4 1. Introduction The IDS Modem provides a means for security companies to set up the configuration of client s alarm panels on the bench, and maintain them via a fixed line telephone network. The modem will work with all IDS Alarm Panels except the IDS IDS816EX and IDS1632 Alarm Panels can download/upload at 900bps. Remote updating and modifying client s Alarm Panel configuration is performed using IDS download Software for MS Windows. 2. Minimum System Requirements IBM PC MS Windows XP Service Pack 1 or later 1 free Com Port or 1 free USB port IDS Download Software version 3.18 or later Access to telephone line pair 3. Specifications Line Interface V.21 compliant (300bps) when uploading/downloading from IDS 816 Alarm Panels 900bps (propriety) capability when uploading/downloading from IDS 816EX and IDS 1632 Alarm Panels. NOTE: The IDS Modem will NOT work with the IDS1600 Alarm Panels - these require a standard commercial modem. PC Interface USB driver software is provided to permit the device to operate via the PCs USB port. 4. Installation There is a choice of standard Serial Port operation or USB operation. It is not possible to operate using both Serial and USB options simultaneously. Choose the option that suits the installation and follow the directions accordingly. 4.1 Serial Port Option The Modem can connect to the serial port of the PC and the system will work without any need for additional drivers. Just plug in the power cable and connect the Serial Cable. USB port operation requires the installation of the USB driver: IDS Modem B Issued January

5 4.2 USB Driver Installation 1. Unplug everything from the modem. 2. Make sure you have the inhmod.inf file copied into a directory on the PC where you can navigate to during the installation process. 3. Plug in the power cable, one of the three LEDs should flash continuously. 4. Plug in the USB cable (From PC to Modem). The following should appear on the PC screen: 5. 6 You should then see the following: 6. Choose Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click <Next>. The following should appear: 7. Choose Search for the best driver in these locations. IDS Modem B Issued January

7 8. Only tick the Include this location in the search box. 9. Click Browse and navigate to the folder that contains the inhmod.inf file (the directory that you copied it into in step 2 on page 4). 10. Click <Next> and Windows installs the software. During the installation you will get a warning message: 7 IDS Modem B Issued January 2009

8 11. Ignore this warning, click <Continue Anyway>. 12. The installation process is now finished, click on <Finish>. 5. Testing USB Device Detection 1. Go to the windows control panel and click System Hardware Device Manager and expand the Ports (COM & LPT) option. 2. Plugging and unplugging the USB cable from the Modem should cause a COM port to appear and disappear in the list. (Make a note of which COM port it is.) NOTE: If the allocated COM port is an unreasonably high number, right-click on it and select Properties. Then click Port Settings Advanced and use the COM Port Number drop-down list to choose a more appropriate number. Always use the same port. 6. Configuring IDS Download Software 1. Run the IDS Download Software 2. Click Settings Modem 3. Set Modem Type to Custom Modem 4. Set Com Port to the port number noted 5. String 1 field: blank 6. String 2 field: blank 7. Modem volume: L0 8. Dial type: as appropriate 9. Blind dial: yes 10. Send init strings on each connect: yes 11. Double Dial time: 5 IDS Modem B Issued January
