1 Course Syllabus: CompTIA Network+ Instructor: Roger Elliott Phone: Office: (740) Cell (740) Courseware Course #: Hours: TestOut Network Pro 4.1 CompTIA Network+ NT8500D 85 hours (80 classroom, 5 testing) Meeting Days & Times: Mondays and Wednesdays 5:30pm 9:30pm Location Room 1009A or 1007 Course Prerequisites WorkKeys pretesting High School Diploma or GED NT8004 A+ OR with permission from Program Coordinator Course Materials Notebook and pen for note taking Desktop Computer with Microsoft OS Personal Laptop (optional) Course Description This course is intended for entry-level computer support professionals with a basic knowledge of computer hardware, software, and operating systems who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of networking concepts and acquire the required skills to prepare for a career in network support or administration. This course will provide the knowledge and skills required to troubleshoot, configure, and manage common network wireless and wired devices, establish basic network design and connectivity, understand and maintain network documentation, identify network limitations and weaknesses, and implement network security, standards, and protocols. The candidate will have a basic understanding of emerging technologies including unified communications, mobile, cloud, and virtualization technologies. The course is designed to help you prepare for the CompTIA Network+ (N10-006) Certification Exam and the CompTIA Mobility+ (MBO-001) Certification Exam

2 Course Objectives The course objectives include: Preparing students for post-program success, both in the work force and in their educational pursuits. Preparing students to process information using higher order thinking skills and to engage in sound decision-making. Providing a rich learning environment utilizing research-based methods of instruction, state-of-the-art technology, and current resources and materials. Maintaining high expectations for all students regardless of educational needs and providing support necessary for achievement. Providing a challenging, worthwhile curriculum based on current industry/academic expectations. Specifically and upon successful completion of the course CompTIA Network+ Certification, the students will be able to: o Demonstrate an understanding of networking terminology, network categories, standard network models, physical network topologies, logical network topologies o Understand data transmission methods, media access methods, and signaling methods o Demonstrate basic proficiency with bounded and unbounded network media, noise, control, and various network connectivity devices o Demonstrate an understanding of Ethernet and wireless networks o Demonstrate an understanding of OSI and TCP/IP models o Understand the TCP/IP Protocol Suite, IP addressing, default IP addressing schemes, creating custom IP addressing schemes, the implementation of IPv6 addresses, and delivery techniques o Demonstrate proficiency with switching, static IP routing, dynamic IP routing, virtual LANs, Plan a SOHO Network o Understand WAN Transmission Technologies, WAN Connectivity Methods, and voice over data transmission o Understand remote network architectures, remote access networking implementations, virtual private networking, and VPN protocols o Understand computer security basics, system security tools, authentication methods, and encryption methods 2

3 Grading Evaluation of student performance is based upon pupil performance objectives relating to course competencies study. The number of competencies mastered and the degree of mastery is translated into appropriate grades consistent with the C-TEC Board of Education policy on grading guidelines, practices, and procedures. In the process of evaluation, instructors obtain several grades for each student within the time frame of the program/course. These grades may include, but are not limited to, performance on tests, quizzes, homework, assignments, special research projects, classroom participation, lab competency mastery and/or improvement and the demonstration of positive employability traits. Projects This course will use hardware, software, and library projects which are designed to give you an opportunity to apply what you are learning and to research particular aspects of networks and networking more deeply than class time alone would allow. Students passing the CompTIA Network+ Certification Exam within 1 week of the course ending date will receive a grade of 100% on the final exam. Participation/Attendance It is expected each student to participate in class discussion and to engage your fellow students along with the instructor in the activity of learning. Among other things this means that each student will have completed any reading, exercises, projects, etc. that are due. Additional means of measurement is the component of taking attendance at the start of class. Assignments will be turned-in at the start of class on the day they are due. Any assignment (exercise or project) will be accepted for partial credit for up to one week after the due date. They will be marked down according to how late they are. One week or more after the due date for any particular assignment it will not be accepted any longer for credit. The breakdown for how your grade will be determined is as follows: Quizzes 15% Homework Assignments 20% Labs 20% Professionalism 25% Final Exam/Certification 20% Students must maintain a 70% GPA. Final grades will be assigned based upon the student's accumulated points. Letter grades will be assigned using the following scale: 3

