2 Tomorrow s Technology is Here Today For a competitive and sustainable economy, the United States must have a skilled and well-trained workforce that can meet current and evolving industry needs. Students must acquire problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, in addition to jobrelated expertise, to reach their full potential in their careers. The growth of global networks has resulted in a shortage of people qualified to manage the information infrastructure needed to operate, manufacture, support communications, and even save lives. Every business, school, hospital, nonprofit, and other organization that relies on intelligent networks needs trained professionals to keep them running and secure. A workforce that is well-schooled in ICT and engineering can spur innovation across many industries, which in turn inspires new opportunities to fuel productivity and economic growth. ICT investments play a major role in generating stable, highpaying jobs and boosting the nation s GDP. An Innovative Program that Supports Education Standards Cisco Networking Academy is a technology education program that partners with public and private organizations to provide the knowledge and skills required for career-ready students. Students acquire basic-to-advanced ICT and networking expertise. They develop the analysis, teamwork, and efficiency skills that are essential in the 21st century, both in college and in their careers. Networking Academy courses reflect all Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Cluster Topics, and teach many of the reading and writing Common Core State Standards for technical subjects. Students strengthen their understanding of technology, math, science, and engineering concepts, improving success in their advanced studies and preparing for globally-recognized certification exams. Technical and Career-Ready Skills Courses include IT Essentials, Cisco CCNA (Cisco Certified Networking Associate) Routing and Switching, CCNA Security, and Cisco CCNP (Cisco Certified Networking Professional). Supplemental courses cover healthcare ICT, voice, cloud, and more. The instructional approach encourages student engagement, and the ability to synthesize what they learn to apply it in other contexts. Courses integrate four skill areas identified as critical for 21st century professionals: Problem solving and decision making: Students practice and test their knowledge by configuring and troubleshooting networks using hands-on labs and simulation software; real-world scenarios develop advanced problem solving techniques. Creative and critical thinking: Students understand the how and why of networking by combining hands-on learning with conceptual and analytical exercises. Collaboration, communication, and negotiation: Students acquire teamwork skills by working on group projects. Intellectual curiosity and information handling: Students develop the ability to locate, select, structure, evaluate, and present information. Courses prepare and motivate students to pursue further education, earn industry certifications, embark on or strengthen a career, and become entrepreneurs Cisco and/or its affiliates. 3 Comprehensive Curricula and Communities of Support Each course is free to not-for-profit organizations, and provides instructor-led course content, lab exercises, simulation software, skills assessments, case studies, gaming, interactive teaching guides, and grade books. All materials are available to instructors online with 24-hour support. Unique to Networking Academy is our focus on instructor professional development, and the creation of communities to support both instructors and students. Instructors receive training prior to teaching their first class, and free professional development opportunities throughout the year. Cisco hosts peer communities that enable instructors to collaborate and share best practices online and in person. Students have access to skills competitions, and a global network of peers to mentor each other through coursework and exam preparation. ICT Skills in High Demand ICT professionals enjoy a continuously increasing demand because of exponential growth in technology hardware and services. The program leaders have intentionally created a learning environment that not only produces outstanding graduates, but develops the next generation of academy teachers as well. Instructor advocacy continues to play a key role in academy program sustainability and growth. At first, the Networking Academy program at UC Clermont was not expanding as quickly as anticipated. So the administrators set out to recruit passionate instructors to increase enrollment and develop students who could fill more of the network engineering positions available with regional employers Cisco and/or its affiliates. 