1 Photo: October 2018 IATP SAWS Academy of Fire Science Montour Falls, NY The Instructor Authorization Training Program (IATP) is designed to ensure training consistency and effectiveness in each course discipline offered in the New York State Fire Service Training Program. This forum brings together instructors who participate in the New York State Fire Service Training Program seeking authorization to instruct courses. The Instructor Authorization Training Program is offered three times a year at the New York State Academy of Fire Science and is supplemented by regional course authorization deliveries.

3 Fire Prevention and Control Course Descriptions February 18-22, 2018 Firefighter Training Series This class is designed to give instructors the ability to instruct the core classes required by individuals entering the fire service. Instructors will be required to complete assignments prior to the start of class. Instructors will also be required to successfully complete the Firefighter I National Certification exam. *Newly hired SFIs - PPE/SCBA sizing and pick up is scheduled for Friday evening, 6:30pm - 9:00pm. A sizing form will be sent from the program manager for use at Gear Pick-up. Minimum/Maximum: 10/25 Fire Service Instructor I National Certification Exam The successful completion of this exam will provide the individual with National Certification for Fire Instructor I. Date and Time: 2/17/2019 8:00am - 12:00pm Prerequisites: Fire Service Instructor I course completion a completed National Certification Examination Application. Minimum/Maximum: 1/30 Fire Service Instructor II This is an upper level course designed for the experienced fire service instructor. This course prepares the candidate to meet the Instructor II job performance requirements as defined in NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications, including developing individual lesson plans, scheduling training sessions, budgeting, acquiring resources, developing and analyzing evaluation and feedback instruments, and supervising and coordinating the activities of other instructors. Instructors will also be required to complete assignments prior to and throughout the course. Students may choose to take either a written final exam or the Fire Service Instructor II National Certification exam at the end of the course. Date and Time: 2/17/2019 1:00pm - 2/22/2019 5:00pm Prerequisites: Fire Service Instructor I course completion and Fire Service Instructor I National Certification if planning on taking the Fire Service Instructor II National Certification exam as part of the course with a completed National Certification Examination Application. Minimum/Maximum: 15/22 New SFI Orientation This class reviews the Administrative Policies and Procedures associated with being an employed State Fire Instructor for New York State. All SFIs attending their first IATP are required to attend this orientation. Pre-existing SFIs are welcome to attend this class, regardless of previous IATP attendance, with supervisory approval. 4 General Session This session opens the conference providing information pertinent to the fire service instructor. In addition, the Office of Fire Prevention and Control is proud to announce that Dr. David Griffin will be giving his presentation on the Charleston 9 and how that day set into motion a chain of events that would lead him to see that the way we ve always done it needs to be in the past. He will show that sometimes change can start with just one person. Instructors registering for the FFTS and Fire Service Instructor II automatically be enrolled in this session. Date and Time: 2/18/2019 8:00am - 12:00pm Prerequisites: None Minimum/Maximum: 10/999 How The Rules Have Changed: Firefighters Guide to Lightweight Wood Construction This class is designed to give instructors the ability to instruct the Lightweight Building Construction course. Instructors should have a proficient knowledge of building construction prior to taking this class. Date and Time: 2/18/2019 1:00pm - 2/19/2019 5:00pm Prerequisites: Strong knowledge of building construction & Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 10/24 Courage to Be Safe This class is designed to give instructors the ability to instruct Courage to be Safe. OFPC, in partnership with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, is delivering this educational initiative to accomplish the goal of the US Fire administration to reduce firefighter fatalities by 25 percent within five years and 50 percent within 10 years. The program is based on 16 initiatives developed during the Firefighter Life Safety Summit. Date and Time: 2/18/2019 1:00pm - 5:00pm Prerequisites: None & Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 10/30 Water Rescue Awareness This class is designed to give instructors the ability to instruct the Water Rescue Awareness course which informs students of the hazards associated with water and the ways to protect them serves. Date and Time: 2/18/2019 1:00pm - 5:00pm Prerequisites: None & Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 10/20 Fire Officer 1 (NFPA 1021, 2014 ed.) This class will authorize instructors to instruct the Fire Officer I NFPA 1021, 2014 ed. curriculum including the modular version released in the fall of Students will be required to complete assignments prior to the start of class. 5 Leadership, Accountability, Culture & Knowledge This course examines the root causes of LODDs and the role of Leadership, Accountability, Culture and Knowledge as it influences the end result. Many fire departments across the United States LACK the Right Stuff to prevent them from being on a path to a line of duty death, with Leadership, Accountability, Culture and Knowledge being the elements that need to be addressed and managed in those environments. Through education and training, those departments can improve their survivability by understanding the root causes of firefighter fatalities and tackling these four elements with special emphasis on understanding fire service culture. Date and Time: 2/19/2019 8:00am - 12:00pm Prerequisites: Fire Service Instructor I completion and Fire Officer I completion & Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 10/35 Trench Rescue Awareness This class will authorize instructors to instruct Trench Rescue Awareness which discusses problems that can and do occur in trench rescue incidents. Safety techniques, shoring techniques, proper procedures, team operations, and hazard assessment will be discussed and explained in depth. Date and Time: 2/19/2019 8:00am - 12:00pm Prerequisites: Rescue Technician Basic instructor authorization and Trench Rescue Awareness course completion Completion/Authorization: Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 10/20 Tactical Fireground Simulations This authorization allows the instructor to utilize current technology allowing students to apply previous training on fireground operations, strategy and tactics using various practical scenarios brought to life in a digitally simulated environment. Exemptions from these prerequisites may be made by the program manager for special situations. & Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 10/20 Blended Learning 101 This informational session is designed to enhance the participant s ability to navigate the Resource One on-line course environment and better support their enrolled students by using more of the tools available on the website while creating an engaging cyber classroom experience. Personal laptop computers are encouraged as there will be a limited number of computers available in the computer lab for use during the session. 6 Principles of Instruction This class authorizes the instructor to teach this introductory instructor course to trainers at the company level who need the appropriate skills in the field of instruction. Date and Time: 2/20/2019 1:00pm - 2/21/ :00pm Prerequisites: Fire Service Instructor I National Certification and 5 years experience as a fire service instructor or Fire Instructor II NYS Certification and 5 years experience as a fire service instructor Completion/Authorization: Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 7/21 Public Safety Wellness, Fitness & Rehab Awareness This course outlines, through lecture and discussion, the problems that are creating the need for on scene rehab, why these instances are occurring, and the challenges in developing a rehab program. Students will be given statistics on how firefighters and EMS personnel are dying and the standards associated with on scene rehab as well as the incentives available for creating a safety and wellness program for the department. Date and Time: 2/20/2019 8:00am - 12:00pm Prerequisites: None & Authorization Minimum/Maximum: 10/30 Submitting for Reimbursement: Navigating the Statewide Financial System (SFS) This course teaches SFIs how to use the Statewide Financial System (SFS) to request reimbursement for mileage, tolls, hotel stays, car rentals, and any other reimbursable expenses. Students will need to bring their user ID and password to class with them. If they do not know this information, or do not have access to SFS, they should contact their supervising FPS or Sandy Maxon well in advance of the start of class. SFIs attending their first IATP will automatically be enrolled in this class.
