2 1. Introduction There are several kinds of cardbus 3G modems available for connecting to a 3G network. UC-7400/IA241 serials support some of these brands. They can be controlled through /dev/ttyusb0 or /dev/noz0. Vodafone 3G data card, Global Trotter 3G, Novatel V620, NVM-U740 and Huawei E612 are controlled through /dev/ttyusb0 device nodes and Vodafone Mobile Connect HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE datacard, Swisscom Unlimited 5-in-1 are controlled through /dev/noz0. By configuring the pppd dial-out script, UC-7400/IA-241 serials can connect to Internet.

3 2. Plug the 3G Card into Cardbus Slot. UC-7400/IA241 serials support hot-plug features. When the 3G card inserted, Moxa embedded computer will detect this card. You can enter dmesg to look the kernel ring buffer message. PS: This example is the Global Trotter Fusion detected message, for different cards these messages will slightly different. These messages imply that the UC-7420 cardbus can detect this machine. If you do not look these messages, it means that the cardbus slot would have some problems. NOTE When the card plug into card bus slot, your SIM will ask for the PIN code before it will do anything else. You can use minicom or Hyper terminal on a host computer to disable it. Enter the AT+CLCK command. AT+CLCK="SC",0,"XXXX" (replacing xxxx with your own PIN) to turn off the PIN question. This way, your UMTS card will start searching for a network immediately. To turn the PIN question on again, type AT+CLCK="SC",1,"XXXX" and to check if it's on or off, type AT+CLCK="SC",2 if it says "+CLCK: 0" the PIN is off, if it says "+CLCK: 1" the PIN is on.

5 NOTE The dial-out script uses /etc/ppp/ppp-umts.chat to chat with 3G card, you would need to modified this file for your need. The default SVN server in this chat script is internet. This value would be different of every network service provider. You need to give the right SVN server for the card to connect to Vodafone Mobile Connect HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE datacard and Swisscom Unlimited 5-in-1 The Vodafone Mobile Connect HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE datacard and Swisscom Unlimited 5-in-1 datacard can start the ppp connection by /etc/init.d/3g.sh nozomi start After the connection established, you can type ifconfig check the ppp0 interface. 4. Testing the ppp connection You can ping an Internet server to check if this connection can connection to the Internet.

7 5.2. Vodafone Mobile Connect HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE datacard and Swisscom Unlimited 5-in-1 The ppp connection can be stop by /etc/init.d/3g.sh nozomi stop 6. Unplug the card Finally, you can unplug the card from UC/IA.
