2 Overview Aim and objectives of BCS ASSIST What have we achieved in 2010/11? What are our plans for 2011/12? What are the opportunities and challenges facing the Association moving forward? How can you help? 2

3 Aims Provide a network to exchange information and good practices, and to address informatics issues Promote discussion on issues associated with the implementation of national informatics strategies Provide a forum for activities and events at a national and branch level Influence national and local informatics policy Encourage professionalism and raise standards through supporting staff development and educational programme 3

4 Primary Objectives Number Objectives 1 Supporting branches to develop local ASSIST activities and actively engage members. 2 Influencing national policy maintaining recognised role as genuinely independent honest broker and critical friend to Government and its agencies. 3 Developing professionalism amongst members by providing high quality and topical professional development opportunities. 4 Raising the profile of the profession and its input to health and social care services 5 Developing partnerships with learned societies, central NHS bodies, 3 rd party suppliers and other professional bodies to further enhance the association and its support to members 6 Maintaining membership numbers during a time of unprecedented financial challenges 4

5 Supporting Branches Active branch committee and event programme in the North West and Yorkshire and Northern branches Some events during the year in the West Midlands and London and the South East branches Developing Professionals Group actively supporting the Informatics Graduate Trainee Scheme and local Branches 5

6 Influencing National Policy Development of formal response to Information Revolution consultation and contributed to wider BCS submission Formal response to consultation on Liberating the NHS : Outcomes Framework in October 2010 Supporting the development of the national Informatics Skills Development Network Supporting the EHI Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO) campaign 6

7 Developing Professionalism Successful BCS ASSIST stream at HC2011 (over 60 attendees) Autumn conference and AGM Launch of BCS ASSIST mentoring scheme (in conjunction with Sussex HIS) 26 mentors and 10 mentees registered Development of high quality publications - ASSIST Newsletters (3 printed and 3 e-newsletters) Increased use of web pages and social media sites (LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter) to support personal and professional development Developing links with Informatics Leadership development schemes (e.g. North West programme) 7

8 Developing Partnerships Strong engagement with BCS through Member Group liaison and BCS Health committees Excellent working relationships with UKCHIP Developing links with SOCITM Review and refresh of existing commercial partnerships Medical Mosaic, Maracis Solutions, Virgin Media, Dell and Cloud 2 have become partners during the year 8

9 Maintaining Membership Numbers Membership numbers were 1,318 at the end of August particular focus on maintaining Group memberships and following up individuals who were part of a group Mainstreaming of BCS ASSIST membership processes into core BCS operations BCS ASSIST presence at conference stands (HC2011, NHS Confederation, EHI Live and SmartHealthcare) Development of new promotional materials North West Branch commissioned Members Survey recommendations to be put into practice in 2011/12 9

10 Plans for 2011 / 12 Implement outcomes from North West Branch members survey Re-establish brand identity Improve clinician engagement at national and local level Improve membership liaison at branch / local organisation level Refresh of web site and improved content / resources Integration of printed and electronic communication channels Roll-out of BCS ASSIST Roadshows Development of BCS ASSIST Webinar Programme Events and activities for senior informatics leaders Formal support to the NHS Informatics Graduate Training Scheme Support the development of the emerging Informatics Staff Development Network Development of thought pieces on the informatics landscape 10

11 Opportunities and Challenges Times of unprecedented change Back office services (including informatics) under significant scrutiny to identify cost savings Increasing difficulty for staff to find time and funding to support professional and personal development Networking and mutual support becomes increasing important New ways for staff to develop personally and professionally need to be found BCS ASSIST is changing its approach to support its members more fully 11

12 How can you help? Join a local branch committee and get involved in organising events in your area Join the ASSIST Mentoring Scheme as either a mentor or mentee (or both!) Get involved in the planning and delivery of national events and/or our communications to members (newsletter, website etc) Give us your feedback! 12
