13 International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Thuraya has a longstanding relationship with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to provide free or subsidized communication services in countries affected by natural disasters. Thuraya has worked closely with a number of governments in afflicted countries, through our local Service Partners, to provide our services in aid of disaster recovery communications. A key example of our work includes deploying the Thuraya XT handsets in support of emergency communications in Japan, immediately after the earthquake and tsunami in March Thuraya also supported ITU teams in China, Indonesia, Samoa, Malawi and Turkey. Nature Iraq, Tigris River Flotilla Thuraya ReliefComms is supporting Nature Iraq to raise awareness of the conservation of natural resources and cultural heritage of the Tigris and Euphrates River Valley. Thuraya sponsored the team with the Thuraya IP+ broadband terminal as well as airtime to help them stay connected as they embark on their inaugural journey down the river. The project seeks to showcase the importance of the Tigris River as well as connect conservation issues with daily life and spur more people to take action towards conserving this vital waterway, rebuilding its community and ecosystem. NetHope Thuraya partnered with the international humanitarian agency, NetHope to provide communication services in the Philippines, soon after Typhoon Bopha destroyed terrestrial communications networks in the country. Thuraya s donation of satellite communications equipment helped more than a dozen NGOs and local agencies that were leading the disaster recovery efforts in the most adversely affected province of Davao Oriental.
