7 SAS and OSU Data Mining Certificate Intended for full-time masters students with technical degrees at OSU Students come from MS in MIS (65%), MS in Industrial Engineering (25%), MS in Statistics (5%) and others (5%) About 250 graduates currently work in various US corporations as data analyst, marketing analyst, SAS programmers, business analysts, data miners, data scientists and so on. Our major employers include companies in various industries such as financial and insurance, hospitality and entertainment, consulting, manufacturing, retail, healthcare and others. Most of our students are employed outside of Oklahoma

8 Graduate Certificate in Business Data Mining Intended for working professionals who do not want to pursue a masters degree yet want to learn data mining skills using SAS tools by taking all classes via online delivery. Preferably with technical background Often they continue to work with their current employers but with an upward or a lateral move in their career paths. 8

10 Typical Credentials (Certifications) Earned by our Students Beyond completing courses, our students are strongly encouraged to earn following certifications: Base SAS Programming Certification Almost all of our students in data mining certificates earn this credential Predictive Modeling Certification Exam Almost all of our students in data mining certificates earn this credential Advanced SAS Programming Certification Some (about 50%) of our students in data mining certificates earn this credential

11 Other Requirements to Earn certificates Real-world Business Project All non distance-learning students must complete at least one real business project with large and messy data and ambiguous problem definition Typically student groups of 4-5 work on a project in the Spring semester Typical projects involves predictive modeling or text mining applications Data Mining shootout It is mandatory for all students in the advanced data mining class to participate in the analytics shootout in groups Research posters All students are encouraged to write at least one research poster/paper for presentation at regional or national conferences 11

14 Where Are We Headed? The United States alone faces a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep technical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts to analyze big data and make decisions based on their findings. McKinsey Global Institute study ( n/big_data_the_next_frontier_for_innovation) Our current program is targeted for the first group (those with deep technical skills) We are starting a new certificate program to target the second group (managers and analysts) in partnership with SAS 14

15 Two Certificates: Basic Differences SAS and OSU Data Mining Goal: To provide deep technical and substantial programming skills for manipulating and analyzing large data sets. Typical Student: Masters student with technical degrees (MIS, Engineering, Statistics, Comp. Sci.). Career: Entry-level data scientist, data analyst, data miner, SAS programmer, SAS analyst, SAS forecaster, SAS consultant, SAS Administrator SAS and OSU Marketing Analytics Goal: To provide analytical (not programming) skills for solving business problems using any available data. Typical Student: MBA student with little technical training but with some work experience. Career: Entry-level business analysts, web analysts, marketing analysts (for MBAs with little experience) or mid-level managers or consultants or analysts (for MBAs with some work experience).

16 Status of New Certificates Two certificates (MBA with Marketing Analytics Option and Graduate Certificate with Marketing Analytics) have been proposed in January Both were approved by Spears School of Business Committees in February 2013 and forwarded to OSU s graduate college. Both were approved by OSU s Graduate Council in April 2013 Next stops and approval needed are: Instructional Council (Associate Deans from each college) Provost s office State Regents Hoping to get all of the approvals by end of Fall
