3 INTRODUCTION This guide describes how to connect to the Internet using a Novatel Wireless Merlin U730/U740 PC Card modem and a Apple PowerBook with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger The Novatel Wireless Merlin U730/U740 enables you to connect to a 3G service provider and the Internet. The modem provides reliable wireless data communications with average speeds between 400 and 700 kbps and easily installs in any PowerBook Type II PCMCIA slot. REQUIREMENTS Before you can connect to a HSDPA service provider with a Novatel Wireless Merlin U730/U740 modem, you will need the following: Novatel Wireless Merlin U740 or U730 PC Card modem and an activated SIM card Apple PowerBook with Type II PC Card slot with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger UMTS/HSDPA account with a service provider Configuration information from your service provider such as username, password, APN, and DNS addresses. SETTING UP YOUR EQUIPMENT 1. Power on your Apple PowerBook computer. 2. Install driver and modem script by launching Merlin HSDPA (U730 U740).pkg 3. Verify that the SIM card is inserted properly in the modem 4. Insert the modem into the PowerBook PC Card (PCMCIA) slot. 2006, Novatel Wireless Inc. All rights reserved. Pg. 3 of 10

4 SET THE NETWORK CONNECTION SETTINGS In this step, you will set the TCP/IP, PPP, and Modem network connection settings. 1. Make sure the card is completely inserted into the PC Card slot. 2. Launch System Preferences from the Apple ( ) menu. 3. Click the Network icon in the System Preferences window. 2006, Novatel Wireless Inc. All rights reserved. Pg. 4 of 10

5 4. If this is the first time you insert your modem in the computer, a notification window will alert you that there was a New Port Detected and that it is a Novatel Wireless HSDPA Modem. Press OK to dismiss the notification. 5. Choose the Novatel Wireless HSPDA Modem menu item under the Show menu. 2006, Novatel Wireless Inc. All rights reserved. Pg. 5 of 10

6 6. With the PPP tab selected, enter your Account Name and Password in the appropriate blanks as shown in the figure below (as applicable). Next enter your APN in the Telephone Number blank even though the APN is not a phone number. These values correspond to the user name, password, and APN supplied to you by your service provider. 7 7. Click the PPP Options... button. Change the settings to match what is shown below. (Note: You might need to turn off IP header compression for some carrier networks.) Click OK and the view will be reverted back to the Network window 2006, Novatel Wireless Inc. All rights reserved. Pg. 7 of 10

9 OPEN AN INTERNET CONNECTION 1. Click the Phone icon located in the menu bar to display the Connect menu 2. Click Open Internet Connect... The Connect dialog box is displayed. Click the Connect button. The modem will attempt to register with the service provider. The status bar message indicates the connection s status Status: Contacting PPP Server While a connection is being made, the status bar message is Status: Authenticating User When a connection is made, the status bar message is Status: Connected to and the Connect Time, and IP Address are indicated. 10 SURF THE INTERNET Once you are connected to the Internet, you can use your regular Internet browser (eg. Safari, Firefox, Mail, ichat) to surf the Internet, check , VPN, etc. DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET To disconnect from the Internet click on the Phone icon in the menu bar and click Disconnect.
