2 This is where parents can find out what is going on in their students classes. Grades 5-8 post their classwork, homework, tests and quizzes each day on the calendar. This will function as the class webpage for grades PK - 4. Each grade level will post their newsletter here, have website links, and other important information. The classroom teachers will explain to the parents what will be posted where and when, as this might differ by grade level. There is an LOA ALL group where announcements will be made for all students. This is where you will find the student directory. Please make sure your child joins this group. The Specials teachers have created groups as well. Some teachers have general groups such as General Music, General PE, or The Media Center. These are all groups that your child can request to join. The MCB URL is : Student Login Page Parent Login Page Click here for parent login Students use their firstname.lastname and 6 digits to login. 8 E-Books E-books are electronic books that can be read on any computer. LOA s E-books are hosted by Follett and can be accessed from home, school, or on the road! They are the same as a print book only in digital format. 1. Go to Create a shortcut on your desktop for easier access, or add to your favorites. (Shortcut recommended) Opening page with book titles, Search limiters E-book titles There are two ways to view e-books : online, which is like taking a library book off the shelf and reading it in the library; or to check it out, which gives you aaccess to it for one week. E-books turn themselves back in after 7 days. When you finish reading, you have the option of closing the book or turning it in early. LOA currently has over 300 e-book titles, many of which are nonfiction. They come in all reading levels and present an alternative to print books.
9 E-Books (continued) 3. Hover over the book for a short synopsis. Then, if you decide you want to look at it further, simply click on it to open it. 4. Open the book and begin reading. There are many tools to use with each e-book and include Contents Search options Highlighting Ability to add your own notes View your notebook with your notes Viewing options Page turn Print option We hope you will give the e-books a try! If you have any questions, please contact Lindsay Lipscomb at (706) or lindsay.lipscomb@lakeoconeeacademy.org.
10 B.Y.O.D: Bring Your Own Device LOA is planning to pilot BYOD with grades 5-8 beginning in January Students will be allowed to bring to school devices that are on the LOA BYOD approved list below. There will be a BYOD Acceptable Use Policy that all students will sign which will detail how these devices can be used and liabilities, as the student will be responsible for keeping track of, maintaining, and operating their device. There will be a wifi created for all students to use when bringing their own device, and it will ensure that they are protected in the same way they are when logging onto a school computer. We envision having a session before school begins where students can bring their device to school and make sure it works properly with the VMWare View Virtual Desktop and school wifi. Recommended tablets Apple: Apple ipad 2 or newer (but not the ipad mini) with Bluetooth keyboard WiFi only Microsoft: Microsoft Surface tablet (RT or Windows 8 or 8.1) with Bluetooth keyboard WiFi only Android: Amazon Kindle Fire HD or HDX 8.9 with Bluetooth keyboard WiFi only Samsung Galaxy Tab with Bluetooth keyboard WiFi only We ve recommended these tablets because they all have a screen size large enough to use the VMware Horizon View client efficiently and because they all have dual-band wireless (a/b/g/n). You are welcome to choose another brand of tablet if desired. Please do not purchase devices with 3g or 4g support. We are also requiring that a Bluetooth keyboard be purchased for the tablet. Here are the required features for tablets: Screen size of 9 or better Dual-band wireless (a/b/g/n a/b/g/n/ac is also acceptable) WiFi only (no 3g or 4g) Bluetooth keyboard VMware Horizon View client for tablet OS Recommended laptops Any Apple MacBook (WiFi only) Any dual-band wireless (a/b/g/n) Windows laptop (WiFi only) Unsupported Devices We will not support these devices for BYOD: Smartphones/cellphones ipods Netbooks Gaming devices
