3 Global trends and challenges for onshore educational delivery The alignment of ICT education to business needs; ICT curricula needs to be iterative and keep up with the rapid pace of change; Contemporary education needs to be both discipline specific and pertinent to industry requirements Aligning future graduate skills needs to an era of rapid technological change The rationale for the partnering between ACS & UoM The review of Australian Higher Education (Bradley, Noon, Nugent & Scales, 2008, p.179) noted: that one of the key characteristics of an effective tertiary education and training system was clearer and stronger pathways between industry, vocational education and training and Higher Education. 3

4 The Pilot A partnership was formed between: The University of Melbourne (UoM); the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and industry internship providers to develop and embed a two unit elective with supervised industry based learning into the second year of UoM s MIS (worth 25 credit points). Semester 1 The first semester consisted of : Classroom and webinar-based materials delivered by both UoM staff and ACS guest lecturers Professional development sessions carried out at the ACS including CV development and interview skills techniques, The identification of a suitable industry-based project proposal by the student and UoM subject coordinator to be carried out during the internship (semester 2). The assignment of an ACS industry mentor during weeks

5 Semester 2 The second semester consists of: The provision of a 12-week internship, with students working 2 days per week in industry with a company aligned to their particular skill set/career interest Completion the work-based project report Maintenance of reflective journals Continued meetings with ACS mentor The Pilot March students enrolled in the unit April 2014 first ACS event held (100% participation) May Mentors interviewed and matched to mentees June July 2014 Individual internship matching took place/ interviews conducted September 2014 The program was awarded a high commendation in the Victorian International Education Awards for Innovative Industry Partnering 5
