This qualification contains expiring unit standards for which replacement unit standards have now been registered. 3 NZQF NQ Ref 1196 Version 4 Page 3 of 6 National Diploma in Reo Māori (Level 5) Level 5 Credits 140 Purpose The National Diploma in Reo Māori (Level 5) [Ref: 1196] is awarded to people who have demonstrated competence in the knowledge and skills required for achievement in the domains Kōrero, Whakarongo, Tuhituhi and Pānui. It is designed to recognise the skills, knowledge, and competence required for people to use te reo Māori at a high level. The compulsory section recognises the ability to be able to use te reo Māori competently and confidently in the education, business, or public sectors; as well as in community and indigenous settings. Candidates are able to communicate effectively and appropriately with their target audience in te reo Māori. They have an understanding of the structure of formal and colloquial te reo Māori, and are able to embellish their written and oral te reo Māori with idioms and aphorisms. They have the ability to manipulate language and sentence structure, and to use literary devices appropriately. The elective section allows candidates to select from a diverse range of outcomes from field Māori to allow the qualification to be focused on the specific needs of the individual. This qualification builds on the prerequisite National Certificate in Reo Māori (Level 4) [Ref: 0426] and is a prerequisite for the National Diploma in Reo Māori (Level 6) [Ref: 1197]. It provides a basis for further study such as the National Certificate in Reo Māori Media (Introductory Media Skills) [Ref: 1024]; the National Diploma in Reo Māori Media with strands in Journalism, Radio, and Television (Level 5) [Ref: 1146]; the National Certificate in Tourism Māori (Level 4) [Ref: 1077]; and the National Diploma in Tourism Māori (Level 5) [Ref: 1096]. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website: Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard. Changes to structure and content The requirements of the Elective can now be met from any standards at Level 4 or above from field Māori. For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website. There are no transition consequences for existing candidates arising from this revision. Previous versions of the qualification Version 2 was issued following the review of the standards in the Reo Māori subfield. Changes to structure and content included a reduction of credits in the compulsory section and the addition of an elective section, which allowed candidates to choose credits from the Reo Māori subfield, was added to ensure the credit requirements for a diploma were met. Version 1 of this qualification and the National Diploma in Reo Māori (Level 6) [Ref: 1197] replaced the National Diploma in Reo Māori (Level 6) [Ref: 0722]. The replaced qualification expired in December Certification This certificate will display the logos of NZQA and the organisation that has been granted consent to assess against standards that meet the requirements of the qualification (accredited). Classification This qualification is classified according to the classification system listed on the Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS) and the New Zealand Standard Classification of Education (NZSCED) system as specified below. Organisation with consent to assess and Industry Training Organisations assessing against standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Consent to assess requirements and the moderation system are outlined in the associated Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR) for each standard.

It is recommended that unit standards for Kōrero and Whakarongo, and for Tuhituhi and Pānui, are achieved at the preceding level before credit is sought at the next level. This is intended to enhance the development of Reo Māori knowledge and skills.
