2 Bronze Star & Basic First Aid with CPR A Bronze Star Bronze Star is the pre-bronze Medallion training standard and it is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving skills individually and in partners. They learn how to keep a cool head and take charge in an emergency. Includes a 400 metre timed swim. Basic First Aid- CPR A This course gives students basic knowledge of first aid techniques that will assist in their rescues as well as every day minor scenarios. The focus is on remaining calm and acting quickly in first aid emergencies. Students will learn rescue breathing techniques as well as choking rescues as well as CPR skills. As personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for use and evaluated in both programs, a key chain face shield and gloves has been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate on the first class. Prerequisite(s): Minimum age of 11 years and completed Zodiac Swim 12 or equivalent. 100% attendance is required for successful completion of the course. Course Cost: $375 incl. The course stresses the responsibility undertaken by these group leaders for safeguarding the young people in their care even when under lifeguard supervision. Safeguard focuses on water safety awareness, accident prevention and the principles of aquatic safety supervision. Safeguard teaches participants how to identify hazards and at-risk behaviours, how to recognize potential victims, and how to respond safely in an aquatic emergency. Safeguard training is designed for swimmers and non-swimmers alike. Successful completion of the course is based on active participation in all sessions and evidence of the Must Sees in each item. Prerequisites: Guardians must be at least 12 years of age AND comfortable in and around the water. 3 Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid-CPR B Bronze Medallion This course offers an understanding of lifesaving principles contained in the 4 components of water-rescue education: judgment, fitness, knowledge and skill. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defense methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Emergency First Aid-CPR B This course gives students general knowledge of first aid principles to increase confidence in order to effectively manage an emergency, without panic or confusion. The focus is on providing first aid for common injuries and core skills to reduce shock. In addition, the students learn to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies that occur in adults, children and infants. As personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for use and evaluated in both programs a CPR mask and gloves has been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate on the first class along with their required text, The Canadian Lifesaving Manual. 4 Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid-CPR C Bronze Cross Bronze Cross is the next level in the lifesaving chain. This course will bring you one step closer to becoming a certified Instructor and/or Lifeguard. Bronze Cross builds upon the foundation established in Bronze Medallion and teaches more complex and advanced lifesaving skills, for example the difference between a lifesaver and lifeguard is outlined and deep water spinal injury management. Standard First Aid-CPR C This course provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all of the Emergency First Aid content and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat and cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns and medical emergencies. It provides knowledge of how the heart works and what goes wrong when defibrillation is required. Candidates will learn when and how to operate a public access defibrillator. Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion AND Emergency First Aid-CPR B Required Materials: The Canadian Lifesaving Manual, CPR mask, gloves 100% attendance is required for successful completion of the course. Candidates are required to perform to Bronze Cross standards in a practical examination. Candidates must complete the 600m swim in 18 minutes or less and perform the required skills and rescues. 5 Distinction The Distinction Award encourages a maturity of response to demanding aquatic emergency situations and is designed to develop advanced water rescue skill and knowledge, and an understanding of the principles of fitness training. Distinction challenges include implications of assuming responsibility in an emergency, how to deal with two victims at once, and rescue of a non-breathing spinal-injured victim. Inherent in the name of the award lifesavers must perform every item with distinction. This award is an effective way to build new skills and maintain your swim fitness level while waiting to take your National Lifeguard course. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross Required Materials: The Canadian Lifesaving Manual, CPR mask, gloves Candidates will be required to bring a clean long-sleeve shirt, pants and shoes that will be worn into the pool to complete specific course components. 7 National Lifeguard (NLS) Recertification The Lifesaving Society s National Lifeguard certification is Canada s professional lifeguard standard. The purpose of an NLS Recert is to reconfirm that National Lifeguards can perform at the NLS standard. The NL training program requires the following items to be evaluated on every recertification: The following 3 Physical Standards will be covered during the exam: Item 2a Object recovery, Item 2c Sprint challenge, Item 2e Endurance challenge Required Materials: Whistle, CPR mask, gloves Proof of original certification must be presented at the course. 8 Assistant Instructor Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and assistants are emphasized. Prerequisites: 14 years of age AND Bronze Cross Required Materials: The Canadian Lifesaving Manual (If a candidate does not have this manual, it can be purchased from Zodiac at time of registration) 100% attendance is required for successful completion of the course. Proof of prerequisites must be presented at the course. Course Cost: $350 incl. HST Swim Instructor November 11 th, 18 th & 25 th Sundays 10:30 am - 6 pm This course prepares candidates to teach and evaluate basic swim strokes and related skills. