1353 GEM Optical Network Element Manager
Managing today s networks can be a challenging and sometimes demanding job. As network elements and the topologies they support become more complex, service providers need a network management solution that provides flexibility, control, reliability, and ease of use.
INNOVATIVE AND FLEXIBLE ELEMENT MANAGEMENT WITH THE ALCATEL 1353 GEM Feature Overview The Alcatel 1353 GEM is one of the industry s most innovative and flexible element management solutions. Ideal for add/dropmultiplexers, digital cross-connects, optical cross-connects, next-generation SONET multiservice, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, and SONET microwave transmission systems, the 1353 GEM is backed by Alcatel s long standing reputation and experience in building end-to-end carrier-class solutions. It is designed with a full complement of management features for monitoring, reporting, and implementing new services into your network. centralized operation center. Technicians can complete their jobs quickly and efficiently; reducing the time spent on routine and complicated tasks. Managing, monitoring and implementing new services into your network can be difficult and can present some challenges for service providers. With Alcatel as your partner, it doesn t have to be a difficult task. Look to Alcatel for all your network telecommunications needs. We provide end-toend carrier-class solutions for use on land, undersea, and around the globe. Compliant with the ITU-T Telecommunication Management Network and the TeleManagement Forum principles, the Alcatel 1353 GEM enables you to dynamically configure and monitor multiple network elements from a Product Features Summary Increase productivity Monitor network performance Control access Simplify integration > Easy-to-use graphical user interface simplifies navigation and access with features such as point-andclick maps, pull down menus and on-line help. > The configuration management feature allows for remote setup, initialization, and modification of equipment parameters from one centralized location. > Quickly and easily set up and modify complex cross-connects. > Access, evaluate, and set thresholds of remote network elements with the 1353 GEM s performance monitoring feature. > The fault management feature provides real-time network resource information. > The security management feature protects data integrity and prevents unauthorized user access. > Northbound interfaces allow the 1353 GEM to integrate into a service provider s operations support system (OSS) ALCATEL 1 >
PRODUCT FEATURES Increase Productivity The Alcatel 1353 GEM is designed with the tools needed to help you quickly assess network conditions, implement solutions with ease, and work as efficiently as possible. Access to the network elements can be from a central network operations center (NOC) or other remote location. Its user interface is a feature-rich graphical interface that speeds the process of many network management tasks. It includes network topology maps, point-and-click capabilities, and an enhanced on-line help feature. The network topology maps provide clear graphics of your network and its multiple elements. To ensure you see exactly what you need, the map design can be customized to suit individual operator preference. The graphical view of the network elements offers a quasiphotographic picture at the highest level. From here, you can easily navigate down to the shelf view of a particular network element. This view provides detailed, easy-to-analyze information regarding the status of the network element. Additionally, all map levels show alarm information. Point-and-click capabilities ensure that the user interface is easy to use. By allowing you to quickly access element information or perform a task without having to type a command, the Alcatel 1353 GEM can increase your personal accuracy and efficiency. However, for those who prefer, TL1 commands may still be typed, recalled and edited, or saved in a script format for future use. The craft terminal interface is the same as that of the 1353 GEM, allowing a person in the NOC to share the same view as field personnel. Productivity increases with the Alcatel 1353 GEM s context-sensitive on-line help. Always available, the on-line help feature provides valuable information such as the definition of an alarm, a probable cause, and suggested solution. Also, a complete set of product documentation is available via Alcatel s on-line support. The Alcatel 1353 GEM s configuration management feature saves time and money by allowing setup, initialization, and modification of equipment parameters from one central location. Through a graphical interface, users view network equipment status and can provide any necessary support or required modifications. > 2 ALCATEL
A network element map graphically represents elements on the network, and users simply click on an element icon to access the shelf view of that desired network element. At this level the status of each shelf slot and card is visible and parameters can be set up or modified. With this powerful tool, you can manage the network from one single location rather than traveling to multiple equipment sites. Productivity increases because time is spent resolving network issues rather than traveling to them. The Alcatel 1353 GEM simplifies the everyday tasks associated with maintaining complex cross-connects. Supporting one-way, two-way, roll, and conference cross-connect facilities, this feature enables you to quickly create, modify, display, and delete cross-connects through pointand-click functionality. The 1353 GEM's ring management feature provides users with the ability to configure rings and subnetworks. Users can create, manage, or delete ring configurations or subnetwork connections on a per-ring basis. Alcatel's ring management feature supports UPSR and BLSR protection schemes and manages the SONET resources at the STS-n and VT1.5 level. Further it supports virtual concatenation if supported by the supervised network element. The ring management feature provides a graphical view of subnetwork connections through actual ring nodes as well as the ring view itself. This allows for easy navigation and access to summary information on the node, including the type of cross-connection and end points. Quickly assess network conditions Easily implement solutions Work as efficiently as possible ALCATEL 3 >
Performance and fault management to assist with all immediate and regularly-scheduled network monitoring activities Monitor Network Performance Equipped with performance monitoring and fault management features, the Alcatel 1353 GEM is the right network element manager to assist with all your immediate and regularly scheduled network monitoring activities. Service providers can access performance monitoring data and evaluate the status of elements in their network. This also allows you to evaluate and set resource performance thresholds. Under-utilization can be identified or if a preset threshold is crossed, and generates an alarm. The Alcatel 1353 GEM fault management feature is an innovative solution that allows supervision and real-time status information of your network resources. It also allows you to retrieve and view current network element alarm(s) status, enable and disable alarms, set alarm severity levels, filter alarms, and hand-over alarms to an external OSS. A must-have tool, the 1353 GEM fault management feature empowers service providers to closely monitor the health of their networks and ensure customer satisfaction. > 4 ALCATEL
Protect data integrity and control network access Control Access The Alcatel 1353 GEM s robust security management feature allows service providers to protect data integrity and control network access. All unauthorized user access can be eliminated. User access rights are specified through two areas, Functional Access Domains (FADs) and Network Access Domains (NADs). The FAD identifies an operator s level of access according to a predetermined set of parameters and can be application specific. The NAD allows for partitioning and access to network elements based on geography and assigns operators rights to specified geographical areas. ALCATEL 5 >
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE Supported Network Elements The 1353 GEM supports the following Alcatel network elements: > SONET add/drop multiplexers > SONET cross-connects > Next-generation SONET multi-service > Optical cross-connects > Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems > High and medium capacity SONET microwave systems Software Architecture The Alcatel 1353 GEM is based on the Alcatel Management Platform (ALMAP). This platform of generic components, common to all Alcatel network management applications, addresses functional domains such as; alarm surveillance, fault management, security, system management, and topology views. Further, northbound interfaces are available from the 1353 GEM to integrate into your network management system or operations support system. Formats include ASCII, SNMP, and CORBA (future in accordance with the TMF 814 standard). > 6 ALCATEL
Hardware Architecture For new installations, a scalable HP UNIX platform (such as the RP5470, RP2430, or RP7410 server) is required. Processing capacity, internal memory, disk space, peripheral devices, and the number of local and remote users can grow as your network requires. For customers with existing platforms, please consult with your Alcatel sales representative. The Alcatel 1353 GEM application software can be viewed on a PC running Hummingbird Exceed or GoGlobal software. ALCATEL 7 >
