5. AMOS Mail licence 6. Set of AMOS Mail manuals (User guide, Administration guide, Installation guide) 7. The AMOS Mail / Connect hub must be configured to allow TCP/IP connections. AmosConnect customers can request this by selecting the TCP/IP option on the AmosConnect Application / Change Request form. 3. Configure Windows for MPDS 3.1. Add modem device in Windows 1. Go to Control Panel then select Add/Remove Hardware. 2. Click Next

3 3. Click Add/Troubleshoot a device then Next. 4. Click Add a New Device then Next.

4 5. Click No, I want to select the hardware from a list then Next. 6. Highlight Modems then click Next.

5 7. Select Don t detect my modem; I will select it from a list then Next.

6 8. Select Standard Modem Types and Standard bps Modem then click Next. 9. Select the COM port then click Next.

7 10. The terminal is now installed as a modem.

8 3.2. Set Modem Properties for MPDS 1. Open Control Panel 2. Open Phone and Modem Options then click Modems

9 3. Highlight the Standard 28800bps Modem and click Properties. The following screen appears: -

10 4. Click Advanced. The following screen appears: -

11 5. Enter the following Extra Initialization Command: - AT+WS45=4 6. Click OK. 7. Click Dialing Rules then New. Fill-in a new dialing rule as follows: - Location name : Inmarsat MPDS Country/region : Inmarsat Area Code : 1234 (the area code is never actually used) 8. Click OK twice to save settings. 4. Configure Dialup Networking for MPDS 4.1. Add Dialup Networking connection for MPDS 1. Click Start then Programs then Accessories then Communications then Network and Dialup Connections. 2. Select Add New Connection. The following screen appears: -

12 3. Click Next. 4. Click Dialup to the Internet then Next.

13 5. Click I want to set up my Internet connection manually then Next.

14 6. Click I Connect through a phone line and a modem then Next.

15 7. Select the Standard bps Modem configured earlier then click Next.

16 8. Enter any telephone number (this is not used) and de-select Use area code and dialling rules then click Next.

17 9. Enter any user name and password then click Next (note Xantic allows anonymous access so you can enter any alphanumeric username and password).

18 10. Enter a name for the connection e.g. Inmarsat MPDS then click Next.

19 11. Click No then Next.

20 12. De-select the Immediate Connection option then click Finish. The new connection will appear after a short delay.

21 4.2. Set connection properties for MPDS 1. Right-click the connection Inmarsat MPDS and click Properties. The following screen appears: - 2. Highlight Standard bps Modem then click Configure. The following screen appears: -

Ensure the options are set as shown: - Maximum Speed : Automatically detected no need to change Enable hardware flow control : Selected Enable modem error control : Not selected Enable modem compression : Not selected 4. Click OK twice to save settings. 5. The MPDS Connection is now configured and ready to test Testing the MPDS connection 1. Ensure cables are correctly connected between transceiver and antenna. 2. Ensure the serial cable is connected between the PC and the GAN terminal. 3. Ensure the terminal and PC are switched on. 4. Direct the antenna towards the satellite until a signal of at least 54 dbhz is shown on the handset display. 5. Wait for the terminal to do spot beam selection this is indicated when the handset display reads Ready. 6. Open Dialup Networking and select the Inmarsat MPDS connection. The following screen appears: -

23 7. Click Dial. 8. The terminal handset may indicate Registering and MPDS Mode Connected. 9. You should then see the dialup connection made. 10. Test your MPDS connection by starting Internet Explorer and browsing any website. 5. ISDN Configuration 1. Ensure the ISDN port on the GAN terminal is activated - refer to the manual supplied with the GAN terminal for details. 2. Connect the ISDN adaptor to the ISDN port on the GAN terminal using an ISDN cable. 3. Connect the ISDN adaptor to the serial port on the PC using a serial cable. 4. If the terminal adaptor isn t supported directly by AMOS Mail, install any software drivers for the ISDN terminal adaptor and ensure it appears as a modem device in Windows Control Panel.

24 6. AMOS Mail Installation and Configuration 1. Insert the AmosConnect CD and follow the installation procedure described in the AmosConnect Quick Installation Guide Configuring AMOS Mail for GAN-MPDS 1. Start AMOS Mail and log-on as an administrative user (normally ADMIN) with password. 2. From the main menu, select Setup then Remote PO Management 3. Highlight AmosConnect Hub then click Details the following screen appears: - 4. Click Host connected via TCP/IP then Details the following screen appears.

Ensure the following information is entered: - Host password Host(name) Port number : As appropriate must match your account on the hub : tcp1.amosconnect.com (this links to the IP address of the AmosConnect hub) : 1526 (this is the TCP/IP port for AMOS Mail to AMOS Mail communication) Tick the enable logging button if you want to be able to see TCP/IP calls in the Connect Log. 6. Click OK twice then Close. 7. From the main menu select Remote then Other Services. 8. Click the TCP/IP tab: -

26 9. Ensure the following information is entered: - Auto Send Auto Receive Autologon Server PO : Selected : Selected : Selected : AmosConnect hub 10. Click OK 11. From the main menu select File then Exit and Sign Out. This saves all configuration changes Configuring AMOS Mail for GAN-ISDN 1. Ensure any necessary software drivers for your ISDN terminal adaptor are installed and the device appears in Windows Control Panel. 2. When you are prompted to add a new modem device, select Use TAPI device and select the device from the dropdown list

27 3. Type a description then click OK

28 6.3. Accessing AmosConnect hub via the MPDS Channel 1. Establish the MPDS session by opening Dialup Networking and selecting the Inmarsat MPDS connection. The following screen appears: - 2. Click Dial. 3. You should then see the connection made. 4. Start AMOS Mail 5. Click Window then Send Queue. 6. Click TCP/IP. You should see activity on the left side of the screen for example: - TCP connecting to Logged on to <AMOS.> Sending (only if there is to send) Receiving (only if there is to receive) Closing session to

29 7. Test the communication with an end-to-end test i.e. send and receive to and from another Internet address. 7. Accessing AmosConnect via the ISDN Channel 1. Start AMOS Mail and log in as ADMIN using Password you configured earlier. 2. In the AMOS Mail software, click Window then Send Queue. 3. Click Dial and the Dial Remote Post Office dialog will appear: - 4. Ensure the GAN terminal is using LES 012 or 222 (i.e. Xantic). This is necessary because AmosConnect Special Access Code 65 is only accessible via Xantic. 5. Click Connect. You should see activity on the left side of the screen for example: - Line Opened Initializing Modem Calling AmosConnect Hub Phone: 65# Connect Requesting Download End of Output Logged on to <AMOS.> Receiving Status Receiving AMOS End of Input Session Complete Line Closed Important: ensure that Session Complete appears this indicates that the connection was successful i.e. everything to send was sent and everything to receive was received.

30 6. Test the communication with an end-to-end test i.e. send and receive to and from another Internet address. 7. Test the communication to ensure it is reliable and throughput is good. 8.