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques. Candidates participate in both classroom and water sessions developing skills in the areas of class management, planning, evaluation, leadership, communication and administration. Current Swim Instructors teach and certify candidates in all levels of the Zodiac Swim Program. 10 Zodiac Swim Instructor Transfer Course A Zodiac Swim School and Lifesaving Society Program The Swim Instructor Transfer Course teaches current experienced, certified instructors of other agencies learn-to-swim programs how to deliver the Zodiac Swim Program. It teaches candidates how to apply their existing knowledge and skills to this program. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to perform all of the current Zodiac Swim stroke standards, skills and Swim to Survive items. Candidates are evaluated through this practical performance. As the Zodiac Swim Award Guide and Teaching Swim for Life manual are required for use in the Zodiac Swim Instructor Transfer Course, these books have been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate at the course. Candidates will receive the Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification after successful completion of this course. Prerequisite: 16 years of age AND Bronze Cross or higher AND other agency learn-to-swim instructor certification (i.e. Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, YMCA Instructor) Required Materials: Whistle Note: This course does NOT recertify the Lifesaving Swim Instructor award. 11 Examiner Course Examiners are experienced instructors who undergo specific training in examination methodology and standards prior to certification. Examiner candidates must have teaching experience: they must have taught or co-taught at least one course in the stream(s) in which they are seeking certification. The Examiner course builds on the evaluation experience that candidates have attained in instructor-evaluated awards and content. Certification as an Examiner is a three-step process: 1. Course successfully complete an Examiner course (this course) 2. Apprenticeship successfully apprentice under the supervision of an experienced Examiner Mentor on one exam in the stream(s) in which they are seeking certification as an examiner 3. Certification submit the completed Examiner Training Record and the certification fee to the Society Prerequisite: must have taught or co-taught at least one course for which certification is sought Required Materials: Award Guide for each certification that candidate wishes to examine (i.e. if you wish to examine Bronze Medallion you must have the Bronze Medals Award Guide at the course), Canadian Lifesaving Manual, Instructor Manual Course Cost: $100 incl. Candidates will be introduced the responsibilities required to act as an Aquatic Supervisor understanding that safety is the supervisors key responsibility and function. Prerequisites: National Lifeguard OR Swim Instructor OR Lifesaving Instructor certification; AND a letter from an employer confirming 100 hours of experience as a lifeguard and/or instructor. 12 IMPORTANT PRE-COURSE INFORMATION! Pre-course Assignment: The courses below require the completion of a pre-course assignment. Candidates will need to arrange for pick-up or delivery of the course materials two weeks prior to the first class to allow for completion of the assignment. National Lifeguard Instructor This course is designed to provide candidates with an understanding of the expectations and requirements to teach the National Lifeguard program. The class room and pool sessions allow participants to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, teaching and evaluation skills. The National Lifeguard Instructor course provides candidates with an understanding of the principles and practices on which the National Lifeguard program is based. The course explores teaching approaches and techniques appropriate for National Lifeguard candidates. Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be certified NL Instructors. NL Instructors must then co-teach/examine with an experienced NL Instructor to achieve NL Examiner appointment. The number of successful co-teaches/examinations required is at the discretion of the Area Chair. A minimum of 1 co-exam is required. The NL Examiner candidate must submit their successfully completed application for NL examiner appointment to the relevant Area Chair for consideration. All required Lifesaving Society reference materials have been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate at the first class. 13 Lifesaving Instructor Trainer Course Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainers (ITs) teach, evaluate and certify Instructor candidates. ITs are experienced and knowledgeable Instructors, Examiners or Coaches who undergo specific training in teaching instructors. Trainer candidates must have teaching experience: they must have taught or co-taught at least one course in the stream(s) in which they are seeking appointment as a Trainer. Appointment as a Trainer is a three-step process: 1. Course successfully complete the Trainer course (this course) 2. Apprenticeship successfully apprentice by practice teaching on one instructor course with an experienced instructor (for each stream in which they are seeking certification as an examiner) 3. Appointments submit the completed Trainer Training Record and the certification fee to the Society The Trainer course provides candidates with an understanding of the expectations and requirements to teach instructors, and prepares participants to successfully apprentice as a Trainer on the Instructor course(s) of their choice. It shapes positive attitudes and values about the Society s Instructor Training Program, planning, learning/teaching and evaluation content and allows participants to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, teaching and evaluation techniques.
