1 GUIDELINES FOR EXAM CANDIDATES AT UNIVERSITY OF NORDLAND These guidelines are supplementary provisions to The Regulations Concerning Studies and exams at University of Nordland. Decided upon by The Board of University of Nordland on 15 th June 2004 and revised by way of the rector s decision on 19 th May The regulations entered into force from study start autumn The institution s name was changed from Bodø University College to University of Nordland by way of the rector s decision 63/10 on the 28 th December The guidelines have later been revised by way of the rector s decision in May INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL EXAM UNDER SUPERVISION The start of the exam 1. The exam candidate must be seated in the exam premises at the latest 15 minutes before the exam begins. It is not allowed to enter the exam premises after hours. Candidates who come after this point of time must apply to The Exams Office (or the invigilator in the foajé of Mørkved Hall (Mørkvedhallen). The exam papers are distributed when all candidates have sat down in their places. The candidates are not to have with them other things than things to write with, allowed aids, food and drink at their allocated place. Mobile telephones are not allowed to be used during the exam. This means that candidates cannot keep mobile telephones on their person in jacket or trouser pockets. Mobile telephones are to be switched off and placed in or together with handbags, sacks, bags, and outdoor clothing and put in the place designated in the premises. Candidates who have been given exam papers cannot leave the exam premises before the candidate list has been signed, and at the earliest after 30 minutes. 2. Valid legitimation must be shown before the student enters the exam premises. Exam candidates without valid legitimation will be shown away from the exam. External candidates must show legitimation including a photo and a receipt of the paid semester registration fee. Candidates must have their student cards available on their exam desks during the whole exam for inspection purposes. 3. Exam candidates coming too late to the exam must apply to The Exams Office, through an invigilator, in order possibly to be given permission to take the exam. No extra time is given to candidates coming too late to the exam. 1
2 Exam sheets of paper Behaviour 4. University of Nordland uses normal exam sheets of paper with penetration. The answer is to be written using a ballpoint pen or a hard felt tip pen so that the copies are readable. The candidate is given 15 minutes extra time to fill in the heading and sort the pages. The originals and the first copy are to be stapled together separately and delivered, whereas the final copy is kept by the candidate himself/herself. If there is not enough time and rough copy sheets of paper are delivered, one cannot expect these to be copied and sent on the examiners. 5. The heading on the exam sheets is to be filled out completely. It is not permitted to start writing on sheets of paper before the exam papers have been distributed. Candidates delivering empty answers must deliver a set of exam copies (white and yellow) on which the heading is filled out completely. 6. During the exam any contact between candidates is forbidden, and one is not allowed to leave one s place without the permission of an invigilator. The candidate must do what the invigilator indicates. All questions during the exam must be directed to the invigilators. 7. During the exam it is not permitted for an exam candidate to sit in the university canteens, but the person concerned can shop there. It is not permitted to shop in other kiosks or shops. Neither is it permitted for to use a telephone during the exam. Breaks should be of the briefest duration possible in deference to other candidates wishing to leave the premises. Aids during the exam 8. The exam candidate must him-/herself take her writing materials and the exam aids permitted during the exam, and is responsible for the aids not including illegal notes. Besides the aids one is permitted to have during the exam in question, the candidate must not have or use reading materials of any kind during the exam. Loan of permitted aids from one candidate to another should be avoided. The invigilator decides whether a loan can take place. Possession/use of illegal aids after the exam has been started is regarded as cheating. 9. If permission has been given to use a PC during the exam, the exam responsible person has the right to control that only the necessary software/programmes are available on the hard disk or available storing media (memory sticks etc. ) 10. The candidate stores his/her answer on the area shown on the hard disk. 11. The university is not responsible for loss of text, data following electricity cuts or errors on the machine. The candidate must him/herself take necessary safety copies along the way. 2
3 12. In cases of PC usage exam delivery is usually to be delivered as a print-out with the candidate s number added. The student has the responsibility for delivered material (also electronic material) being marked with the candidate number. Handing in the exam 13. Candidates wishing to deliver their answers remain sitting in their places until the exam papers have been handed in and controlled, and are then to leave the exam premises immediately. HOME EXAM/DELIVERY USING FRONTER (UiN s Learning management system) This may consist of written work, video recordings, pictures or anything else, individual exam or group exam, or a project lasting from one day to several days and provides the basis for grading. All or parts of the exam can be stores electronically. Information about the start time and the delivery time can be found on the student service system Studentweb. All aids are permitted, but detailed references to sources must be given (see 18 and 19). Handing in on paper 14. Exam answers are to be delivered to the exam office or posted within the deadline decided. Candidates living more than 100 kilometers from the university can post their answers. Candidates must include a sheet of paper on which their names and student numbers are written. The candidate must have a receipt for an answer sent by post. 15. The answer is to be delivered/sent in 3 copies. The candidate must him/herself ensure that he/she has his/her own copy. The answer is to be submitted with course code, course name and candidate number written down (the name to be written only in special cases). The candidate number is available on Studentweb 14 days before delivery. Electronic delivery using Fronter (Learning Management System) 16. Exam answers and other work must be stored electronically in the area decided upon within the deadline given. Exam answers and other work written in Excel, Powerpoint, Word or similar programmes must include a top text with information as follows: candidate number, course code, course name, number of pages. The file name must include: the course code, the candidate number and the date (For example: Candidate 12-ME118S pdf). 17. The file is to be stored in pdf-format. For students lacking pdf-storage capability on their machines, carry out the following to store in pdf-format anyway: push print, 3
4 choose Adobe pdf, then students can find Adobe pdf. This is available on all PCs. Students put the document in here and then store it according to the directions given. In general about source references and plagiarism 18. In cases of written work sources (Internet, publications, books, personal descriptions etc) are to be given both in the text itself and in the complete literature list. In cases of direct quotation, this is to be clearly marked for example using inset and cursive/italic writing style and this is to be source referencing with specified page referral. Discrepancies from this rule are seen as cheating or attempting to cheat. 19. University of Nordland checks using the plagiarism control system Ephorus delivered written work in relation to plagiarism from for example the Internet, newspaper chronicles, subject articles and previously delivered student work. Plagiarism is seen as cheating, and will in the worst cases lead to the loss of the right to be a student at University of Nordland and other Norwegian higher education institutions as well as the university s partner institutions. 4