6 New instructors brought new ideas. Initially the academy classrooms had no tables or desks, only chairs. These were arranged in pods, and the students were asked to be responsible for each other s success. Part of their grade reflects demonstration of support for their classmates. If one student finishes a lab early, they are expected to stay and help anyone else who isn t yet finished. This way, students learn to watch out for and communicate with each other. Collaboration replaces competition. Everybody wins. Another paradigm shift: instead of trying to weed out students who weren t up for the challenge, instructors looked for ways to awaken a passion for networking in students who might not yet know much about it. The field of IT and networking needs all kinds of people, and offers UC Clermont graduates a range of prosperous careers--reason enough to encourage every student to succeed. Program leaders also work hard to bring more young women into the program. One female student with many responsibilities at home was ready to withdraw because she felt overwhelmed. Everyone in the class reached out to encourage her to stay. They offered to help her study, give her rides to school, etc. With this support from her classmates, she decided not to quit. She graduated and found a good job in the field. No single instructor had the power to convince her to stay, but the entire class provided the resources she needed to succeed. UC Clermont academy instructors find that team spirit helps more students achieve their potential, and that learning to work as a team also makes graduates better employees. Collaboration is essential in today s world. No professional working alone can have all of the expertise needed to solve network problems. Customers expect efficient collaboration and brain-storming. High achievers who don t know how to ask for help can burn out from the pace and pressure. Good teamwork always elevates the results. Another outcome of team-focused learning: identifying teaching talent in students. Cindy Scibelli, academy instructor, observed students interacting in pods, and became aware of who the natural teachers were. Although she had no mandate to develop new teaching talent, she viewed it as a responsibility. There is such a desperate shortage of good teachers in math, science, and technology. Everyone has to do their part to cultivate the next generation of teachers. And I found many of them right in my classrooms. One of her students, Rick Stumm, tutored classmates who needed extra help. I had a lot of patience and the ability to put technical concepts into terms that were easier to understand. I had previously worked in a factory, and if anyone had told me that I d end up being a teacher, I would have laughed. But now I teach Cisco NetAcad courses and I can t think of a more gratifying career. Another promising student named Jeremy was a natural teacher, and became an adjunct instructor in the Networking Academy program at an early age. A student named Daniel was always first up at the board to draw tough concepts for his classmates. He emerged early as a networking superstar. Rick said, Daniel passed every one of his written certifications on his first try, and still in his early twenties, he s already working on his CCIE exam. Most important, he loves to teach. He may end up working in industry, but I m sure he ll continue to teach part time or help out as a student mentor. Another student, Eric, was always pestering his instructors to show him what came next while the other students were finishing the current section. Even though he was ahead of the others, he also spent time with anyone who needed help. Teamwork in education helps shape who you are as a person and a professional. Last year the Networking Academy program at UC Clermont celebrated its 10th anniversary. Currently, there are more than 60 students enrolled in CCNA Routing and Switching, and another 40 enrolled in CCNP. Cindi says, Our students have the potential to graduate with three highly marketable industry certifications. We have boot camp preparation over holiday breaks and throughout the year to help our students prepare for the certification exams. One hundred percent of our graduates get jobs, and 90 percent of those jobs are in the technology field. Rick says, This is one of the few two-year programs with a strong, dependable return on investment for students. Students have obtained jobs after their first year, and continued their education while working. Students who are now working in the field come back to recruit new students for their companies Cisco and/or its affiliates. Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 6 of 7
7 One employer called for advice on how to write a recruiting ad to attract academy students. Local businesses love our program, and want to hire our students even before they re certified. That s the kind of reputation we enjoy. And how many teachers have the satisfaction of knowing their students will graduate with a virtual guarantee of getting a good job? UC Clermont academy leaders know it can be hard to find people to teach in IT and networking, because instructor salaries aren t always competitive with industry salaries. But they have not lost an instructor recently for this reason. UC Clermont instructors do this because they love to teach and want to contribute to their community. They know that without their efforts, there won t be a next generation of qualified networking engineers, or a next generation of inspirational instructors. Cisco Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Cisco CSR efforts are managed across five areas, as illustrated here. Cisco Networking Academy is one of Cisco s CSR Society programs in education. Cisco In-Kind Contribution Value (IKCV) is comprised of product donations and pro bono service capabilities. Cisco assesses IKCV at fair market value, defined by the IRS as the price that inventory, products, or certain professional services would garner on the open market between a company and its direct customers/clients.