4 Grading Scale % - A 80-89% - B 70-79% - C 60-69% - D 59% or below F Credentialing The CompTIA Network+ (Exam N10-006) Course Policies Disruptive Behavior Disruptive behavior of any type is NOT permitted and may result in dismissal from the program. Sleeping during class, tardiness to class, excessive talking during class, use of cell phones in class, inappropriate Internet usage, and disrespectful behavior are examples of disruptive behavior. Plagiarism Submitting plagiarized work for an academic requirement is considered academic misconduct. Plagiarism is the representation of another s work or ideas as one s own; it includes the unacknowledged word-for-word use and/or paraphrasing of another person s work, and/or inappropriate unacknowledged use of another person s ideas. Diversity - It is the responsibility of the instructor and the students to foster and maintain a harmonious, non-threatening and non-discriminating environment in the classroom. Therefore, all individuals are to be respected as equal and contributing partners of our society. Attendance: Must maintain at least 90% rate of attendance. You are required to attend all classes. However, you may miss up to 2 classes and still pass the course. Any other absences must be approved by the program supervisor. 4

5 CompTIA Network+: Course Sequence Module 0 Introduction This module introduces the course, prerequisites and required skills for the exam. Students will also learn how to use the hardware simulator so they can complete the simulations as they proceed through the course. Module 1 Networking Basics This module lays the foundation of the basics of networking. This includes information on networking terminology, common physical and logical topologies, networking architectures and protocols, network connections, and the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. Module 2 Cables and Connectors This module examines common cables and connectors used in networks. Twisted pair, coaxial and fiber optic cabling are discussed. Students will become familiar with the standards, specifications, and components used for wiring implementation. Module 3 Networking Devices In this module students will learn about using network adapters and devices to connect to a network. They will also learn about internetworking devices (routers, firewalls, and layer3 switches). Module 4 Ethernet This module teaches the students the basics of working with Ethernet architecture, specifications, and details about connecting network devices. Module 5 Network Implementation This module discusses aspects of a network implementation. This includes understanding IP addressing, assigning IP addresses, mapping logical host names to IP addresses, routing, and accessing the Internet. Students will learn why IPv6 is necessary and how multicasting works. They will also learn the basics of using Voice over IP (VoIP). Module 6 Wireless Networking This module examines using a radio frequency wireless network to connect to hosts. Students will learn the basics of networking architecture, infrastructure, and wireless standards (802.11, Infrared, and Bluetooth). They will learn how to implement security on a wireless network, configure a wireless network, and identify factors that can effect a wireless connection. Module 7 Wide Area Networks (WANs) In this module students will learn facts about Wide Area Networks (WAN) technologies, structure, and services. They will learn methods to connect to the Internet through an ISP and how to create a remote access connection. 5

6 Module 8 Network Security This module teaches the students how to secure the network from various network threats. Students will learn how to use a firewall, a Virtual Private Network (VPN), and switch features to enhance security. They will also learn about the elements that can be used to provide authentication and encryption for the network. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and network monitoring tools are used to help prevent attacks. Module 9 Network Management This module examines components of network management. This includes configuration management documentation, SNMP, remote management, network monitoring tools, and elements to optimize the performance of the network. Module 10 Troubleshooting In this module students will learn a systematic methodology for troubleshooting, tools to troubleshoot network connectivity problems, and commands to gather network information and troubleshoot IP configuration problems. They will also learn how to troubleshoot name resolution, switching and routing problems. Practice Exams In Practice Exams students will have the opportunity to test themselves and verify that they understand the concepts and are ready to take the certification exams for both Network Pro and Network+ certifications. 6
